So, what do you think, Lodestoners?
Keep the coin in case they add something later on that'll make me regret selling it...
or is selling it to get your 25k back the entire point?
(Hmmm.)

Have fun with your shiny coin. I'll be using my new officer's lance!
How do you get it? : ) Also keep it it's neat.
When you accumulate 25,000 GC seals, inquire about promotion and buy the medal, then accept the new quest, go out and kill the NM, and come back. Talk to and salute the guy and he'll give you the coin and Second Lieutenant.
I just can't figure out if it's one of those situations where the entire purpose of this item is the potential to get seals from it and thus keeping it around would be a pointless, sentimental gesture... or if there might be some use for it down the line.
where do i go to turn it in?
I will personally be waiting. Considering the events that will be happening before 2.0, this coin has potential to be worth more at that time. Then again, it may still be worth the same.
Can someone tell me where the heck to turn in this coin? @_@
Black Market NPC. One in uldah looks like Quickfingers next to the first stands on market strip.
I'm Twin Adder >.< I never knew where the blackmarket NPC was
They lurk around the corners, usually near the NPC market stalls.
Found the one in uldah and I traded it in there. Looks like you can use any of them.
I love how shady they are. Especially the one in Uldah. reminded me of buying of cocaine :>
I'll be keeping my coin for now.
100k for a crafting II scroll is a little to pricey for me. Hope his prices goes down in the future.
Questions, questions indeed...
I turned mine in. It's unique/untradable with no way of getting this coin other than this quest, if there was something else to use it on I sincerely doubt they'd omit it until later without adding in another way to get the coin in case you did turn it in. Turning in a seemingly useless u/u inventory -1 item for 25k seals seems like the entire point of the item.
Ya but that's the thing, they could have just made the quest reward 30k and you have to keep in mind those Qirin are con artist so anyone who gave away their coin now most likely got ripped off by them. It would be amusing if they add a another use for these coins and the qirin sell it to those who alrdy sold it for 10mil gil lol.
Regardless of how important that coin may be to you.. Gath's 1 gil is still worth more than yours....
Or maybe it could be exchanged for 50k seals in 2.0, where GC Captain weapons require 49,999 Seals to purchase.
The only reason I'm led to believe this coin will be worth more is the description: "A gold coin minted by the three Grand Companies of Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, and Ul'dah to commemorate the reforming of the Eorzean Alliance. Guaranteed never to depreciate in value!"
If it's true that the events we're experiencing now will not be in 2.0, then it's likely this coin will not be obtainable either. Therefore I think the Qiqirn (or another npc) may pay more for it at that time.
its just to force us getting some seals and buy gc item >.>
Depreciate in value. Doesn't say anything about it gaining value. Suffice it to say, SE would be shooting themselves in the foot by adding something that is only obtainable once and not telling people it would have future use. I'm fairly certain this coin is simply a means of recovering from the massive seal hit one takes while ranking up to officer. It's just a little flavor detail. You give it to a Qiqirin, and lore-wise they have an obsession with shiny things.
It's just 25k seals, and I'd be willing to bet those 25k seals that it isn't going to be for anything else in the future.
None. There is absolutely zero harm. Never said to go cash your coin in, just that I'm fairly certain it's only going to ever be for a 25,000 seal stipend. If you want an item now, I'd say cash it. If not, you can just hang onto it to help with future rank ups.
Max out your seals, spend them on new ranks, and fill your pool back up with a quick 25k.
What is odd:
Why use this coin as a mechanism for giving you back 25,000 seals for completing the quest, as opposed to simply giving you 25,000 seals extra as the reward.
Possible explanation:
You have 45,000 seals, and apply for promotion, thus giving 25,000 seals leaving you with: 20,000
You then complete the quest, giving you 5,000 seal reward + 25,000 seal reward (in lieu of coin) = 30,000 seal reward.
This, plus the original 20,000 you had left would immediately put you at the 50,000 seal cap.
If, however, in between applying for promotion and completing quest (it may take some a while), you earn seals then you will run into the problem:
20,000 seals left after applying.
5,000 seals earned from doing caravans with friends, maybe a side quest or two.
25,000 seals before finishing quest + 5,000 seal reward + 25,000 seal reward = 55,000 seals, putting you over the 50k cap.
Having the 25,000 seal reward as a 'coin' that is redeemable would ensure you could get those 25,000 seals when you have 'room' to store 25,000 seals (i.e., when you are at 25,000 or less, as opposed to 30,000 and thus loose out on 5000 seals).
Therefore I think the logic is this:
25,000 seals is not the 'cost' for promotion, but simply a requirement to have for promotion. It is 'met' by being withdrawn from you.
Upon completion, the 25,000 seals are 'returned' to you.
In order to ensure that you do not exceed the 50k cap, it is returned to you in 'coin' form.
A side perk: Those who like to collect things can collect this one-in-a-kind once-in-a-lifetime item, and treasure it for years to come as a pretty shiny thing.
Another side perk: If you re-reach cap at 50k seals, and have coin, you in essence have 75k seals on hand. So if next month the grand company sells a bunch of items you HAVE to have right away that cost a total of 75k, you are set!
I'm pretty much sure this is all its good for, and it's original intent.
I'm guessing that the "guaranteed never to depreciate in value!" line is a joke poking fun at the type of commemorative coin/plate/etc. commercials you see on TV. It's possible that the coin might have some use in the future, but I don't think the item description holds any kind of clue.
What Asiaine said makes the most sense, IMO. It also explains the sudden increase in promotion price, last rank cost was 5k.
Im thinking the 25k was because it is an important rank up moving up to officer from enlisted, Im thinking that moving up to Lieutenant 1st class wont be as many seals and the next big rank up will probably be Captain, then Major, then Colonel x 2, and lastly General x 5. Based off US Army ranks which closely resemble Imperial Japanese Army ranks
I will keep my coin. I'm a collector of these things. No other reason. So people can deal with it.
I'll hold onto the coin since it is likely to be a one time thing. 25k seals is nothing.
I find it funny that everyone is NPC'n them when if you remember when Jobs first came out people were NPC'n Keepers Hymn's because they didn't know what they were for. I'll keep my coin, worst off I'm chewing up one inv slot, gonna rofl when coin is for something big in 1.23/2.0
A lot of people threw out Beastmen coins because they had no use except a decent amount of gil to NPC...just sayin.
You must be from the future then if you know for a fact that the coin is useless. They gave us the hymn then a dev said it was for a future patch, now they give us the coin, just gonna wait for a dev to say something before trading it for seals I can get in a day.
