Yes you can go up the highest mountain and run in circles :/ that place is the easiest to xp farm

Just doing the quests and crafting the necessary items you unlock gets you to about Rank 4 without any effort. After that you start to need some effort, so capture 20 animals and plant all of the seeds that you can. Gather from the animals daily and gather the plants every few days. Don't need to water them because it rains.
Gathering them gives you a big chunk of experience if you didn't make the mammets do them. Building new buildings gives lots of experience as well, so build on any plots that you unlock and gather the necessary materials to do it.
You can eventually setup a workshop and make it create some items using materials you have a lot of. Although there are optimal choices, it doesn't matter that much and if you just set whatever you find, it will give you experience each day you talk to the workshop person. You need to set rest days for it and there is a button on the tool menu to see if you don't have enough materials for everything the workshop is making.
The workshop is what makes you cowries, and most of these rewards cost cowries.
There is no way to "quickly" rank up, you are timegated by timers that you can't speed up in any way.
Your only option besides waiting is to grind exp by gathering on the island but even that takes a long time during which you'll be mindlessly running in circles clicking on gathering nodes.
You do need certain items/buildings made to unlock new stuff so make sure your making all your new crafts.
The quickest way to LVL would be to set up your workshop at all times and grind materials that you can make traps out of. The crafting of the traps (or food recipes for animals) also give bonus exp.

Follow the leveling guide.
Not the answer you wanted but just go at the pace designed as otherwise it'll be really rough ride. Adding to that build all the buildings, all the upgrades, and use all the garden plots (xp per node harvested), pasture slots (xp per animal gathered), granary missions, quests, and workshop slots - all these will give you really solid amounts of exp.
Grinding nodes being the most painful way to grind out levels, it works but would be like 2.0 FATE leveling / original atma farm. The way they intended you to progress is essentially the best way to level without losing your mind.
Save some cowries for unlock quests rather than buying goodies right away. If you want the limsa lighthouse right away on rank unlock then also be sure to get 3 silver from granary quests prior to its unlock. (I would check the upgrades and landmark resources prior to needing to build them so you can be ready at unlock).
Crafting gives large amounts of EXP.
Gather from your animals daily and keep growing vegetables. Upgrade the paddock and vegetable patch when available and catch more animals so you get more EXP from gathering from them.
Always have your granaries collecting materials. The expedition cost is neutral as the rare materials brought back can be sold for the cost of the expedition (if you were short on currency, which you shouldn't be) and you'll still be getting lots of other building materials in the meanwhile.
Make sure to interact with the signboards for built/upgraded buildings as you don't get the EXP until you do.
I never bothered to unlock it cause it never interest me but it seems the largest gains go from:
1. Complete visions
2. Build one of every building
3. Keep workshops running

@Squawkbox @Crime Time Hey everyone! The following message only applies to players who are rank 12 on their island already. As we're approaching the release of 6.4, since the Experiment last patch was such a success, we're officially endorsing the Explosion for 6.4. What this means is that we'll be recommending max rank players give two weeks of sub-optimal workshop schedules to the mammets on 05/10/2023 (Cycle 2, Season 38) and then not talk to the mammets to claim your cowries and experience until 6.4 drops on 05/23/2023 (probably). After the patch, you can talk to the Tactful Taskmaster to get a giant EXP bomb that will help accelerate your island progress!
For the pasture, don’t bother waiting for rare spawns: fill it asap with common animals to get the xp from collecting leavings and to get mats. You can look for rare spawns at your leisure and replace the previous animals if you want to. Choose varied animals to get different types of mats for the workshops.
Get the workshops and granaries up and running as soon as they become available: ypu get lots of cp for building/upgrading them and then using them. Do not spend cowries before level 10. After level 10, you can level up your Island somewhat passively with the pasture, gardening and workshops (just don’t automate things while you need xp).
For the workshop, you will likely not have all the rare mats needed to craft the lvl 6-9 recommendations from Overseas Casuals depending on how dast you level up. I unlocked my Island on an alt about 10 days ago and am now at level 10: those rare mats from the granaries were not coming fast enough for me to craft the sub level 10 recommendations. Try alternating crafts of the same type that are in high demand and low supply (you will find calculation details in Overseas casuals) until you have enough mats. Btw you will need 3 garnets for each level 3 workshop, 3 spruce logs for each granary so don’t spend them all on crafting. Prioritize levelling your buildings.
For the most part, just do your quests and keep your workshops humming. There is no reason to hurry - seriously. Players that have been doing their Island since release probably have nearly 700k cowries. When you realize that you only need 180-ish to get everything currently available and players are sitting on upwards of 4 times that amount... it isn't like a player just starting their island is 9 months behind everyone else (as far as rewards go).
When the island rank was increased to 12, I just did my weekly stuff in the workshop to get experience. I got to 12 with minimal effort and just like the players that grinded to get to 12 on day 1... I still have nearly 700,000 cowries just gathering dust. What's the point in rushing?
