So can we talk about the screen issue here?

There's a whole other thread to talk about cheating, but I just wanted to talk about the whole issue with things on your screen sometimes being way too small.

More than that I also wanted to point out something else. Screen size affects a lot of game play that involves the outer edges of the arenas and even mechanics that are displayed higher up in the air.

I have a really big monitor but I don't particularly like playing in full screen either. Is there any chance we could get all of this scaled better?

Agree with you. The cheating is just a symptom of an underlying issue. The bosses keep getting bigger, their hitboxes are gigantic. More and more stuff is happening at the same time.
Meanwhile, I'm having trouble fitting everything on my screen comfortably, even when fully zoomed out.

The funny thing is…if you use an Ultra Wide monitor (21:9) you have a larger portion of the game on screen than using a 16:9.
So…21:9 monitors are cheating tools?

I play on an Ultrawide monitor [21:9]. It does give me an advantage over people who play on a normal aspect ratio [16:9]. I can see mechanics from the side a lot easier without needing to rotate my screen a lot. It also gives me enough space to fit everything on my screen while still being able to see the arena.

Technically yes however I would find it very silly to ban people over having a wide monitor.

It's been a known annoyance since Leviathan Extreme and it's never been officially acknowledged. Don't hold your breath.

You can also put your monitors up in sourround... so you get like with a 2560x1440 if you have 3 and bind them together to get 7680x1440

Ah, yes, the challenge of accumulating enough disposable income to buy an ultrawide or triple-monitor setup and the hardware to drive it.

Really cool that Mr. Yoshida and crew are creating this exciting crossover event with Real Life.

Honestly the FoV for FFXIV is sometimes problematic for me because some bosses mechanics I've found I've actually misses since I can't actually scale out far enough to see the entire thing. I play on an Ultrawide too and usually the problem for me is the Vertical View is very restrictive to the point I cannot see some boss mechanics as they're out of my FoV. Gotten hit myself by avoidable mechanics as I just don't see them at all over this. Despite the whole drama over the Zoomer's it does point out a problem I've noticed for a while, the other that has been pointed out in this whole raid drama is the fact Omega actually deploys enough debuffs to trigger the 30 buff limit currently on the game, an issue that has been highlighted by those doing Delirium and even Eureka. If Yoshi want's to prevent a repeat it probably would be a good idea to maybe either add an option to raise the Vertical Positioning of the PC to be either higher or allow a larger FoV in the game to give better views expecially since some bosses are quite large.

so the 2 in the middle are typically what players on console and probably a majority of PC players see depending on the specific model of monitor or TV. That top one reminds me of old oversided tubed monitors and TV's from before HD came around... I'd think no one would still be using those for anything other than retro gaming lol.

Then they need to restrict all players to the same screen aspect ratio if how much can be seen is considered an important part of the challenge.

Or, they could improve the zoom feature in game so those who don't own the ultra-wides have access to the same field of vision as those who do.

If they don't want something to be seen to make an encounter more challenging, they have the option to make it invisible. They do control what we get to see in a fight. If it is visible, then it is meant to be seen and having a faulty zoom that prevents players from seeing what has been made visible is a problem.

Monitor is not a third-party program but computer hardware so it's not cheating or using an SSD would be cheating. What about if your using 3 or more monitors when you're playing that's even a larger portion of the game on the screen.

I think I heard about some people playing in windowed mode and then adjusting the game window so they could use a 16:9 ratio in game and get the benefits of widescreen without having one. Not 100% sure on it though as I have never bothered testing it out.

You can set the game to windowed mode and set your own 0x0 settings to extend your display to mimic a widescreen.

You end up losing a bit of vertical space, but if the issue is that you cant see the sides, there are non-hardware ways to fix that.

I would really like the ability to zoom out more. It is hard to see some relevant mechanics involving tall bosses, like Famfrit's ewer and E8 Shiva's gaze attack icon.

It's pointing out the ridiculousness of clutching your pearls in moral panic if someone finds a solution using software, but saying, "Oh well that's fine" if they accomplish the exact same end result using hardware.

In other words: the panic isn't about people having relative advantages. It's about defining and controlling what advantages people are allowed to have. I'm guessing because most people feel "morally justified" buying new hardware ("It cost money! And FFXIV would disable it if it wasn't okay!"), but afraid of installing software modifications ("GitHub is hard! And Yoshida-senpai will put me in the peepee corner!").

So basically. You're hiding behind morality ("No one must CHEAT in my SACRED FINAL FANTASY FOURTEEN!"), but not actually crusading against inequalities ("Oh expensive hardware is fine, connection differences are fine"), just picking and choosing the inequalities that you approve of.

"Hack" → "Haha, this word is bad, I am Batman, I will stop these evildoers!"

"Expensive third party hardware or extra connection fees" → "Haha, I am Elon Musk, look at my technological brainpower for buying this!"

So it's exhausting.

Do you approve of relative advantages, or not? Does everything need to be completely-equal, or not?

Should FFXIV be limited to only 2-button mouse and basic DELL keyboard? Should the viewing-area be hard-locked, like competitive RTS games? Should everyone be given the same artificial 250ms simulated latency? Should HUD customization be removed?! (A good HUD layout makes information significantly-easier to notice and process, after all)


If the real argument is just, "Rules are rules, no matter how arbitrary or strange in practice, and breaking any rule is cheating", that's... not inherently "wrong", just very stubborn.

However, it's also a very different argument than faux-concerns such as, "Oh, but think of the poor orphan PS5 players!" and "This is so unfair! It's such an advantage!".

Because if those were really the fundamental concerns, a lot more 3rd-party solutions would be hot-button topics — like latency differences (which PS5 players also struggle to solve), view-area differences (a lot easier to do triple-monitor on PC), MMO mice, or... that HORI Tactical Assault Controller that Yoshida used to advertise and talk glowingly about how much easier it made controlling his character and rotation?

(I mean right? Mr. Yoshida, if you want an authentic experience, you should ONLY be using a traditional keyboard and a 2-button mouse, right? After all, other True Gamers™ have managed to clear with such simple control hardware, as the game was tested and designed.)


So yeah, the fact that multimonitor / ultrawide setups provide significant increases in situational awareness during battle content really is comparable to "hacking the game". You're achieving the same end result: a distinct relative advantage against other players.

And that's what everyone's so upset about, right? It doesn't matter how big or small the advantage is, it's just not acceptable to have those differences?

You can adjust your window size in windowed mode to allow you to set widescreen resolutions if it matters that much to you, granted I would hold off on it if I were using a 1080p monitor as it would start to get really small.
