The housing system is trash!

What I have to say has probably been said before in different ways. Nevertheless I shall add my voice to the chorus and make the message louder until something is done.

First, let me be clear, I have no complaints about the rest of the game. It works pretty well as I was playing through it and farming up the gil to buy a house.

But the housing system itself is still trash, still utter garbage.

Getting a home, decorating it nice and using it to have people over and host RP is the only end game content I truly care about. But when I finally get there I find it's only a *chance* to buy one, once every few days.

I ran roulettes to earn gil in anticipation of the new wards opening up in 6.3, bid on a medium house, waited, and lost.

During this process I have experienced a variety of negative emotions. Anxiety, nervousness, animosity, jealousy, resentment, disappointment, and frustration. Those are not fun emotions.

This is not fun, so why am I paying monthly for this? My inability to just earn the gil and buy a house outright is killing my motivation and draining all the fun out of the game for me.

I do not understand why there aren't 100 wards or more already. But in my opinion, the *ONLY* way to fix the housing system is to remove the ridiculous artificial scarcity. Simply allow all wards to be open to any buyer and as wards fill up, dynamically spawn more wards and remove / consolidate them if they are becoming empty.

I don't know why this hasn't been done already, probably some nonsense about old coding they can't chance and server space and blah blah blah. They are super popular now, they have the money to do it, there is no excuse. LOTRO did it that way and that's an older game. You could buy a house and if a ward was getting full, more would appear. If they could do it, then FFXIV sure as heck should be able to.

It should not take a major content patch to release a paltry 6 wards or whatever. The game should spawn more wards as they fill up and I can just go to the plot I want and buy the house instantly, no waiting, no competing against other bid, and until that happens the housing system will remain broken trash.

There is 9 that never got bidded on the ward I am in now.

I just counted 100+ houses in Goblet that is up for lottery on Lamia.

Plenty of houses to go around.

As for the system... it is 1000 times better than what it was before and also if you always try and go for popular ones like large or medium... you will most likely lose, get a small one to begin with... you can then attempt to move up the tier when lotteries get available.

Putting your bet on a safe horse is always the best start else you may end standing empty handed for months, if 10 people bid on a house it is 10% chance to win it... 20 people 5% 100 people 1%

For a cottage.... 50-100% chance to win currently, depending on the spot of course.

I think this thread is just to complain for the reason to complain instead of trying to make your own game running.

This was your mistake. Mediums and Larges will always be heavily contested by FC's and Players due to how few there are. Now imagine trying since 2.4 for ANY small and never succeeding. That is where I and two of my friends are still to this day.

The real issues with supply that could be fixed are:

1. Make FC only wards only apply to Meds and Larges. Balmung and Mateus both have DOZENS of Smalls in FC only wards sitting there collecting dust. They will never be used until the servers allow new characters again, which leads to....
2. Prevent multi account buyers of housing for submarine farms. Honestly just straight up remove all money from submarines or move them out of housing to the Grand company halls so we don't have incidents like what is happening in the other thread.
3. Remove the grandfathering of multi house owners and take their houses. This is a real problem on your server in particular as TWO people own two entire wards of the goblet.
4. Give priority on first time buyers over relocators for smalls. One major issue is that once someone gets a house, they aren't really ever removed from the pool of buyers as a whole. I have witnessed someone win a small house in the goblet, then when a plot that had a better view/access was free, they bid on it and won, preventing tons of first time buyers from getting a house.

Or you know, bite the bullet for the tech upgrade to add enough wards to eliminate supply problems/ add instanced housing. The issue with these however is the Game engine itself has some very...difficult restrictions. It's why things like Larges having a pathetically small item limit exist in the first place.

My understanding is the company is still affected by the global chip semiconductor shortage, hence why the tech limitation.

Stop saying "Plenty of houses to go around" when you are playing on some obscure low pop server. The vast majority of NA plots will be gone in one cycle from now. If you didn't get one during this cycle, you're probably not going to get a house for years unless they add new wards again suddenly.

And people don't even really want smalls. The demand for medium and large is so much greater than availability. It would be really helpful to have a new system that focuses only on making larger plots available in much higher numbers somewhere.

No offense, but doesn't sound like you are really into housing. Have you even decorated an apartment? You haven't even gone for a small at all by the sounds of it. Looking at your character stats, you would spend 16-20m + on a medium and not be able to buy any furniture, nor craft it since you stated you saved up gil via doing roulettes. (must have taken a long time).

I have a friend who has spent a year trying to get a medium and finally got one last cycle. Best decorator i know and well deserved because the house she made is stunning. Can you say the same? You'd get a medium house when you aren't even interested in decorating at all...

In SE's defence, more servers are required for more wards. The housing wards are up 100% of the time whilst the housing instances itself aren't. The instances are shared with the Island also. More wards means more servers for the wards which means more running costs too. Yeah it sucks, but when auto demolition takes effect in a month or less, there should be a constant cycle of houses from players who bought a house and never really cared about it in the first place. Hell, the amount of houses around wards that don't even have the outside decorated.

Smalls are charming. Oddly enough all the smalls are sold in wards as well as the medium and large. If all you want is a medium or large good luck that ain't going to happen soon unless you decide to transfer to one of the new worlds and even there competition will be a thing.

They aren't going to redesign wards the best hope for more medium and large is the implementation of instant housing which probably isn't going to happen either although we could be surprised one day.

There was no need to make so many FCs wards.

Honestly there are plenty of houses - even on busy servers.

There are a "few" exceptions like Balmung.
Its because people will not settle for a small; they want medium or bust and so they act like they cannot get something that is going to take a long time to achieve in general.

That said now that shell FC's are a common practice SE is going to have to do something about that before long. Because now that "FC's" are competing for private homes it means that the odds of getting a private estate you want are dropping significantly due to you competing with peoples alts.

Until the issue of shell FCs which are taking property and thus violating the ToS; they really should drastically reduce the wards that "FCs" can bid in. I would love to see the data SE has on how many 1 account FC's are bidding on houses as it now seems to be common practice.

The scarcity is the only thing that makes housing appealing. If you remove the scarcity, nobody would bother. It would be dead on arrival. The furniture market would die too since everyone would have a home instead of new owners cycling through.

The scarcity is what makes it appealing to you. You don't get to make that claim on behalf of others.

I absolutely would bother without the scarcity because I enjoy housing.

The furmiture market dies when no one is able to get a house because of the scarcity. If there is always an influx of new owners, there is always more gil to be made. In addition, the more owners there are the more that will want to redecorate on occasion, creating more demand for furnishings.

Speak for yourself man, people have been wanting houses for YEARS now! The demand will always been there.

Hell if anything removing the scarcity and implementing instanced housing would allow the furniture market to grow even more since you'd have a constant flow of people buying houses every week/month. Like Jojoya said the market dies 2 months in when all the plots are taken up and everyone has either-

Quick ventures also help kill the market. The amount of items that have no crafters on them because they came from quick ventures break the supply/demand on the market. With auto demolition at least, there will be a constant supply of houses now every week rather than the odd few that were given up willingly.

The biggest problem with a lottery system in the posts that I've seen is kind of a survivor's bias. Those who win (or aren't invested in getting a house) think it's fair and the people who have committed the ultimate sin of just being unlucky get more and more resentful every time. RNG is a lazy rewards system. It's easy to come up with rationale as to why the lottery system is good, justifying how it makes the economy stable (spoiler: it doesn't. Estrid's post explained that better than I could), and saying "just keep trying eventually you'll win" to someone who has spent 38 years of life on this earth and never at any time once won any kind of raffle or lottery--it can just compound that frustration. Yes, I get that someone as unlucky as me is an outlier, but manufactured scarcity + random admittance = the smallest population of people having feelgood moments as possible against the backdrop of an ever-growing horde of people having feelsbad moments. It is what it is, and honestly at this point I've just written off ever getting a house unless there's literally any other way of obtaining one that doesn't rely on totally arbitrary probability-based selection. I get that it's better than the old system, but being better than a system that sucked more doesn't mean the current one sucks less than it does. Lipstick on a pig.

It still just absolutely astonishes me that they went through all the work of making Island Sanctuaries and gave it absolutely no gardening or furniture functionality. Locking an entire component of your game behind an RNG wall (and yes, I'm counting FC houses, since those rely on the same lottery as everything else; not everyone has the luxury of just waltzing into a FC and getting a room on demand, same goes for apartment vacancies on some home worlds) seems like a very very very bad design decision that should have been better corrected years ago.

Are we salty because we still don't have a house and so many others and friends do at this point? Sure. Same as everyone else venting their frustrations in this thread. Does it mean those concerns are invalid? Absolutely not.

This is valid critique of a system that rewards the smallest percentage of people possible under absolutely arbitrary conditions and it's absolutely appropriate for people on the crap end of that stick to voice their frustration and criticisms of the system that didn't work for them. We all love this game and none of us want to be resentful of the people who did win a house. We are legitimately happy for you, and yeah, some of this anger comes from jealousy. But that jealousy didn't have to happen, and we're frustrated because we just want a better system that works for more players than just the lucky ones. Because the one we've got is still more likely to disappoint than to please, and it doesn't have to.

When a group of players with multiple accounts buys up wards and sit on them on purpose is a problem. I do suggest 1 person per plot regardless of how many accounts they have, via an account verifying system. it would put an end to folks having multiple plots. and if the "Muh privacy" issue comes up that is an invalid excuse to exploit the housing system the way folks do...

you want to know that absolute worse thing about this system and its the same thing they have been doing for years. people who already have houses can keep bidding. its like WTF!!!!!!! i have been trying to get a house for 8 years, 8 YEARS!!! 2490 days subbed. I quit for a year because of housing. this time i bid on a house far away from the mb and aetherite, was the only bidder. was so excited standing by it though finally, then this A ho come buy and bids on it as 8:58, they win, laugh at me and don't even buy the house. same thing this week, was 1 of 2 and lost and they still haven't even bought that house. its horrible, if you already own a house, you shouldn't be able to bid on other plots period. if you want to move, then you should be required to abandon the plot. prior to the entry time slot.

2. If someone relocates, they haven't taken any extra houses, their old house is now available.
3. If you forced players to relinquish their old house first, before gambling on a new one, then people simply wouldn't do it. This would mean you're permanently locked into the first plot you win. This is just going to make people even more picky about the plots they bid on, so you'll get hundreds of bids on the popular plots, and 0 bids on the unpopular plots, and people will still be complaining about a lack of plots despite half the plots sitting empty because no one wants to commit to an ugly plot forever. People wouldn't be able to upsize from a Small to a Medium to a Large. Nobody would like this system.

The relos are opening up another house when they move though. That’s why they used to be instant. How many threads are telling everyone to just go for that small in the Goblet that no one wants, you can upgrade later when something better comes along. Now we want to stop relos? Heck I’m trying to downgrade and I’m still losing every week.

I think the issue is that this lotto cycle is too damn long, and that house the relo frees up doesn’t become available til the next cycle. You’re not getting the instant chance on the freed up house like you used to be able to, because it sits on hold til the next bidding cycle. I understand wanting to stagger the days so more people get a chance, but do we really need a 9-day cycle? 3 to enter, 2 to claim would be a modest scale-back, and it would still stagger to be different days every week.

Also I thought there was still a cooldown on relocation of like 30 days or something, but I can’t seem to find that info anywhere anymore. So if they’re relocating, they shouldn’t be able to do it like every cycle afaik.

I think a 7 day cycle could work with 4 days to bid and 3 to claim, but the problem is this could screw over people who might say be working the same four days every week, and thus always miss the bidding phase, or always miss the claim phase.

For relocation, personally I think relinquished plots in a claim cycle should be free to relocate to.
Currently, if someone relocates, their old plot sits vacant for 4 days before it even re-enters the lottery cycle. 4 days of complete lockout, can't even be bid on.
These plots that would otherwise be locked out, should be have a 'relocation exemption', so that those who want to move, and shuffle about in those 4 days of the claim period, and like a real life housing chain could just keep relinquishing and relocating along. This would speed up the process for those who are relocating, while not impacting the lottery process for those who placed bids in the bidding phase.

1. yes people will bid on small plots as a prank with no intention of buying it.
2. opening the old plot to have to go with a lottery yet again, is not a selling point.
3. your wrong, many people who want a house will buy ugly slots, that's literally what i tried to get a house. this system has been so unfair for so long that i don't care if you want a upgrade. you say people wont like it, well people don't like the current system now.

Yeah, this happened to a fellow FC member last week. She was the only bidder, someone else bid last minute and won, then declined to purchase.

I don't know how many do it as a joke. I'm sure some do. With a little practice, you can pull enough for a small house in 2-3 days just playing the marketboard. But I think a large portion are probably people who changed their mind for whatever reason.

A good friend of mine was sweating all week, because she accidentally bid on a medium in an FC only ward. She was just praying she didn't win. (First time I was congratulating someone for losing their bid).

I think there should be a bad luck protection system with the lottery. For every plot you lose, you get an extra ticket for next time. This rewards players who will literally bid on every plot and punishes newcomers and people that will only select a specific house. So, your chances will increase of winning the more persistent you are. Granted, it won't work well for certain worlds that are overpopulated, but as long as there is a steady supply of housing weekly with auto demolition and new wards opening up once in a while, this should see people that genuinely want a house getting a house.

Of course there are players doing it as a prank. They like to watch the world burn, gil is too easy to get and there's too little in the game to spend gil on other than houses.

There's only 40 lottery periods in a year. That means someone could relocate from small to small to small each lottery period and it would only cost them about 130 million gil to do it for a year straight. Considering the number of players buying gold reskin mounts that cost 50 million gil, there are plenty of players with more than enough gil to be doing this.

Fortunately, the number of players doing it is a lot smaller than some fear.

Relocation cooldown was never more than 5 minutes. Certainly players had suggested the cooldown be increased prior to the lottery but SE never made a change.

The lottery itself makes the cooldown pointless since the relocator still has to beat the lottery to be able to relocate. That's not a guarantee as relocation no longer has any sort of priority in the system.

Yes realised that on another post. Just checked the personals and I stopped counting at 30 smalls and at least 5 mediums showing and of the two random (m and s) ones I checked both have no bids

Smalls are less desirable too, especially for a big FC you have to keep that in mind.

I doubt there are any large FCs stuck in a small except by choice. They don't form overnight and have plenty of time to acquire a medium if not a large by the point where they truly need the extra room for FC gatherings.

Wish they’d do this… I’d already be home by now! lol it just feels so slow, especially when you’re losing every lotto, having to wait for the next to come around is excruciating…

Everyone keeps saying the system has improved, please explain to me how a waiting list made randomized is improvement. Please explain how if you walk into a packed DMV and then a streamer suddenly brings in a substantial increase to the DMV. The soloution is to randomize the order of the line...... please anyone explain to me how it's a better system and how.

Well, the obvious takeaway is that it was never actually meant to be a waiting list in the first place. Relocations were ostensibly meant to be a convenience offering rather than an end unto themselves. And, well, it's pretty silly to characterize "get literally any house and then be the first one to arrive" as a 'waiting list' in the first place.

Like, regardless of how anyone feels about it or whether or not it's a good thing, it's extremely clear that the intent is for there to be no difference between veteran players and new players in terms of accessibility.

The lottery makes things better in the sense that people can now take 2 minutes to enter the lottery and have 8 hours available to play the rest of the game instead of spending those 8 hours clicking a placard.

Obviously it doesn't address the core problem of supply.

Would you really be happier sitting in the drive-thru lane at McDonalds for 8 hours just to be told that the driver before you got the last burger?

It's more that the 8 hour a week player has the same opportunity as the 8 hour a day player. Veterans will always have the advantage of already having the gil while the new player will be struggling to get those millions at first.
