Reaper Class Is Disappointing

To start, I want to say the gameplay of Reaper is fine. I enjoy it a ton, although maybe difficult or bad for pvp for those who care about that. My disappointment with Reaper is everything else that happens from deciding to main Reaper as your dps class of choice.

1. Relics

Reaper has no relic weapons at all as far as i can tell. I don't care if its a new class and as such has no relics from old expansions. Every class should be able to get every relic weapon, period.

2. Reaper Armor

Reaper armor and glamour options are extremely annoying and disappointing. There are at least 2 or 3versions of the default reaper armor, and at least 2 or 3 versions of the artifact armor set which isn't as unique cause an npc in the story also wears it. For a class called Reaper, the first thing that comes to mind is not medium to heavy armor. When I think of Reaper, I don't imagine being Dragoon with a Scythe instead of a spear. When I think of reaper I imagine wearing cloth primarily, leather optionally. How many options does Reaper have to not look like a dragoon, or not look ridiculous, or like a Samurai with a scythe, very few. Reaper should be allowed to wear anything that a tank can not wear. The very armor designs of reaper are not even realistic to what historically reaper or scythe users in general would actually wear. This is so frustrating that it actually makes me want to quit because all my armor and glamor options are largely immersion breaking.

3. Reaper Gear from NPCs

Most npcs do not offer reaper weapons, or even armor. Even worse i can go to PvP and 99% of the pvp items are not available to Reaper. At the very least they have maybe 1 weapon, which im sure is a reskin, and then a couple armor sets which are obviously just Dragoon sets with Reaper tagged on. The 1 actual reaper specific armor is literally the artifact armor 1:1. Some of the best armor pieces for Reaper are not even obtainable anymore, like Archfiend set, which is very frustrating. If I want to look like a class other than Dragoon on my Reaper I have 2 options, the reaper set, and the artifact armor, which you can also get from pvp, and really the only unique thing about the artifact armor is the hat itself.

If I recall correctly the reason classes cant wear off class armor as glamour is because theoretically it removes the identity of the class or role. However when you got people running around in bathing suits, or stuffed animal cosplay, etc it kind of destroys this supposed fantasy especially when you add in all the paid cosmetics. IMO the glamour gating really needs to go. There is literally infinite possibilities i would love if i could mix pieces from across all the classes.

Glamour aside i love the class, but Reaper needs more love. Their having an identity crisis right now.

Reaper was introduced in Endwalker and has an Endwalker relic. We're just only at the first stage so far. Other jobs didn't get relics from previous expansions either. They get current content and new content going forward. It's no different for other jobs. The Omega Reaper weapon was recently added simply because it's the base model for Ultimate.

The same applies to other gear. Reaper didn't exist prior to this expansion, so there is no previous Reaper-themed gear. It shares Maiming gear with Dragoon.

If you want to get technical Reapers are the personification of Death, aka the Grim Reaper. This is always personified as a cloaked being, skeleton or not. In every Final Fantasy game this is the case except 14. Historically in Anime, Manga, and video games such as .hack// G.U, Japanese media never depicts Scythe users in Heavy Armor.

Reapers in FF14 are inconsistent with the representation of what they are supposed to be. They only look similar to reapers mid combat, which is dumb. Scythe users are like rogues, their supposed to be fast, agile, and elusive. You cant do that in heavy armor. For a Japanese game you would expect them to stick to their roots.

going forward there will be more themed gear, but for the most part most of the armor is going to be shared with another class. they don't go back and backfill reaper themed armor.

Technically speaking from a historical standpoint, the personification of death has always been a skeleton, which is true, for the most part. But the reaper garb, no. That was created during 14th century Europe when the Black Death was roaming around.

If you look at other historical cultures on their representation of Death, you'll find a lot are actually cloakless and scythless. Look at Mictēcacihuātl, she was the Aztec Deity of death and sported no cloak, no scythe, nothing. Same with Yama, except the only difference is that he actually had flesh. Blue even!

I always forget about Chronos. Didn't really stick with Roman Mythology. But he is too a deity of death. He does sport the scythe but no cloak and no skeleton.

So I guess sorry that a Japanese game didn't choose the one representation of Death that you wanted.

Aside from making assumptions based on the name, FFXIV Reapers are not a personification of Death. They were Garlean farmers who made pacts with Voidsent due to their inability to use aether. The Reaper name is a legitimate reference to their roots with a supernatural nuance. We are not "Grim Reapers" who should be cloaked or skeletal.

I don't disagree that "armored" is still out of place. It's simply a side effect a new class having to share gear with an older one that is thematically different. However, I also think you're possibly expecting Reaper to be something other than what's intended.

Reaper is primarily disappointing as a slow as molasses builder spender design so you can Fell Cleave 4-5 times. It looks cool but leaves much to be desired. Wish it interacted with Sacrifice Stacks more instead of just being yet another 2 minute meta burst class.

I really like the Enshroud form but it doesn't last very long to ever notice it.

I think it might be nice if they gave other jobs relic and gearsets from previous expansions to give incentives to do old content but that isn't going to happen. They literally don't care and they have the majority of the userbase that thinks the same.

I don't expect too many changes to be made to Reaper. If anything happens it'll be in 7.0. Which granted they might just give you Communio 2 and call it a day.

Malthael and Nazguls with heavy armors say hi. You can also glam light clothes or dresses with a hood so your whole point doesn’t stand on its legs currently.

I would have thought you would speak how the actual gameplay, where RPR has a cool burst phase but is extremely bland outside of it. Super slow, I play SAM and MCH as dps and they feel so much more dynamic.

Right that was kinda my thing and then it was just about cosmetics when I walked in. Like who cares.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember the devs saying they would hold back on making gear from past expansions for the newest classes due to the amount of work it'd take. I don't remember when they stopped but there was quite some choice at the release of HW. I wish they'd at least design a weapon for the new jobs when they release a glowing crafted version of an ex weapon.

I'll say this up front (after I wrote all that out...): I hope you can find some stuff you're looking for and maybe browsing through the Eorzea Collection and people's suggestions here find some stuff you like.

1. Has never happened in the history of the game with the ONLY exception being NIN, and that was a special case. They're having Relics added (as are SGE) right now. I think they also may back-date the Ultimates by making weapons for the new Jobs for them, like how they made Thordain Extreme now drop RPR and SGE weapons since they added the models for them for the Dragonsong Ultimate and, as the models were now in the game with the special visual effect, they can put the matte version into the Extreme Trial's loot table without issue. This is what is typical for new Jobs, but it expands as they're in more expansions. Moreover, you have access to all past Maiming sets, so it's not like you have no other gear options, and you also have all the level 1 glamour gear with no stats that can be used on any Job, or all the PvP sets for Maiming. And I imagine Reapers wearing medium armor. That is, in fact, the first thing that comes to mind. Like how DRK's wear plate, I'd expect RPRs to wear mail or scale armor, with some options for leather. Which is what they have. And no, they should not "be allowed to wear anything that a tank can not wear". No other Job gets that privilege, and seeing a RPR in Caster or Healer gear would look even more ridiculous than "a Samurai with a scythe" looks. (Never mind most SAM gear IS cloth/leather, the thing you're asking for... <_<)

3. Third verse same as the first. This is true in all expansions for all added Jobs. They aren't going to make a ton of gear that is useless. The reason all those level 60 vendors have WHM gear and not RPR gear is because people are still level WHMs in that content and need those as actual gear upgrades while RPRs start at level 70 and so have no need of gear below it. That said, a lot of low level gear HAS been made where RPRs can use it, just not weapons because that would require them to spend hours of Dev time just making various flavors of weapon that 99.99% of the playerbase won't ever use or even see. That said, some old content has weapons backdated to them, such as Palace of the Dead and Heaven on High both having two stages of weapon for all Jobs (except BLU) in the game, including newly added ones since your character automatically equips those weapons when you zone in. The copied armor in PvP is usually different. It may be the same model but likely has different dye setups. SGE has the same thing.

Archfiend set is very recent and is with the PvP Season system. That's just the way it works, but it's expected to be obtainable again in the future. Indeed, the ONLY gearsets that AREN'T obtainable are those special PvP ones. Of which there has been exactly 1 to date. So you say "best armor pieces for Reaper", are you talking about A SINGLE SET of armor? Because what other armor sets have been made unobtainable? The False Monarchy will be after this Season, but that would bring the total number of unobtainable sets...to 2. This sounds like a complaint you're using just to pad your complaint list. Not only that, the Archfiend set is heavy PLATE armor! The very thing you just got through saying doesn't fit RPR's aesthetic. You need to stop arguing against your own argument as examples for why your Job is slighted...

Take a look for example at the Void Ark Mail of Maiming gearset. It's not heavy armor, it's more light like mail, and would look fine on a RPR. (It's also something you can farm fairly effectively during Moogle Tome events when its one of the featured Duties.)

I'm also REALLY curious what you think historic scythe users wore? Historically, scythes were not weapons of war, they were farmer tools. A modification of it, the Kama (a short, one-handed scythe) was used by some assassin type groups and irl ninjas, sometimes with a chain attachment, but it was a rare weapon and difficult combat style to teach and learn. There weren't a lot of historic scythe users, and nothing like anime scythe users since the weapon is so unwieldy and requires a lot of understanding and training with rotational momentum to use effectively. Most people with access to a scythe could just as easily make a staff or a spear, and both were easier to use as weapons. So people that DID use scythes in combat were probably garbed like either LNCers (not even DRGs), and obviously RPRs can wear all the armor that LNCs can. Most war scythes were more like halberds, having the blade put on the long axis instead of 90 degrees. They were used as such by peasant armies, meaning again, you're talking about dressing like a farmer or MAYBE a LNC/Wood Wailer in padded or light leather armor. And again, plenty of those gearsets exist from ARR, and you can dye them black if you want a darker aesthetic.

I'm not sure what history you're appealing to, here...

That said, I agree sometimes it would be neat to use other gear sets, and it's weird some of the pairings; for instance, WHM is a druid/priest while SGE is a wizard/scholar/doctor, yet they use the same set...why? And why can a WAR use the Plague Doctor set? Some stuff like that doesn't make sense. But that's not a RPR specific argument.

RPR isn't having an identity crisis because of this. Talk about overstating one's case...

When you remove seasonal only items and mog station items, all reapers look trash with very few exceptions, and yes i have looked at all of them.

The coolest looking Reaper glamours use seasonal pvp items. The next best thing is Zeros armor set, and then after that its the reaper set. The only changes are usually a single piece of armor, the chest piece, or the helmet.

Reapers are just FFXI DRKs in disguise lol

Also of note, if you look into the lore behind RPR, they did start out as farmhands in the Garlean nation, then became something akin to local watchmen and heroes to the common folk. Hence your class trainer being a Garlean expat. As for gear, that will come, has come to an extent and we can expect more as we get closer to Dawntrail. Wouldn't sweat it, just enjoy the class. I like it because its fast DPS, or at least feels that way to me.

Dont care what anyone says you are absolutely correct, all the gear is tailored towards DRG. IMO DNC should have shared gear with MNK and RPR with DRK :D
