Is this just for the new housing lottery dash? Every world server can't be as jam-packed as Balmung... I'm paying multiple characters on one server and can't make any (that's been an issue on Balmung forever though). :(

All of crystal is currently in a congested status. Can't make new characters anywhere. I think we are going to see more and more of that as they add data centers and new servers. The idea is to balance populations.
That seems unlikely to me, but then I don't have access to their server census either... sounds more like they just locked it to force people to go elsewhere.
Yeeeeep. And sadly I expect it to work poorly.
If anything, it was Aether that should have been locked, especially with the culture norm having so rapidly become "everybody have fun tonight, everybody Aether tonight ..." if you actually want to DF with decent queue times (FWIW, on Dynamis, it seems to be 11ish minute advertised queues for EW casual content. As White Mage. I can only imagine what it's like for the poor DPS), or if you want to PF at all - in fact, exactly what I feared would happen with DC visit (just like with World visit, the player culture becomes forcibly dominated by the most hardcore datacenter).
We've probably hit the WoW peak, and managing server population at that point is impossible ("balancing" actually backfires later on in the game's lifecycle, since as the smaller servers' population wanes people transfer more and more to the largest servers, leaving most of the smaller ones as noob traps. At least DC and World visit is a thing here, unlike many games where all you can do at that point is restart or pay a pretty penny to transfer off ... conveniently, of course, such servers are universally "recommended" by MMO operators for new players, LOL).
Yeah I got lucky when I was able to transfer Renalt from Faerie to Balmung. I have alts I would like to make there but it seems like it won't happen for a long time. Might make my alt characters on one of each Data Center. I can always DC/World Visit if needed.
So the funneling to Dynamis has begun!
While I'd entirely agree there's some element of directing players to the new DC, I also wouldn't be too shocked if the populations here might be just a little higher than average. Prior to DC travel, having a Crystal character would be the only means of getting to hang out on Balmung.
Check out xivcensus, just google it and you will find the population data.
Balmung actually has the lowest overall population on NA of characters of all levels.
NA realms are all over 20k endgame players (players that have completed the achievement 'endwalker') , with Gilgamesh being just over 25k.
The new servers have much lower populations, so its find that they are locking older DC's and letting people migrate to the new ones, DC travel lets you go anywhere after all.
I wonder how long this would take, i assumed it was cause of the new patch and things would level out eventually. Not saying i was trying to get into crystal though, i was trying to get onto jenova but had to settle for siren at the moment since jenova got locked.

And I had just about talked a couple of IRL friends to come join my husband and I on our server, too. Also we were wanting to roll new alts ourselves, since we had just come back from a long hiatus and wanted to see the whole story again. *snaps fingers*
Here's hoping this restriction doesn't stick around for very long at all, I guess!
same here, hoping it doesn't stay this way long. been trying to transfer back to mateus for a while.
Should just put Balmung on its own DC with no DC travel and lock it.
Agreed here as someone who also stayed on Materia for a while.
People who are calling Dynamis dead or a problem really need to go visit Materia and see how actually bad it can get. Dynamis is no where near that level.
I do think they should have locked Aether though compared to Crystal as Aether has a much higher pop AFAIK.
Well, can be a whole lot worse as others have said, I know for new players/alt rollers(like i) it'll be a pain specially in 7.0 as new, returning, and Fantasia/Alt-Characters will lock/time servers for awhile.(Can only hope the potential influx will even out Dynamis, and give some life to Materia)
XIVcensus focuses on max level characters. The all characters data is going to include trial characters and bots as well. Balmung has been on the Congested status the most over the years so it would make sense it would have the lowest overall characters created.
Lucky Bancho's census (he does them roughly quarterly) will track characters over level 60 so while closer to accurate, it still doesn't tell the entire story. It's deliberately focusing on characters over level 60 to remove trial characters from the number (which also eliminates most but not all RMT bots). But it also eliminates low level characters belonging to new players who are subscribed.
XIVCensus (last updated start of January as of this post): https://ffxivcensus.com/
Lucky Bancho's census spreadsheet (most recent update Dec 31st): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...#gid=627409761
For the Lucky Bancho census, the column to pay attention to is Column N ("this time") which is the current number of characters over level 60.
If you sort that column in descending order, all 8 Crystal worlds are at the top of the list. The Congested worlds on Aether and Primal match the top 3 worlds of each respective data center for level 90 characters (last column on the spreadsheet).
Personally, I'm surprised that SE didn't mark all Aether and Primal worlds congested alongside Crystal but then perhaps that was predicted to cause problems by forcing all bots to also be created on the new worlds. Bots on Dynamis are already pretty high profile because of their number compared to the relatively low player population.
I'm also surprised to see that the EU worlds (other than the 4 new ones) have pushed Tonberry out of the top position for non-NA worlds. Tonberry used to have a substantial advantage in population among the non-NA worlds.
It actually doesn't. According to the recent Lucky Bancho census, Crystal is absolutely killing Aether in terms of population. Literally every single Crystal server has surpassed Aether's. The major difference is Crystal focuses more on casual content, roleplay and venues while Aether focuses on higher end stuff like EX and Savage. Which is why it always seems more popular as people from Crystal, Primal and Dynamis travel over.
At some point, I do wonder if they'll ever consider locking DC travel to try encouraging people not to congregate on one data center. JP has been loudly complaining about it since Mana has essentially become their version of Aether.
They could fix this problem by incentivising roulette or content on your home DC or on underpopulated DCs you'd have less people running to crystal to get content done. I was surprised to find out the road to 80 buff works on all content on all data centers as long as your home server is on Dynamis, which just encourages you to go to another DC where queues aren't half an hour per roulette
Literally everyone wants to be on Crystal. We are the superior DC.
