A large portion of the playerbase is Japanese so of course there will be a lot of Japanese winners, there's no big conspiracy behind it.
yes, but that playerbase is eclipsed by both the north american and european playerbase. i don't think there is a conspiracy, i just think it's a funny coincidence. don't you?

Look at this: https://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/worldstatus/
Japan is the largest region.
Ever noticed how the art submitted by the Japanese players is really well drawn and has lots of Japanese text explaining it?

The NA entries oft look like they were done in crayon by a kindergartener. (not all, of course, but so many)
That assuming all servers are the same size. They aren't

Japan only makes up 15%, 20% for Europe and 60% for America.
This website is so weird. Why is this table titled FFXIV players but the legend at the bottom talks about LoL? Why does it have so many ads? Why does it say it uses "various sources" but cites none of them? Genuinely. I feel like I wouldn't trust it personally, even assuming SQEX releases numbers internally and these are leaks.

I'm pretty sure it's also out of date. Since it still list PS3 support.
https://ffxivcensus.com/ is another example, JP doesn't have as large of a playerbase as the world status would have you believe
I don't know what that website is and I wouldn't trust it.
These sites are more trustworthy for your data.

Maybe Japanese people are just culturally more organised and more likely to get around to submitting their entry by the due date?
I'm just sad this one didn't win.

Considering the contest is a visual one, the sizes of each region are irrelevant. NA could be 1000x larger than JP but it'd be irrelevant if they had 0 artists.
That being said, a browse of reddit when everyone was posting their designs they submitted 2 months back gives quite a bit of insight into why the majority of winners were JP - lots of the designs I saw NA/EU posters submitting were either not great visually, joke weapons (like the SGE weapon that was just a bunch of sharks with laser beams attached to their heads, or the one that was literally just a shoebill on a stick with its beak acting as the scythe blade) or had fantastical elements that would make them extremely hard to adapt to in-universe designs/lore. If the JP submissions were more consistent on in-universe design and more serious entries on average, it'd be no surprise they'd win the majority of spots.
There's no conspiracy or coincidence at play, just differences in culture that I would believe led to many more realistic to implement designs that stood a chance in the running on the JP side than the NA/EU one on average.
we really need more cute or fun reaper weapons cuz the only one that isnt stupid edgy is the padjal scythe which is all just a pure white untextured asset than anything tbh
I will go for the sage cutlery when they get added 6.5 years from now (seriously whyyyyy does this all take so long just dump these in the gold saucer for 100k mgp or smth) but it was the only one that looked good to me ntbr
There’s a few if you know where to look. I use the Crimson Lotus scythe from Ala Mhigo/Kugane/Rhalger’s Reach dungeon for my reaper glam that has a far-eastern look and bright red coral?/driftwood? with beads. The fae dungeon from ShB drops a scythe with feather motif and a crystal, and the mine dungeon drops a nice-looking silver and blue one, neither of which are dripping in goth.
The bluespirit ShB crafted set scythe is pretty nice too with a glowing blue blade.
Sigh. Another massively overengineered piece of crap RPR weapon. And it's again going to be so big it inflates like a balloon when you unsheath it. The job literally has one good weapon model with padjali.
Possibly.
It is also likely that the tastes of the Japanese players coincide to a signficant extent with the tastes of the (probably mostly Japanese) people who decide the winners.
I haven't checked if it really is true that the majority the winners are Japanese, but assuming they are, it is probably not a coincidence. There is likely some bias involved, but probably not deliberately so.
Japanese MMO favors Japanese players, say it aint so.
Next you'll tell me there's a reason all the live letters are held at 4am in the morning for the west coast, and not even given a translator most of the time
mmm. y'all don't even bother saying "I'm not racist, but.."
The problem here is also ease of putting them in game. Not persé Japan having better designs, just that it might be too difficult for some to implement.
Hence this line. Without looking at every single entry (which would be impossible anyway), you can only base it on anecdotes. Thus, when out of 25 reddit posts of people's submissions I saw, only 5 of them stood even remotely serious chance at winning due to the majority being either joke weapons or badly done visually or were just far too out of scope for the game due to fantastical elements, It's merely my anecdote that the JP submissions would be far and large more consistent to have a shot at winning to achieve such a wide sweep of winning spots.
But hey, if someone wants to insinuate JP bias here, I'll just point to the fact this is far from the first contest they've ever ran, and plenty of other contests have had NA/EU take predominant amount of winning spots before. If they did have JP bias as far as contests, it would be evident across all of them, not just in this one.
Yeah, that one in particular got a large chuckle out of me. Would make a great Gold Saucer weapon if they ever do anymore joke weapons down the line.

Wow I just looked at the sage and reaper winners and... the finalists for sage almost all look so much better than the winners, at least IMO.
I'm sad mine didn't win... q_q

Congratulations to the winners! I liked many of the runner up submissions too.

Cool concept and a nice change from lasers and syringes.

The symbology is perfect for reapers. The crescent moon is curved like a scythe blade and the Moon goes from light to dark, dark to light.
I hope we see a whole gear set similar to this next expansion.
