Could Psychic be the next caster?

Hello,

As much as I am all for geomancer being the next caster I’m not gonna put all my eggs into that one basket.

Some people have been throwing around psychic job for a while now and just want to see what others think about it being the new unique caster job exclusive to FFXIV. I know we had a psychic job in FFX-2 but it’s not a job that’s been throughout the series. Unless I’m wrong then someone correct me. If we don’t get geomancer I’d absolutely love Psychic as a new caster job.

What does everyone think? We don’t have any mental focus type jobs at all.

I'd actually prefer PSY over GEO, especially just because of how much CNJ has already claimed GEO's core stuff for its own roots (Onmyoji might be able to cover those parts of GEO while still being unique enough, but idk).

That said, I'd want more than just a "pure mana" / "mind-magic" reskin on an otherwise generic/rehashed Caster kit (or on, worse, a single bloat-inherent gimmick like Black/White Mana where the core distinction is solely nominal).

Yeah I love how you already abbreviated it (PSY) that’s fantastic. I definitely feel like it will be unique and stand out over the other casters if they did go that route. Okay now you have me more excited about PSY now lol.

id like psychic, geomancer would be another slap in the face to healers. then again SE thrives on that

that being said, yoshida wants to move away from ff jobs, so whether the FFx2 will count is another matter. Sage's 4 gun design is new but the job itself is not since its a carbon copy of sch

reaper is new though, even if it plays a lot like the bastard offspring of hw drk and drg


I am surprised we haven't had a job with more water magic yet since they refuse to give whm any meaningful water magic like flood, water 1-4, etc

That remains to be decided, apparently. I have my $0.02 of preference (though, pretty indifferent on the whole, so long as PSY would feel distinct from any existing casters and fun in its own right), but since we're on page 1, let's start things off collaboratively.

Some questions, for anyone and everyone who wants to chip in their thoughts:

I'll take some of those questions, then. Just based on personal speculation and whatever comes to mind. Nothing concrete, mind.

1. In lore, I think Krile would be a candidate for the PSY concept. She's been stated to have a bigger role in 7.0, so having a Job change could be one way to tease it.

2. I think being a PSY would lead to some interesting personal dilemmas, such as a character using Psychic powers to either read minds/manipulate odds for personal gain (think card counting/learning some classified secrets), or using them in a way that keeps secrets safe or allows people to realize potential they never knew existed within. It could be a simple "teach this character humility/great power, great responsibility" angle for the Job quests, at least at first.

3. A few come to mind, Sharlayan and Corvos are a couple. The former is more as a "secret society" within the Studium or the Forum that Krile happens to be selected into, and the latter could be as an inherited/signature trait inherited by some Corvosi. G'raha Tia could perhaps come into play too? Maybe Meracydia if you wanna throw some dragon/Allagan lore into the mix, but we'll see.

4. Beyond raw power, I think PSY could offer defensive utility for the raid, including a barrier, a healing cooldown, and ways for the party to move out of or cheese AOE mechanics (think Cloud Deck/guren lagen (sp?) teleport pads), but not include a rez. Leaving that one for SMN and RDM. But, unlike other casters and healers, I would give PSY an interrupt as a Job ability, also on a 30s CD. Makes sense that they could attack the target's mind with a quick jolt to interrupt something.

5 and 6. (melding them together) Arcane damage with purple glows, and maybe more lightning damage too. That, and attacks that inflict mental breakdowns in lore descriptions, or can be used to make shocks and pulses around the floor. That said, my main concern would be flashes and potential epilepsy triggers. So that would require some tweaking. As for balancing, I would borrow more from SMN and make it a mobile caster for the most part, but also include a few hard casts to keep them honest. But I wouldn't include any offensive raid cooldowns, so it can be considered a "selfish DPS" in that regard. Only raid cooldowns would be defensive/healing for specific moments or for recovery, all of the PSY offensive cooldowns would only benefit the PSY itself, and be independent of raid timers.

7. For a job gimmick/gauge, I'd call it "Psychic Flow", which would act as a builder/spender. I'd give specific spells a certain chance, and very specific cooldowns a guaranteed chance, to generate a stack of this Flow, and the PSY can hold, for the sake of the example, 5 stacks, which would show on the UI in a manner akin to MNK Chakra, but generates at a different/slower pace. Specific spells would cost 1, 2, or 3 Psychic Flow, and this cost would not change. Overcapping on stacks would obviously be discouraged, so there's that to consider.

Psychic was a dressphere (job) in Final Fantasy X-2 actually.

Their abilities included long-ranged, invisible attacks using their glowing hands, firing lasers from their hands to deal damage, inflicting confusion, granting themselves Haste or buffing their accuracy and evasion, stopping time for all enemies for 10 seconds, teleporting behind enemies, and making the party immune to physical damage, magical damage, or both.

It would honestly be kind of interesting to see the international X-2 jobs be added into the game and also add in the Festivalist as perhaps a scouting job, assuming we go caster/scouting melee over caster/tank.

Personally, I lean more toward Onmyoji at the present, but I wouldn't be unhappy at all with Psychic.

Personally, I feel like Psychic would be better off as a Tank rather than a DPS.
It even has an invulnerability skill with "Excellence", so...

I think it could be a good fit for a tank, but I don't think that reasoning should come from any preexisting skills in a game or design paradigm largely incompatible with XIV.

I want to see FFXIV's PSY in FFXIV, not FFX-2's. It's fine to take some fun cues from elsewhere, including even other franchises or even proto-concepts, but I don't want to see XIV's jobs constrained to an earlier version of, overall and pound for pound, far more limited potential.

It's be nice to have a caster that actually uses their hands as the weapon
like wristlet or gauntlets as weapons

Aside from Beastmaster / Geomancer / Psychic? Only a few things come to mind for me with new Jobs that Square can draw inspiration from.

• Whip/chain weapon Job think FFVIII's Quistis
• Blitzball from FFX implementing the sport as well
• Something with FF Tactics Advance Judge weapon (Bishop?)
• w/e FFXV's Noctus is classified with constant teleporting
• A ranged job that revolves around Dynamis
• Chrono/Time Mage from multiple FF games
• FFXI has Runefencer?

Yoshi P said in an interview that its difficult to make a new Job if its just going to be similar to another, as in not unique enough. Looking at what they have left to draw inspiration from to stuff FFXIV with? I see why.

I'd much rather have Square upgrade every existing Job with more depth and more proper balancing before trying to sell the masses with another Job. Hot-take I guess of mine and a new Job release just sells better. Who knows, throw in a Keyblade Job in there as well for the next Melee Job in the future.

I thought Psychic would be great, but Sage is basically what I thought Psychic would be as a job.
