PLEASE.. for the love of The Twelve, give us a TACKLE BOX/BAG! PLEASE?

I love fishing, in real life and in games. The fishing in FFXIV is the best I've ever experienced. It's engaging, it requires thought and can be challenging in a fun way. I love it! What I don't love is that it consumes my entire chocobo bag (I even have the expanded saddlebags). I understand I could dedicate a retainer but it doesn't solve the problem of having to find a bell (teleport costs) just to get a bait to fly back (with more teleport costs) to the place that I wanted to fish. Honestly though, we shouldn't have to dedicate a retainer to this. It's tackle/bait... I mean, c'mon. I absolutely love the complexity of needing specific tackle/bait for a specific fish - it's realistic and immersive! BUT... being an avid fisher in the game, I shouldn't have to dedicate personal space solely to bait. There's already a level of inventory management when fishing along with moving specific baits from saddlebags to inventory to have on hand ... but having an additional saddlebag dedicated to bait/tackle only would really make fishing so much more enjoyable! Please... please give us a tacklebox/tacklebag.

100% agree. I usually dont mind managing my inventory among myself, the saddlebag and retainers but for fishing its very annoying having to carry all kinds of bait. Adding a tackle box is not only a sensible thing for the profession but it would also make fishing a lot more enjoyable and convenient

We've had this discussion over in DoL. They're not going to make a special inventory. You don't have to carry all that bait.

Get organized and clear your log by region.

If you don't want to take my word for it, find the fishing community and people will back this up.

If they can do it for the island, why cant they do it for fishing, maybe we dont need 500 baits, reduce it to 20 and just give it its own inventory, the idea that fishing needs like 500 different baits is absurd to begin with.

The island is its own instance that has a special inventory. It's nothing new. They did it in Bozja and Eureka. Fishing happens all over the world. That logic doesn't apply. This inventory would have to be tied to the character and they've already maxed that out.

Let's go the hypothetical route and say they make an inventory to hold all the bait. You eventually clear the log and are left with an inventory that's big, empty and useless.

So, back to my original point: Fish by region because nothing from heavensward area is used in stormblood or any other region.

If you really don't want to deal with all the different baits and feel they were a waste of time and space, there's always the versatile lure.


Here's one of the threads I was talking about from the relevant section of the forum. Do yourself a favor and do some reading through that and other posts here and elsewhere on line. Fishing is easy to manage if you just get organized and that really isn't that hard.

There are exactly three baits that will suit for nearly all occasions. A Freshwater Boilie, a Saltwater Boilie and a Versatile Lure. They were introduced back in Shadowbringers.

These fishing lures are such an archaic system. It would be easier for them to make types of fish, and 3 different baits. For example: Bait for large, medium and small fish. Then just fit each fish on each bait.
The idea of having a separate inventory for baits is a good one, but the company is too lazy to do that, they can't even increase their inventory with each expansion.

My Chocobo Saddlebag is my tacklebox. Plus whatever miscellaneous stuff I want.

i've been asking for this for awhile hopefully we get it one day, as for my chocobo saddlebag i never use it cause half the time i forget i even have a chocobo i need to summon it more often

The saddlebag functionally has nothing to do with your chocobo; it was just a cute label to stick on an additional inventory that you can't access in dungeons. You can access it in towns though, even though your chocobo can't go there.

It is definitely helpful to have your chocobo summoned while you're out in the field, particularly if you're fighting things at your own level or doing FATEs.

You actually almost always have access to your saddlebag at all times even if you have your chocobo out or not. You just cant access it during dungeons or other instanced content. Its pretty much an extra inventory box for you.

If you're fishing just to spend time reeling in random fish, sell all your bait and just buy Versatile Lures.

If you're fishing for something specific, trash anything you can't just easily buy again.

If you're fishing to fill out your log, after clearing an expansion, you don't truly need any of that old bait; newer fish from newer expansions will require newer bait.



As someone clearing out big fishing (just finished up HW), I can tell you from experience that you really don't need to be holding on to very much bait at any given time. Being generous, I doubt you need more than a dozen inventory slots dedicated to fishing bait if you'd narrow your focus down. And that's including the 3 baits for Ocean Fishing.

I totally understand where you are coming from and have thought about it. But sometimes, I just want to fish as I come upon a "zen fishing moment." And like you and others have noted, there's the versatile lure. But man, it rubs me wrong every time someone says just use versatile lure. I get it though. I honestly like the idea of the different baits for different fish. I just think if they are going to have that layer of complexity (not just 3-4 baits) then they should have some kind of tackle bag with a limited number of spaces, maybe 30 or so. I'm not looking for a solution to hold every single type of bait out there.

That already exists in the form of boilies and versatile lures but it comes with its own set of challenges. Namely, you lose the ability to target certain catches. A versatile lures are great if you're just trying to catch one of everything for the log but is less than worthless if you're trying to catch a specific fish.

they could amplify that so it's not so difficult to target a specific fish. Perhaps leaving the Identical cast with an increased chance of catching the fish you caught earlier, but the duration increased to a few minutes instead of 15 seconds.

Bait variety is for targeting specific fish. And, quite frankly, most of them don't even need to be "targeted." You've got the ones that will trigger an Intuition, most of which will all favor the same small handful of baits per expansion. And you've got ones you need for mooching, which is much lower priority and, outside of Intuition mooching, can just as easily be done with a Versatile Lure.

I'm telling you. As someone going back through and filling out the Fishing Log for each expansion, you really, really, really do not need to hold onto nearly as much bait as you think. Once you've caught every ARR fish, you're good to throw out 90% of ARR bait. I've cleared up through HW, and, near as I can tell, I will literally not need anything I've used prior to target anything worthwhile in StB.

If you're actually serious about catching fish, you really don't need as much bait as you think. And if you're not serious about catching fish, what's even the point of having all that bait anyway? Grab something that will catch anything and just cast your cares away.

Bait should just be turned into skills instead of items, like ranged ammo were items long ago

The island inventory is attached to your island, not to your character. You don't carry it around with you.

There's no need to carry around all the baits with you all the time. Each zone has a vendor that sells the basic baits for the zone so you can buy when you enter the zone and discard/sell when you're done with a zone. The only bait you should be carrying with you all the time is the bait you're frequently using.

My personal example: I'm into hunts. I help with S rank spawns so I carry wildfowl flies for Judgeray and butterworms for Glimmerscale. I'm also into crafting and Custom Deliveries. I carry the Metal Spinner (designed for the delivery fish) and Mackerel Strips (to catch Thavnairian Calamari for foods). I'll also carry Versatile Lure in case I want to make a quick trip for some common fish needed for crafting or join friends on an Ocean Voyage.

So that's a total of 5 baits/lures I carry with me all the time. If I get in the mood to chip away at my Fish Log, I'll buy the bait/lures for zone I've picked at the time I do it then get rid of any leftovers when I'm done.

There's no need to carry every bait/lure all the time because you're not going to be using all of them all the time.

Unpopular opinion, get rid of all bait and just make the fishing spots level appropriate.

I shouldn't need a 3rd party website to track the various baits for various fish. This isn't real life, it's a game. I shouldn't have to manage 20+ different baits.

Also:

Why haven't we gotten an increased Gig in 30 levels? The relic in ShB was the perfect opportunity to update it.

you mean you don't want a 99 stack of each bait for each sPECIFiC FISH in your inventory?

Of course there's people saying that it's not necessary. Of course there are.

And I mean sure, it isn't, but wouldn't you much rather spend more time playing the game rather than playing an inventory management simulator?

I've wanted that for a long time. My method is just to buy a stack and sell what's left when I'm done with a specific fish. I do keep a few baits that I use, like the butterworms I happen to like for catching ninja bettas, but mostly I sell it off. A tackle bix would be a lot more user friendly and (in my opinion) immersion friendly.

Could also work the blu way : "learn" baits/lures as abilities/stances (from level / quests or from current baits items repurposed)
for "realism" use GP or something like Crafter's Delineation to cast

It's not real life, but it's pretty accurate and therein lies the appeal. You'll only ever go to a spot with only the gear you need. You need to check with a third party to find out the weather in the area.

There are people that make the discoveries for these sites without the aid of other sites, so you're more than welcome to try the same.

The gig doesn't need an upgrade. It's mildly disappointing to not get current materia from extraction, but we're not suffering for having that spot taken up where we used to have nothing.

Again, if you don't want to mess with all the bait, there are alternatives available.

The devs response to this was the chocobo saddlebag. If they restricted it to just storing bait (a horrible idea), players would just turn around and ask for that restriction to be lifted, or ask for additional space.

If you want to hoard bait, then you're going to have to figure out how to manage lugging it around.

Lets pretend the devs posted a user poll for the next time you log in.

If that were a real thing(and lets be clear, its not), are you going to honestly tell me you would pick to add space that can only hold one specific type of thing rather then anything you wanted? I am certain that some small percentage would say yes, but it seems obvious which would be the more effective use of any new space we got.

What I'd really prefer is for XIV to get on the same page as some of their competition and roll out a full wardrobe system (to where you do NOT have to keep the physical item for glams), a material bank, a proper currency tab (anything that is paid to a vendor should go here), and a bait tab. While they're at it, maybe clean up all the crazy item bloat that this game has.

This game has constantly been plagued by poor systems, and maybe it's time for them to really look into an overhaul of whatever is holding them back. Other games have done huge revamps years into their run. Perhaps it's time for Papa SE to invest some of that XIV cash back into the game.

There's no "large medium small" fish. Only normal fish and large (perception/patience).

Between holding bait, And filling up my inventory with fish. It's the main reason I don't fish in the game.

Having a Bait bag would be great.

Just to review:
Freshwater and Saltwater Boilies exist as bait to cover all your fishing needs.

They won't be as precise as other baits, but they save you all that inventory space. The tackle box is a moot point.

SE can conjure up inventory space pretty easily as long as you fork over some $$$. But by that point you might as well rent another retainer. I would be extremely surprised if we ever get more functional inventory space "for free".

Wonder if fishing is bound for another round with the streamlining stick.

Actually they might just be better off by streamlining bait altogether and creating a new bait tab after the crystals tab in your inventory. Instead of 50+ baits in the game they can streamline it down to 20 or less but people wont like that and will say its homonization.

Why have a specific inventory for one specific thing... when you can just have more inventory slots for anything?

Remember when Beast Tribe currencies were items you kept in your inventory? Remember when everyone's Aether Compasses got moved out of our inventories and into Collections? Bait (and Dyes, for that matter) can absolutely get its own inventory.

This would be nice. Could finally go around fishing without having to worry about if I took the right bait with me or not.

Would also be nice if a sizable chunk of bait was just snapped out of existence, too. Far too many types. Would be easier to get a specific handful for each expansion and call it a day. It make it much easier with juggling around bait for certain areas and they don't work because its higher level bait, even though it shoild still technically work in that area regardless.

the player already asked and begged for that in the past. but rather than restricting that space to only bait they wanted to enlarge our normal inventory. but they couldnt do that because of the terrible game code. the solution was the saddlebag... there you have it. this is your bait box

...This is kinda already a thing. Like. I'm heading into catching all StB fish, and it's looking like there's less than 10 baits worth having on hand for the entire expansion.

Starting to think a lot of you are just wildly overestimating how much bait there is. There is a grand total of 92 Fishing Tackle items in the game right now, covering levels 1 to 90. Also keep in mind that some of that is for specific fishing as well, sand fishing, sky fishing, etc. Peel off the ones specifically for Diadem, and Ocean Fishing, also baits not needed elsewhere. Keep in mind ARR is going to seem excessively inflated, but it does cover the widest level range.

You really already do only need to have just a handful of baits for any expansion.
