I think mood drops one level a day?
Sweetfeed raises mood by 1 level, up to Content (level 3)
Greenfeed raises mood by 2 levels, up to Chipper (level 4)
Premium Greenfeed raises mood by 2 levels, up to Gleeful (level 5)
If you want to keep them at max happiness then you need to feed them Premium Greenfeed once a day.
Just to add on to what Espon said, if you feed them food with a lower mood cap than they're currently at, their mood will continue to deteriorate until they reach the cap. Ex: They're Gleeful and you feed them sweetfeed, their mood will continue to go down until they hit Content.
I swear the developers of the game operate on moon logic. >_>
I think requiring multiple feedings to make them suitably happy is a bit excessive, especially when giving them the best feed available. Honestly, I would suggest just assigning a mammet to each animal in one's pasture, making enough feed to last until the sun devours the earth and call it a day. They can handle the rest, and all you have to do is show up every day to collect. It's relatively cheap, even with a full pasture, so long as the workshop always has projects in the pipeline.
I haven't done a precise test of this but I think mood drops every 12 hours. If I feed them 14-15 hours before reset, their mood has dropped a level if I go to collect leavings at reset. If I feel them less than 12 hours before reset, their mood remains at max for reset. I don't use anything other than premium feed once a day (except for the day I caught them, I try to feed them twice if possiible).
I'm sure someone out there has done a detailed test on mood versus feeding time that would have more accurate answers to share.
to add onto this, Greenfeed is the best if you want to maintain a semi-high mood without having to double your cost in veggies (greenfeed costs 2, whereas premium costs 4) and the difference between then is negligible enough because you aren't going to need a metric boatload of animal bits.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that once you unlock the ability to entrust your animals to your mammets, you can mass produce the Greenfeed and be gone for days at a time without issue.
i always feed my animals premium feed for best returns.
I tend to them only once per 24 hours about 8 hours before reset so their mood is is always maxed for leavings. Essentially, when I log on I feed them with premium food and collect leavings right after. There is no need to feed them twice a day to keep their mood up. The garden lets you produce more than enough veggies so it is not harder to feed them with the best food.
I feed them every other day with the tier 2 food and still get 2 items more often than not.
Thinking about feeding them less
Let's keep it simple.
Feed each animal 1 premium greenfeed per day. I do it at around 8-10pm EST. By the time I pick up leavings (which are supposedly snapshotted around 4am EST), they are still gleeful but maybe only 2/3 full. Just 1 per day. Nothing else. By the time I feed them at 8pm, they tend to be chipper still and the premium tops them off to gleeful.
Let's talk cropland by which we feed these 20 animals (which is a little less simple).
1 feed per day for 20 animals, equates to 40 feed per two days. A crop cycle is 2 days. To make the math divide in evenly, let's talk every 6 days. 6 days = 3 crop cycles. 6 days = 120 feed going to the animals. 120 feed is 40 synths. 40 synths requires 160 yield from your crop land. Every plot yields 5 crops per 2 days. To get 160 yield over 6 days, you need to allocate 10 2/3rd plots just to feeding your animals. Make it 11 to keep it simple.
If you give up 11 crop plots to feed your animals 1 premium greenfeed daily, it leaves you with 9 plots for the workshop. Spread out those 9 plots however you want. 1 of each type of remaining seed for the other 9 spots. Or whatever you want. I honestly find that the the cropland items aren't highly valued in the workshop. It is more common that the animal leavings and granary items have the most value, even factoring in popularity and demand.
