Island Sanctuary Expansions and rewards shouldn't use the same currency

It's incredibly unfun that Island Sactuary expansions use the same Seafarer's Cowries (blue) as the content rewards. I wanted to work towards the hairstyles but I'm constantly cockblocked by having to spend the same currency to expand the facilities instead.

Also the Islander's Cowries (green) are useless.

The island is out for how long...not even a week. If you set your workshops up right you can get both hairstyles easily next week in like 4 or 5 days...is that really asked too much? They even work while you are away lol, you just need to set them up and let them do their thing for 5 days.

I make 2k a day + 2k from the challenge log + 500 each day from granary and plants and your animals. There are two haircuts, these need 12k together cause each is 6k.

5 days x 2k cowries = 10k cowries + 2k cowries from challenge log + 3,5k cowries (optional) from your animals/plants/granary = 15,5k cowries

And that is the bare minimum without delving too deep into the stonks, you can make WAY MORE cowries from your workshops especially in the second week when your workshops are leveled up and you build already some of the landmarks.

It’s fine the way it is. I don’t really care for the rewards I just want content to be fun.

They only work 5 days a week and um x to doubt. You could get one in a week.

I don't think the expansions should cost green instead. I think the grainery and caretakers should cost green(island corwies) instead of the blue(seafare) as the green basically aren't worth getting.

Even if this were true, it doesn't change Kit's initial point—especially when you consider Islander's Cowries are entirely worthless. And before someone mentions materia. This is easily the least effective way to grind them. I gathered the new legendary nodes for less than an hour and am swimming in IXs and Xs. Meanwhile, spamming white scrip turn-ins is widely superior. So we essentially have one currencies doing everything and the other doing nothing. Moving rewards over to Islander's Cowries would fix this.

I just wanna touch on that. It takes about 35 minutes to get one grade 10(x) so ya, materia cost is high, but they should add other ways to spend island tokens instead of reducing cost. It's like 585 gathers if you gather two items each time.

I agree, I don't know why they even bother with island coweries, there is nothing bought with them you can't get elsewhere. you should have been able to buy building upgrades with them or something.

I'm reading this over and it's very confusing. You want there to be another currency for some of the shop items, but the one that exists as an alternate to getting the remaining items is bad.

The person just finishing "Endwalker" will likely have a different opinion on Island Coweries.

If the Shop items had a different currency altogether, it wouldn't make a difference. They would still make it so you had to work to earn those items.

Having expansions be linked to green cowries would also force people to dip into their ever-growing stockpiles of materials, which would then encourage/force people to spend more time gathering if they want to be able to keep up with the workshop orders. As it is now, they're pretty useless. :/

Putting on my design hat for a moment... they've said that Island Sanctuary is meant to be added to over time. If you had a special currency that was only needed for expanding the island, but you also obtained this currency by doing stuff on the island, people would hit the current 'end' of the island content and just continue to amass that currency, meaning that when they added new island content in the future people would have already amassed so much currency they'd just be able to instantly upgrade everything. You would either need to have a tightly constrained loop for generating that currency -- to prevent hitting the current 'end' and then just amassing the currency -- or else put a harsh cap on that currency... and let's be honest, people hate caps on in-game currency.

(And I don't imagine using islander cowries for expansion would've been a great deal more popular; in that alternate timeline, you have threads on the forum complaining that it's frustrating that you have to sell your materials to get islander cowries in order to expand your sanctuary but then also need to use those same materials you just got rid of to build things on the areas you just unlocked.)

The currency also serving as what you buy rewards with does not solve the problem, but it certainly lessens it; if people hit rank 10, the currency might not just amass endlessly as they might spend it on rewards. Whereas if the currency for expansion was only used for expansion... by definition, whenever you reached a point where you had nothing to expand, you would stop spending it (and instead continue to amass it)—or you'd have some alternative limiting factor (e.g. trade materials for currency, meaning you can't use the materials to make things to get the blue cowries and the rewards, or whatever) which would probably be equally unpopular, albeit for different reasons.

So while I agree that the blue cowries serving both to unlock expansions and to buy the nifty rewards is annoying, I also can see why it was done from a design standpoint.

(I agree 100% that the green (islander) cowries are statistically indistinguishable from "completely useless" as it presently stands, though.)
