Cone targeting should be character relative.

Trying to find a way to target only the closest enemy in front of me.
Keybind: "Target Closest Enemy" works nicely. but it will target the closest enemy even if it's directly behind you.

I thought the Cone target option in Character Configuration, Target would help, but Target Closest still selects things behind me.
It turns out the cone isn't some sweep angle in front of your character, but your camera view. If you can see it on screen, and it's the closest thing, it gets targeted.

The targeting cone needs to be relative to your character, perhaps 30 degrees (or adjustable in the config)

I prefer it to be able to target behind me on a tank because enemies surround me a lot.

I feel this is how you get everything becoming circular aoes

Targeting should be a lot of things that it clearly isn't. Why are there so many objects/npcs that can be targeted with no point to targeting them?

Or even better? Does not require a target. I don't mind the nuances of targeting however and very much miss them on WAR's old Overpower.

But I’d keep my wish to myself. Because if we know anything about the dev, they’d almost definitely replace it with circles. Gameplay nuances are an abomination in their dictionary, for better or worse.

Targeting in this game is pretty bad in general. I'm not sure exactly how FFXIV manages to do it, but it almost always targets exactly the thing I do not want to target. This is one area where it's a solved problem and they should just copy the logic from other tab target MMOs so it's more consistent.

Also, "Target Closest Enemy" doesn't do what it says. You can notice it really easy in Wolves' Den and the training dummies. Put multiple training dummies on your screen at once. If you do not move at all, but rotate your camera, somehow the "closest enemy" will change. It makes no sense because no distances are changing.

Controller targeting is much better. The target filters don't apply to tab targeting. The controller targeting can be bound to tab and you can check "change target circle to target select", but SE should just make target filters apply to tab targeting.

I'm curious why targeting an enemy behind you is a problem when there's no reason you should be standing with enemies behind you with a cone AoE anyway.

What I find even more annoying is when you tab target and it keeps targeting out of range ennemies. Give me something I can at least hit!

Wait... can you set controller targeting to tab without having a controller? If yes, how? I'm being driven crazy with the tab targeting in this game.

That's right. Go to keybinds, click System and bind "Mouse Cursor/Target Cursor Right" to tab. Go to character configuration, then control settings. Under target, check "Switch target circle to target select" then go to filters and set sheathed and drawn filters. For sheathed I have Enemies and for drawn I have Engaged Enemies.

The problem with it is if you pull multiple packs on a tank then you need to sheath again so you can target a second pack, but it's convenient the rest of the time.

Targeting would need a lot of work overall, it's a real pain in PvP where you basically just use the party bars to click targets when not dealing with the closest enemy because of how clunky tabbing is.

I think some people are confused here.
OP is talking about the targetting option in settings called cone.
Some people in the replies seem to be talking about cone aoes.
Apples and oranges.

And I totally agree, OP, I thought having a new targetting option would finally fix tab-targetting clunkiness but it really didn't. And this keeps being especially a problem in Frontlines, where enemies are a lot and all over the place, and move too much to be easily selectable individually.

Tab cycling through targets on a controller sucks, what are you talking about? Especially on massive pulls.
