Help changing retainer job

My retainer is a lvl 50 (paladin) and I want to change them to a dark knight. I'm currently lvl 67 dk. I purchased "modern vocation" from the vocate, but no option to change my retainer's job pops up when I summon my retainer. What do I do?

Is the retainer currently on a venture? You cannot switch their class/Job or change their gear if they're currently on a venture, even if they have completed one but they haven't yet finalized it with you (in other words, turned over what they found and gained the EXP for it).

No, they had just completed one, and I received the loot for it. I also tried unequipping all gear and moving them to the current city I was at.

Afair, you don't do it at the retainer, you go to one of the managers where you also go to make a new retainer.

When I go to a vocate npc, they tell me to purchase the "modern vocation" from them, which I did, and then summon a retainer.

Once you've assigned retainer a job you cannot swap it without fully resetting their level back to 1 and leveling again. This can be done in the retainer menu, when they aren't on a venture and after you unequip all their gear.

But I never assigned my retainer to paladin to begin with. It was gladiator, turned paladin automatically at 50. And the vocate says the retainer has to be level 50 in order to change jobs to dk.

Sorry, but you're remembering incorrectly. You had to pay 40 ventures to convert gladiator into paladin, it's not automatic.

Unfortunately once it has a job you can't change it to another job. If you want it to be a Dark Knight then you need to reset it back to level 1.

To make a gladiator into dark knight you have to level it to 50, then switch. Because Dark Knight doesn't have a base class, any battle class works for this, as long as you don't give it a job, then when it gets to 50, switch to Dark Knight.

Oh you're probably right. The reason I don't remember is it must have been years ago when I did it. I only recently came back to the game and just got retainer to 50, but assumed it was a gladiator the whole time. Appreciate the help, this makes sense now.

Although it's far from ideal, it might be worth considering purchasing "One Retainers Journey III" on the Mogstation. It'll skip the newly reset retainer to level 80 at whatever their current class is (assuming you have that levelled to 80 too).

Because they sell that is probably why SE hasn't updated the retainer system, but it will save you a month of time, if not more.

I'll keep that in mind, but it doesn't bother me. I'm in the leveling process anyway, just past heavensward, and my retainers are leveling real quickly. I reset my 2nd retainer only about a week ago and its lvl 31 already.

Heh.. My other account, the retainers are 60 with no job because I'm unsure you could assign jobs then.

I never knew that retainer boosts were a thing. One of my biggest annoyances with retainers has always been that you don't retain your level when you switch to something else. I was holding out hope that they'd add that as a QoL update at some point, but now that I know they actually make money from it, I doubt it'll ever be a thing. Sad times.
