Tomestone weekly cap?

I'll hit the Astronomy tomestone weekly cap tomorrow (5 more). What's the purpose of this limit? All it seems to do is limit time played. If I run a lot of hunt trains, I can reach 450 in 2-3 days.
(I won't have much reason to log on until next Tuesday after I've collected 450.)

It’s literally just a time gate so you can’t gear all your jobs too fast.

A timegate. At least it's not a set of weekly quests. Now if you excuse me, that book won't finish itself! lol

It encourages people to run Savage as well to gear I guess

Because the gear you can buy is equivalent to what's available in Savage, it would be wrong to allow you to just casually farm it up while other people work through harder content.

Yeah, that's basically it. It's a time gate mechanism, just like weekly lock outs for raids. The idea is to make it so you can't log in and "complete" gearing up everything in a week and then unsub until the next major patch. It also sets a reasonable "speed limit" to ensure that a majority of the community doesn't fall behind the "hardcore" playerbase.


Personally, I enjoy it because it makes me feel like I'm actually keeping up despite being a casual player. HOWEVER, I think that gearing up alternate jobs should be much easier than it is. Like, the first piece of gear that you purchase with the limited tomestones would "unlock" that type of gear for purchase with non-capped Tomestones.

e.g., I purchase a chest piece for my healer with Astronomy tomes; Now I can buy Maiming, Fending, Aiming, Casting, and Striking with Aphorism tomestones. It continues to limit everyone's main job so nobody flies ahead, but makes it so I don't have to pick 2-3 jobs to seriously gear up.

It effectively means you can only get one piece of gear a week. If you could get it all at once, you wouldn't need to login once a week, you would only need to login for the first week and then not login for months until the next patch. The effect of that is people who do the content late in the weeks after have less people to queue with.

tomestone cap should be 900 baseline

then when the raid gets unlocked it should become unlimited

they should also halve the cost of buying gear with books

theres too many damn jobs to timegate people in 2022

All it really does is lock your alt jobs out from obtaining BiS until a raid tier is dead and irrelevant.

Because people doing HaRdEr content are doing it for the gear. Please.

It's just a timegate to keep you logging on. It's a bit pointless though. A lot of the time you can just buy crafted gear which is mostly the same.

People fuss about it, but then if you ask them about what they do, it's never anything that actually requires it.

It is a treadmill to keep you subbed. However, the other way I see it... it promotes healthier game play. By limiting the player to 450 per week, it allows for the players that just want to run expert five times per week to be on the same level playing field as the player that wants to run 450 worth of weekly tomes on Tuesdays.

Healthier to provide options. Also healthier to encourage players to try other content. 24-man for a tomestone-equivalent piece (albeit, not upgradeable) and savage content, if that's their prerogative.

Yeah? Why do you think weekly reclears are a thing? Not to say people aren't doing it because it's fun (they are) but people run Savage to gear jobs, especially after they've gotten BiS for their main.

In a game with vertical gear progression, I think it is safe to say that people do indeed do harder content for the gear. Maybe not just for the gear, but that is definitely part of it.

Savage got uncapped this week so why didn't they up it to 900 like they usually do?

That raise only happen when next expansion is about to be release.

Anyway is just a way to keep players sub and to encourage to do other content in order to gear more classes is jut want.

It doesn't really matter at this point. For those taking this route, there's new crafted gear coming that will be better.
They're also going to be lifting the cap once the new currency comes out.

Even if they didn't, the current crafted gear is the same ilvl, even if it's not as good.

And crafted gear is incredibly cheap this time around. I remember during ShB it was a bit pricey? Not to mention it's even cheaper than buying a full set of crafted gear normally because of the Rain Shop and the certificates. Instead of buying a full set of gear you just buy whatever gives the most certificates for the amount of gold you spend and you turn those items in, then rebuy the augmented classical stuff for it.

I don't really know where they were going with that.

Weekly caps exist to keep people from running 100 dungeons and a dozen raids on patch day and then spending the next 4 months complaining that there's nothing to do.

Crafted gear and how it can be upgrade to 590 invalidate a lot of gear progression and it's kind of a problem in a way. (If you care about that of course)

its definitely a timegate but it's both positive and negative. MMO players are OCD grinders if the cap was 1800 then people would feel they NEEDED to get 1800 per week to "keep up". So yes it does restrict you in terms of how fast you can gear classes but it also says "you're done for the week go do some other fun stuff". I do dislike the odd numbers which means sometimes you can skip a week without being able to afford something, they should iron out these mathematical inconsistencies.

Upgrading crafted gear comes in the odd number patches which are generally catch up patches. We will get new crafted in 6.2 then the ability to upgrade it in 6.3, along with an easier way to upgrade the tome gear, 24 man raid which has gear at the base tome/ upgraded crafted gear, so its not really an issue.

I wish they removed it now since the weekly cap on Savage loot is gone.

Apparently it's super duper hard too because today I've spent the entire day trying to farm to gear alts and I've had to go through 8 '' farm '' groups to even get a single P1S kill...
I don't even want to think about P4S and how many I went through there...

I used to care about it.

I started in ShB and I started maybe half way through it? I wanted to sort of gear up naturally through my weekly tome limit and through the regular tomestone gear which isn't as good but a lot of people got on my case about not just buying crafted gear(which was at the time super expensive).

Doesn't really bother me any more cause the novelty has worn off but still...

Not gonna lie I do find the complete non-chalance to be quite infuriating.
I don't like having my time wasted repeatedly and then have people be all '' uwu '' about it, I've seen so many PF descriptions too with '' help me kill so I can start farm ''...
It really can make me hate people at times when I have long streaks of this.

I wish we had another requirement like '' need to have killed the boss X amount of times ''.
I still think there would be problems but it'd probably cut down A LOT on the frustration.

Incorrect:

Current crafted is the same ilvl as regular radiant. However, that's as far as it goes. Radiant can be upgraded to 600. Savage raiders get dibs on the upgrade items while we wait on the next alliance raid coin drops
They also get the Asphodelos coffers which are automatically 600.
Crafted is always at least 10 ilvl behind the max possible gain from Savage raiding.

Im still trying to figure out why is poetics still capped at 2,000 after 4 xpacs. it should be at like 20,000 minimum at this point.

So you never have enough if they happen to add something you need/want. That way you are forced to do roulettes, or whatever content you prefer, to get those.

Catching up to what exactly? Also, next patch crafted gear is pretty much a full reset that invalidate almost everything else.

The only items they add are relic materials. Perhaps that's enough for them to keep it where it is.

The REAL problem is that, ever since Eureka, the UNCAPPED tomestones have had zero use outside of week 1-2 of a new expansion.
I legit hope Godbert is gonna want a ton to give us the Manderville weapons.

And what about those slower players who are only now near the end in EW? The cap will disrupt them severely from progression (and they are definitely not OCD grinders!). Timegating these players is something you shouldnt want to do.

That would be the case if Tomestones were the only source of the gear. As it stands the would be raider also can get the gear from crafters and the top end gear from current Savage as well as the limit have been removed in preparation for next tier. And even then that progression matters little for someone that's not interested in high end content as the MSQ requirements are much lower

It's a timegate that will be rendered a complete waste of time when the next patch drops with crafted gear.

Honestly I'm fine with the cap, I just think it needs to be more alt-job friendly.

For example, a few months into a raid tier they could easily half the price of capped tome gear and allow you to buy repeat pieces with the uncapped tomes for alt jobs once you've already bought a piece (so for example if you bought a 590 tome chest for your main, any other job can buy the 590 chest with uncapped tomes).

It doesn't keep me subbed at all. I just didn't bother gearing alt jobs this patch further than basic crafted gear.

For non crafters this can be very expensive gil wise (dont expect those people to be rich). And forcing them to become a crafter is just equal to forcing them to grind. Crafting is sadly not a good workaround in this case. Still, if they would go for highest difficulty duties, then they most likely would find a dedicated group that can craft the stuff for them anyway (and relatively cheap). Negating the issue for the most dedicated at least.

But there is the difficulty lower where the higher gear still helps a lot at, having the minimum requirement or the maximum available will matter. Mainly because balance is often decided to either force damage of a certain treshold (forcing players to live at the edge of survivability to make it more intense and force more healing etc), and gear can make you capable of surviving potentialy another hit by having that slight margin (preventing the need for overhealing). But still, its most likely down to skill at that point anyway, so probably i think it matters more than it realy does (most mechanics probably instakill at such difficulty levels).

Especially when you realize they have no problem upping it from 450 > 900 later in the expansion cycle. It's a timegate pure and simple, something to keep sub money coming in.

I've always thought of it as more of an 'equalizer' rather than a gate. Different players have different schedules. Weekly progression for some becomes impossible for others if the tomestones are uncapped, as the possibility of finding other players for content decreases once all the gear desired has been purchased.
