Open letter to Square Enix and Yoshi P

Hello Square Enix and community,

Today I am taking the time to write this open letter to Square Enix and Yoshi P in order to see if they can take some more precise long term measures than they have been taking so far regarding the alarming prevalence of homophobia and transphobia in the game.

My suggestion at least in the short term while developing machine learning algorithms to detect homophobia and transphobia automatically, is that they should announce the measures they are taking against homophobia and transphobia.

What would this mean in practice?

Initially the idea is to have multiple announcements and statements on FF14’s social networks regarding the measures of a permanent account suspension of users who engage with harassment of trans and queer folks and go weekly or monthly giving reports of the amount of players permanently suspended for such their bigotry.

Within the game before logging into the game, a pop-up message should appear stating that anyone who harasses others on the basis of gender identity, race, or sexuality will be permanently suspended.

This with the colors and in the specific way that is well known to instill some fear to generate crisis among the bigoted alt-right playerbase and at least would be a start in the short term considering that the last few years the ToS has been simply useless in combatting bigotry in the game and on the forums.

You can banned for less in this game, it's not bigotry SE will and have slacked on.

Ironically, it's because the ToS vague at times that it has been "effective".

I've heard/read more toxicity and hatred towards others from the lgbtq people in voice chats and guild chats in games than I ever have from anyone else, so hey as long as you are for equality of punishment then by all means lets go all in on your dystopian machine learning so we can make chat in the game even more quiet because people can't handle words.

Exactly. Nowadays people cannot even stand to see others having a totally different opinion than them and would shame you for it.

Is there really that much homophobia/transphobia in the game? That seems to be the only subject you talk about and yet I haven't been seeing it. And discord doesn't count.

There is. The outrage today directed at an RP venue, which not coincidentally also are welcoming of queer and indeed have queer representation, reveals the full extent of the bigotry that lies in this community.

If trouble seems to follow one around relentlessly, the best thing to do is to step back and take a look at one's self. Running into this much negativity - as you seem to do, OP, since you are constantly reporting on it - isn't normal or healthy and doesn't happen to most people.

Does it happen to some reasonable people some of the time? Yeah.

Does it happen to some reasonable people all of the time, or even frequently? Nope.

Examine your own behavior. Perhaps you should avoid discussing sexuality and gender identity in-game, and switch to a support group or something. This really isn't the place for it anyway. I've never felt the need to bring my sexuality and gender identity into the game (whatever that may be; it's irrelevant no matter what it is, anyway).

Healthy, normal, happy humans want to be accepted for being human first. Not sexuality/gender first, and human second. That's a whacked out way to socialize. If you actually would rather be accepted for something sexual or gender-related before being accepted for you the human... well... I've already given my opinion on getting real-world help with your mental health.

To put a sharper point on that, if you are in need of discussion of sexuality and gender identity, you've made an extremely poor choice of where to do so. There are plenty of places online where you can enter into discussion about these facets of your life, along with other people who are visiting the same (site, group, whatever) as yourself. There's also therapy, which you should avail yourself of, if you find yourself frequently angered, frustrated or depressed when discussing sexuality and gender.

Expecting any kind of reasonable, level-headed, informed discussion here is fairly silly. This is a video game for teens, after all. No offense, but you might want to really take that support group advice to heart. Do it online if you have social anxiety.

If you go to the playground to discuss deep issues, common sense says someone's gonna throw stuff at you. Obviously, yeah? And further, there's never going to be a point in either of our lives when bullies and sociopaths don't want to act the fool. They will always be there; to try to teach all of them how life works is futile and a fairly unsound endeavor. You need to take this stuff in stride, instead of getting bogged down with it and obsessing over how other people think and act.

I hope you do feel better one day, Ativan, 'cause these folks you are constantly trying to build walls around - they're never going away, and this incessant discomfort you feel in FF isn't healthy. But, you know this, I have no doubt. In fact, I am positive you know that getting some more robust verbiage communicated to players about how to behave won't change a thing. At least not as far as how you feel inside.
