An in-game UI that let you try on every piece of glam and how to get them

First and foremost, I don't talk about how "get the glam and they will be with you forever". It would be cool, but it seems not working with FF14 for developers' reasons.


What I mean is an UI that will show you all the gear in-game and how to get them. More importantly, you can try them on too. Think of Dream Fitting function at the Inn that let you try out store-bought item, but this UI will expand to non-store bought games too.


So, let's say I want a leg-piece that fit my glam idea, I open the UI, and use Try On every leg-piece that the game offers. Prefer to have a filter on gear categories and contents they come from (raid/dungeon/crafting/hunting...). Then I see the leg piece I want, I read where I can get it. Perhaps excluding store-bought items cuz you have Dream Fitting for it already.



I think it will be helpful for glam dresser to get the piece they want without having to run every where to try on NPCs' item list, or resort 3rd-party plugins.

What does that have to do at all with what OP said?

That would be cool, specifically if it doesn't flaunt cash shop as well. This by the way would be a fantastic segue into a wardrobe (GW2) / transmog log (WoW) system.

It is actually somewhat related. Yoshi P said that making a list of showing all existing things would also include things that are not available anymore/are cash shop only/come from codes with statues etc. and it would annoy many people to have a list that they can never fill :p Yes they could just make everything available again but there are things like 1.0 stuff etc that probably will never come back

That's the opposite of what is being asked. The list of cash shop glamours already exists; OP is asking for a list of things that can be acquired in game.

Additionally, the phrasing in your quote as a "list they can never fill" indicates that the statement would have been regarding a checklist of things to collect, not a simple preview of everything.

There will likely never be a one-stop-shop option. That's just too much info to be handled at once. This is why dream fitting exists as it does, within the confines of the inn room. This is why we have youtube channels like this one. All this info is available outside the game already.

Not every player is this much into glam and those that are have little trouble venturing out to find what works. It's not a necessity and people get by just fine without it. Dream Fitting is the exception because you want to be sure you'll be happy with an outfit before you put down real money on it.

I mean if you think about the Marketboard, that has a list of lots of equipment to try on, and not too long ago we had the Rowena representatives added in each city with a list of trial/raid/tomes etc gear. So I don't think a single medium containing everything, even if just for viewing purposes, is impossible. Though such a thing probably is not a priority at the moment, even if it was considered.

So why can't we have other similar searches in the confines of the inn room?

Even if they can't handle everything, viewable dungeon and alliance raid gear would be a massive help.

But, but, that'd be like WoW.

Appearances automatically added to your catalog? Information on where to acquire all collectables, including appearances? Intuitive one-click controls for said catalog for trying things on?

Nay, I say. Nay.

/s Yes, better handling of glamour acquisition, browsing, and application in this game would be greatly appreciated, ideally above and beyond competitors.

Yep. Those are the two areas lacking in accessibility. I don't know about dungeons, but I could see them adding some kind of vendor to the respective alliance quest zones to pick up gear after one has cleared and the content isn't as relevant. Dungeons are easily farmed and people running them helps the newer people more.

While we're at it, can we also have this for retainers? It's a pain in the ass to dress female retainers on a male character or male retainers on a female character, since you can't preview how a glamour piece will look on them before you buy or craft it.

That's even less likely to happen. You may as well use one of those websites. Every piece of glam is catalogued somewhere. You could also make an alt to look at stuff on the market.

He also said that if they made a list, people would feel compelled to "complete the list" and this could put some unnecessary weight on their shoulders.

I prefer to look for this type of listing content on websites, as we see in other games. Too much information within the game can be overwhelming, especially for beginners.

We already discussed this further up the thread. The phrasing "complete the list" indicates that they're talking about the concept of a checklist that marks off which pieces you have. Dreamfitting doesn't do that – it's just a list of everything you can get, without any tracking of what you own.

I'd like it actually. Because most of the time you can only try out items on MB since they're preview-able at all times.
However there are good sets from dungeon that you will most likely miss out on since you don't know they exist.

What's the difference from this and achievements....? I disagree with this logic (which I know you are saying is Yoshida's logic). Some achievements are more annoying to obtain than most of all the hard to get gear (speaking of the late tier ones at least). For mog shop or FOMO gear (which they shouldn't do) they can simply not show it if you don't own it. Exception for perhaps ultimate, which could have similar rules (perhaps a blank section that displays what you've earned).

If they don't want to compell lists that are difficult then much of the achievement log needs to go.

Of course a complete dream log is a bit different than the above, but I just wanted to note I don't really get the logic for being against completionist lists when we have an achievement system with some frankly crazy numbers to some of them.

Unless Yoshida is also against that, and it's too late lol.

I would like this. I think they can manage to do it in a way that doesn't emphasize cash shop items since that's a concern they've expressed.

I've also long wanted something that's sort of related to this, but not restricted to glamour, which is just linking of all items in the game to their sources. I'm sure this is not an easy feat given how old FFXIV is at this point, but it's something basically every live service or gacha game does, where the item description tells you where it can currently be found within the game. It would be useful for glamour, like when someone else has something on and you want to know where it comes from, but I primarily want it because I despise the menus for all the "endgame exchange" NPCs.

Definitely. I had an idea based off an akin system via a crystal library / forge. Where you could transmute content from a space into materia (of the given space) and then use it to purchase the glamour catalog, then further items, and also perhaps relates to crafts or relics.

For example you earn 7 axes, 3 staves, and 4 books from ifrit and turn them into ifrit materia (14), the content has 10 weapons (no I am not trying to count out all the jobs, just give a rough example). By spending the 14 materia you unlock ALL the glamour form that content, they take up no slots- they're just unlocked. Now that you unlocked them you can now also spend 2 materia to purchase the weapon of your choice (meaning you could get 2 staves and come out with 1 katana). Transmuting can be done to bound and non-bound weapons, so you can use the weapon and once you no longer need it for stats on your main you can also transmute it (to meet the unlock demand or to use it in purchasing another weapon).

These materia can also be traded for GC seals, sold to npc, crafted (as mentioned), and desynthized - allowing you to save space in your inventory if you're doing long farms.

The benefit of a system being 1 variable (yes / no) stores an entire content, so like a raid, or a dungeon with 20+ unique items is now 1 yes / no. Which given the apparent memory issues FFXIV has, might be a function compromise that also allows players in built safety nets to pretty much all content.

Of course a proper log would be nice though... One that tells you where it comes from, and if you have that specific item. The bonus here in this system though is if you're unlucky and can never seem to get that 'whm chest piece' to drop, it doesn't actually matter.. you just need content. Can adjust the ratio, unlock phase, and use HQ / LQ to add greater power (like a weapon might give HQ, and the content needs X LQ and Y HQ materia).


Just wanting to say I don't agree with the idea that it will compel people to collect stuff any worse than achievements compel people, and if that's bad then SE should consider making their achievements more friendly. As I see some achievements that are pretty crazy. I respect the concern if it's from Cash Shop or something FOMO-ish... but I feel the list of items that meet that are like.. what.. sub 200? We could voluntarily make that list for SE lol. It would be boring work sure, but that is a totally do-able list to make and then easily maintained once the foresight of needing to maintain the list is known (so these do not show up in the log unless you already have them).

It's a pitty they ditched the item log idea a long time ago, they originally said they were working on an item log with lore on them too (this was a request by myself and some others)... that would have been insanely cool glamour log but unfortunately was determined too much effort / not-practical for the server (I definitely believe it would be a lot of work, given each item needing to have localization.... and the system itself is hard as it even took Blizzard multiple years of dedicated resources.. but damn that would have been cool).

All that still requires the irritating hoops of checking one's retainers for each item in the set you want, making inventory room for what's left, going to the obscure vendor, buying what pieces you're missing, then going to an inn room, making room in the glamour dresser, and spending X glamour prisms, all just to get what would be automatic upon initial item acquisition in other games...

A best of most worlds system would be to...

• Trim appearance data from the items themselves. That saves a fair bit of information per item.
• Introduce a simple 0|1 index --or an expands-as-needed one like Key Items-- for each collected appearance. As soon as you spiritbind a piece of gear, its appearance is collected forever.
• Move everything in the Glamour Dresser to the above Appearance Collection. Send the stuff therein to the Salvage Collector. The Glamour Dresser's data is no longer required; remove them. This, too, saves a fair bit of requisite information.
• Appearance and color data is now by-slot and by-job. Changing out one's gear in a given slot has no impact on appearance already set atop said gear via the Glamour Plate. One can still, of course, leave slots empty to then check and inherit the same appearance as indexed by the gear in the given slot.
• The appearance 0|1 index sources a new Glamour Collection pane, from which one can Try On any and all gear, filterable by whether it's already been collected, by job, by level, etc.
• Glamour Prisms are used only to adjust n number of slots in a given Glamour Plate.
• There is one extra "current" plate for each job. You can select however many slots from any given other Glamour Plates to apply to the jobs' held state / current plate.
• Leveling items the appearances of which differ only in color (such as a brown or green Striking or Scouting set, respectively, with all the same shape, trim, features, and highlights) will be consolidated, simply made immediately dyable (with the expansion-later crafted versions just offering alternate highlights/trims) to save some extra data and accelerate glamour acquisition.

And with that, there's no need to horde items for appearance, reapply glamours as you upgrade a given piece of gear, etc., and one can now mix and match Plates as they like.
