This needs to be done! :D
no FF support on that site ? xD
Probably should just wait for 2.0 to pressure them into that.
Technically the site itself supports the game right now but the in-game client doesn't. No point adding support to it til 2.0 since the net code will be changed then anyways
People here hate on Steam but this is okay...?
If you launch the game with steam you certainly do have access to an in-game browser. Also, imo, mumble is the only voice chat client you need. It the best for multiple reasons.
None of what that client offers is truly needed. Especially in my case, as I use phpbb3 for the Abaddon site, not that Enjin crap that everyone else uses.
There is nothing that client does that Steam hasn't already been doing for the last 4-5 years.
hmm...never noticed the browser in steam before. Only ever used it as a screenshot tool before it was possible to actually take screenshots. I stopped afterwards cause the only way to get it working was to launch the game from within steam. I'll take my skype/msn messenger/teamspeak/gmail support over steam though...Ironically it has steam and xfire support too
I mean I don't care which tools people use either way.
I just think this topic in general is very hypocritical of the FFXIV community, because every time I've seen Steam brought up in the past here, people shat all over it for one reason or another. And this is quite literally the same thing.
Calm down there turbo. Just because some people like Enjin over Steam doesn't mean the community is being hypocritical. It's called personal preference. Perhaps what your so upset about is that their personal preference isn't the same as yours. If it helps any, I have FFXIV set to launch through Steam. However I never launch it that way because I play windowed so there really is no need to.
Well in my case it's a matter of convience. My linkshell's website is hosted on enjin so being able to access it with the in game client would be easier plus I'm on skype almost 24/7. At the moment there's no reason to use either enjin or steam since you pretty much can't function with the game in fullscreen mode
Guildwork > Enjin
I hate the idea of incorporating an external resource to games in general, Steam included. It's unnecessary, inconvenient and a nuisance. And lets not forget, this game is going on the PS3. Having that functionality is impossible on the console so PC players would have an advantage over console players, something Square avoided like the plague in XI until recent years when PS2 support became problematic due to expanding content. Don't want, don't need. You can already run XIV windowed, what more could you possibly need?
The point is this'd be akin to XI's Windower. Functionality that the game wasn't designed for and was only available on the PC. Sure, you can play XI in Windowed mode now but it's still nothing like Windower, which can still get you banned if you use it. Incorporating a PC-only element into a PC and Console game gives an unfair advantage to the PC user. "Oh, but who'd use the PS3 version, it's only going to suck and drag the game down." Well, I'm playing on an ASUS G53SX gaming laptop and it can't handle XIV at max nor near max settings. That purchase represented more than a fair bit of my discretionary funds... not everyone has the cash to do that making the PS3 version much more accessible. You'd have them do without just so you can surf the web, chat and who knows what else while in fullscreen?
Would it not be better to have the 'needed' features that this tool offers, as a built-in well-integrated offering from SE themselves, designed to better leverage the look&feel & needs of the game?
- Built-in Mailbox to Chat with Friends
- Built-in access to LodeStone
- Integrated 'Private Company' message board
The rest of the 'features' do not seem that valuable:
Direct ScreenShot/VideoCapture TO site. You can already do this, you are just saved an extra step of uploading it to Enjin. Might be convenient, but not really all that powerful.
TS/etc, everyone is already doing this, so no need to change anything here. Plus, Yoshi already said he did not want to support built-in voice chatting.
The built-in mailbox is already announced and planned to occur
I'm hoping the 'Private Company' would be able to add integrated support for the other two features.
I do not see why SE can't have built-in support for a web browser to LodeStone (the PS3 can do this, so therefore SE can integrate it if they wish).
No need for third-party add-ons, which will make some people happy.
Well since FFXIV will support flash based addons I don't see why one (or more) of those addons could do what the community wants.
I can actually get behind that kind of in-house in-game functionality. You wouldn't have to worry so much about the potential security risks involved and would probably be more console-friendly, thus allowing console players the ability to have that same functionality.
PC players are always going to have access to more then PS3 users and full screen vs windowed is not an issue it is now just a preference. SE gave up the excuse of not wanting people to have easy access to 3rd party tools when they allowed windowed mode. I'm also under the impression that SE not allowing alt+tab in full screen was an oversight and they used the excuse of not allowing easy access to 3rd party programs to cover their ass for poor coding. SE also can no longer use said excuse when they are planing to allow add-ons in the near future.
Also I have never played in full screen and I have no wish to, I just think this is a cool feature and would be nice to have, I could give two shits and a fuck about the PS3 crowd they give up the right to additional features by playing on PS3 exclusively and they know this.
Besides this client isn't giving PC users access to anything we dont already have access to, its just allowing more convenient access to it. And dont give me that shit about your laptop not being able to handle it, I run a a 2.6 core 2 duo quad, 9800 GTX+, 8 gig DDR2 machine and it handles just fine.
PS3 players always have the option of using their phone/computer/laptop/ipad/whatever while they're on the PS3. I don't know a single person that has a PS3 and not at least two of the other devices listed.
Yup... I plan on using the PS3 with my laptop next to me on Ventrilo or Mumble or whatever, which would allow me to chat under other conditions and not just in-game. In-game only voice chat is mostly redundant anyway, look at how most people on XBox Live tend to party with their friends and either play together or cross-game chat rather than use the normal in-game voice chat.
For what it's worth, I love steam, always have. =)
I support this, more options = better for players.
