Just an idea; what if "Apartments" were all moved to a sort of "Cruise Ship"?

I don't know why, but this idea crossed my mind the other day, and for some reason I kind of latched onto it.

Right now, Apartments... well, kind of suck. They're extremely limited, you can't see them, and largely serve as a "cheap teleport to an area". (it also seems kind of weird you can own a House AND an Apartment)

They're still a great way to engage with the concept of "decorating a house", but like I said, they're quite limited.

But I got to wondering -- what if they added something like a giant "Cruise Ship"?

I sort of envision it something like a GIANT ship, floating on the sea, maybe small islands passing by in the distance? Or even just having it anchored at a dock somewhere.

So instead of having an NPC in each housing district, in each ward, that provides a list of apartments to teleport to...

...You teleport to this "cruise ship", and ALL of the apartments have their own little door that you can access, just like renting a room on a cruise ship (or so I assume; I've yet to actually go on a cruise).

My thinking is this:

The Devs clearly have to be very mindful of server space and how much data is being taken up. "Apartments" probably take up minimal data comparatively. But they're also not very "cool", as a concept. But if your "apartment" were on something like a cruise ship, complete with its own separate entrance? I don't imagine that would take up any more server space than the current system (since apartments THEMSELVES are completely untouched), but I could see them being a LOT more enviable to players.

Again, just an idea that crossed my mind!

having an apartment on a cruise ship is like taking a small crap in my rice bowl instead of a huge crap, and pretending that you did me a favor. The volume is small, but it's still there... steaming... staining my Tupperware bowl.

Can I control the ship and visit isles as if I'm playing Sea of thieves? If yes, you got my support. If no, then you get a nah.

This idea would just be another form of "wards", since the point of apartments is to create instanced housing that doesn't need to be connected by a larger centralized neighborhood instance. So in effect anything like this would just obviate the point of apartments in general.

They should just improve apartments so you can upgrade them to med and large sizes, while making outdoor furniture usable indoors and you basically have personal housing far more folks would pleased to have...

Or we just get apartments that can have resize options.

I think we're past the point of alternatives. Accept no substitutions. Give us expanding apartments or nothing.

I hope its nothing then. Being able to just turn apartments into Large size plots would mostly eliminate the point of large size plots, with no downsides. They're 'supposed' to be worse than actual housing.

That just seems like a lot of resources to code to do EXACTLY what the apartments do now.

Or maybe just do actual instanced housing, you know with front yards and everything.

Going from apartment size to cabin size doesn't sound glorious. If the rooms were same as apartments they wouldn't make sense on a cruise ship. The ship would be at the bottom of the ocean.

What would this accomplish exactly?

We need to expand and improve upon apartments, not offer a new wards worth of them.

Instanced large apartments don't invalidate physical large houses because the value is entirely on the player. Now it's no secret that there's quite a substantial amount of players who already own large plots that the exclusionary nature of the current housing system makes them feel good and they want to keep it that way. Some want the neighborhood feel and some want both.

Contrary to popular belief, expanded instanced housing doesn't take anything out of those two things. If you value house rarity through exclusion, it's still there. Me owning an apartment that has 2 extra rooms is still not a physical house. If you value neighborfeel, your next door homeowner isn't going to suddenly vacate his or her own place just because my instanced apartment can now have the same inside dimensions as large.

Expanding apartments still means that:
-I can't decorate the outside
-I can't garden outside.
-I still have to set it to public or private, just like a physical house
-The actual gil value is always going to be lower than any physical house.

And those are just the differences that I can think of off the top of my head. So, if SE considerd alternatives like OP's idea, then I'm in the agreement the we should get nothing. Otherwise, give us expanding apartments.

There are no cruise ships but what they can sell are different sized islands on the Sea of Clouds.

You know, I'd forgotten this idea entirely, but actually I think it would be a cool idea. Even just as a new "housing area". Instead of talking to an NPC that just ports you to an apartment that exists *somewhere*, actually having those doors you could go to yourself.

Obviously they'd still be instances, but I think it would feel a lot more immersive. Not to mention, it would be cool having a special place for Apartments, to maybe encourage a little more social interaction.
