A Note of Encouragement to the Devs, and Thoughts

I was reading some comments that made me sick to my stomach. Seeing people personally insult and attack the real, human beings who are pouring their time and energy into making this game for us really rubbed me the wrong way. As such, I wanted to leave a bit of encouragement.

I'm sure the devs don't check the English forums, but maybe someone in the community management team will at least see this:

To the programmers, artists, community managers, and everyone else who's worked on FF14: Thank you all so much for the the time and effort you've poured into this game. I, along with my friends and family who play this game, greatly appreciate everything the team has done to provide such a great experience for us. The long hours and weekends that you've had to endure for our sake has not gone unnoticed. We understand when problems arise: we're all human. As a software developer and player, I'm very grateful for the transparency the team has provided to the community on recent matters.

We're cheering you guys on. Please keep doing your best!

Frustration and disappointment are understandable! If you've simply been voicing your dissatisfaction with the situation, that's perfectly fine.

I've been playing this game since 2014, and this was the first time ever that I had a real opportunity to buy a house -- and it was a guarantee, too! But I was met with the big fat "0". It was disappointing, but life goes on!

What I was more concerned with was the reality that a lot of good, hard-working SE employees were having a very rough weekend. I can only imagine what internal finger pointing and arguments have been taking place, and what incredible stress is being put on this team who just wants to make something fun for all of us. The last thing they need is me berating them, accusing them of being "incompetent, lazy developers" and acting like I somehow know more than they do about the situation.

I've seen first hand what it looks like when a company as big as SE has a weekend emergency. I've watched the life drain from the eyes of my own friends as they sat there on call at unholy hours of the morning trying to pinpoint and resolve issues like these.

I will not be reading or replying to any comments.
I really have no care to read what's said in response to this, about me or the devs.

I admire the sentiment, but if this is them pouring their time and energy into the game I am quite worried. I am tired of housing being some unachievable goal. I am tired of the devs having housing be shit ever since it was introduced. Iam sure the artists, graphic designers, whatever are trying their best, It can't be an easy job. But if the people in charge of housing were replaced by monkeys overnight, will there be a difference? I don't think so.

Life goes on i suppose. Housing in ffxiv will just be crap forever. 10 years and the experience is still rubbish. While the recent outrage is clearly triggered by the lottery debacle, it has for me at the very least made me realise housing is just fucked to its core. Maybe they'll fix it in the next 10 years? kek

Being polite about it for 10 years, not much has changed. Being abusive about it for 10 years, not much has changed. I think its pretty clear ffxiv just has a shit housing team. Club penguin had better housing. Now that is worrying.

Fun fact, i've been reading this forum the last days and i didnt see anyone INSULTING devs
If saying that the quality of the game is bad is an insult, so i'm sorry by that, maybe we are saying that because we pay for the game

Anyway, although all the problems with the house system and the terrible balancing of the PVP, the new 24 raid is in the top tier of the raids in the whole game, the MSQ was nice and the soundtrack is amazing as always.

We are criticizing aspects of the game that we've sought changes for for years - the people who've just plainly insulted the devs get checked by others & told to calm tf down

Yet another person who cannot read the room. Almost no one is condoning insulting the devs in this forum and the sole one I have seen insulting them has been summarily banned or something, they've kinda dropped of the face of the forum after creating a thread and then revealing their own hypocrisy shortly thereafter. The devs are all grown adults who do not need you to soften the blow for them. If they honestly cannot see how people would be upset or angry with them with the recent patch then I think that illustrates a clear disconnect between them and their audience. If this is not a huge wake up call for them it can only get worse. I'm sorry but they need to take to heart that what they've put out is simply inexcusable and if that hurts, well maybe they'll get it and do better.

I've always been curious about this take that "they're full grown adults, they don't need your help" when reality presents countless examples of full grown adults needing help both physically and psychologically.

Far as I see it you can be frustrated with the various issues that have popped up from the 6.1 patch, but if you can't keep it constructive and civil you're just trying to be cruel because you feel other people who weren't bothered should feel angry with you. This wasn't an intentional sleight against the players, it was an honest mistake in development for the most part, and that happens all the time, regardless of how high class you are. Again, not saying not to criticize, but do it without all the rather uncalled for aggression and vitriol.

Try to break out of that, you'll have more friends that way.

I'm sorry but there's a clear difference between people needing help and, in turn, getting it and assuming someone is incapable of handling something without assistance. It's patronizing to do so and strips people of their agency. Yes we appreciate the devs hard work and mistakes happen but you know what? You don't need to elevate people into a state where they can do no wrong.

EDIT: Since I feel it needs being said, y'all should not be conflating "softening the blow" with helping because softening the blow is closer to coddling which is not helping it is actively harmful. I am saying stop infantilizing the devs and acting like they cannot handle criticism. I have not condoned insulting or wishing harm upon others anywhere. If I am coming off as aggressive because I am telling you to stop treating others like children when they aren't children then so be it. Seriously, the whole time my thought process is I know the dev team can do better and if this upsets them then I hope they take the lesson to heart and it helps them do better. Please do not conflate me saying you do not need to soften the blow for adults to me saying you do not need to help adults.

This exactly. Yes, it should not have made it through QA, but it'll be fixed and resolved. In 10 years of a game running like this, something is bound to go wrong and very little ever slipped through SE's QA before covid started. Before then, I had never seen a single bug in years of playing. I saw them get fixed but I had never experienced any and I was really impressed.

I don't agree with the "they're full grown adults, they don't need your help" either. Who would want to work at a company where their customers are always negative to them? Respect goes both ways. They show it to us and it is important to show it back or why would they want to keep working there? I would be saying this even if Yoshi-P hadn't recently mentioned about the tone of forum posts in the JP forums, but that adds to my point.

Square don't make games for charity, they demand money every single month and will lock you off the game immediately and demolish your house even if they don't release content or make new events etc ( Genshin Impact its billion times better than FFXIV in terms of events and creativity sometimes they even stack 2 major events in one month FOR FREE while SE can only provides the same reused events with nothing of value ).

You pay money for a service. You should have the right to criticize their actions without them being emotional everytime someone calls them out on their BS.

The game is NOT perfect, us longer standing players have seen that time and time again. But this is the most sincere dev team and they don't deserve personal attacks.

People have warped definitions of what constructive criticism means. Thank you for this post OP. Glad to see we're not all crazy here.

Good luck devs on fixing this and if possible, please give us some insight into your long standing plans for housing. At this stage, it feels as though physical wards aren't sustainable and everyone paying the same sub, should have access to the same features.

They must feel so brave and smart after posting it lol. Too bad these posts only invoke cringe and embarrassment.

Waaaait... note of Encouragement ? Isn't me paying them monthly not encourage them enough ?

I actually love how every one says this was there best opportunity to buy a house when even with out the bug it was not. You have far more competition now than you did previously with the bid system as well as less wards than ever before on a new housing release. The system clearly did not stop boting or multi boxing as once again there are fcs with multiple houses. It is interesting how people keep lying to themselves. I swear when it comes to housing in this game people get delusions of grandeur but in reality they are just more moronic than usual.

I couldn't care less about housing, and the people that insult the devs instead of their work are trash and that's a given. But the devs are due criticism if they are to make a better game, and people have been voicing concerns for such a long time now. Healers, variety of endgame content, now housing (always has been, even more so now), so on and so forth.

Everyone wins from proper criticism and feedback, if devs take them into account. Just gotta keep things civil.

Thats a big if. Housing has been complained about ever since its introduction, and its only getting worse! While I don't condone harassing the devs, it's pretty clear they actually just don't give a shit. At this rate, I am definitely pro calling the housing team incompetent. It's not like they read the forum for the past decade, so they won't even know/care what we think of them. Calling them incompetent won't change anything, but neither does anything else - the former sure does make me feel better.
