The title 'Z'

The title 'Z' that one can obtain for completing their Zodiark zeta is quite old. Given recent events in the Ukraine and the letter Z becoming a pro-Russia symbol, perhaps it's time to change it.

I disagree on the basis that it's a letter in the alphabet and the game doesn't need to censor itself every time something big happens in the real world.

Stop giving words and letters more power.

I do think changing it to (or at least giving an alternative of) "Zeta" would be fair for those who dislike the potential association but want to use the title they earned.

It makes more sense to get "Zeta" from the Zeta weapons anyway.

It made sense for Zarya in Overwatch to have it removed as she's a Russian mercenary. It doesn't make sense here, it's just a damn letter in the alphabet.

I disagree. Giving the letter the power Russia wants it to have would just be playing right into what they want. Words and letters only have power so long as you let them. ‘Z’ is just a letter; nothing more. Stop giving it the association they want you to give it.

If they set a precedent by changing it, we'll just see people resort to concern trolling to amuse themselves or push ideologies whenever an opportunity presents itself.

It's not really the business of Square Enix to weigh in on complicated geopolitical issues in the first place, especially when they only ever do so selectively and with whatever safe, mainstream take will gain them praise on social media.

People go out of their way to associate stuff and it just enters realms of absurdity.
It was the same with coding and people going out of their way to find words like '' master '' and '' slave '' and associating it with the history of slavery in the US.
9 out of 10 times it's not even the people it'd be relevant to getting upset about it, and if anything it only makes people take things less seriously ( boy who cried wolf and all that ).
It was the same with the term '' blacklist '', '' black '' being associated with negativity was never a race thing it had to do with the darkness of night vs day and people being afraid of it and in some languages it even had the same meaning as death etc.
But people jump to '' black '' = dark-skinned person, and they don't understand the irony and hypocrisy.

It's the same psychological thing humans have that leads to people associating negative traits to different ethnicties too, humans are kinda hard-wired to look for associations and link things together.
Most people understand how dumb something like this is but some don't and just have tunnel vision.
It's the same with the okay hand sign for example where a bunch of people on 4chan started trolling about how it was a racist dogwhistle and then media outlets and people on social media ran with it and gave into it.
And you had people just accusing random people of being racist for doing it in photos even years back.

It's such a toxic aspect of human psychology and sadly in some people it's way worse and they have zero self-awareness about it.

There's no need. The title has its own meaning in the game. Just because it's being used elsewhere for something else doesn't negate that meaning.

Lets just removed it from the Alphabet too please.

No real hidden reference. You get it from The Letter Z achievement and that comes from obtaining an ARR Zeta relic. Those are easier than they were, but it's still an accomplishment.

I use it on my alt because she's got mostly story-related titles so I instead take pleasure in displaying a title she put some work in for. I prefer others on my main and I'll probably change my alt once I get those on her.

To the mods, can we possibly keep one of these threads and you can prune as necessary so this topic stops coming up?

Start with Z, and where does it end? Remove K from everything due it the KKK using it? A, because anarchists use a variation of it? Every single letter in the alphabet because someone, somewhere, has used it as a symbol for whatever shady/illegal activity?

The title is fine as is since it has zero relation to what Russia is doing.

The Z title should change because it’s meaning has changed. It stands alone as a symbol unlike the Z in words.

The meaning hasn’t changed for anyone who doesn’t see politics everywhere they look. As I said before: stop giving this letter power. It’s not related to Russia or any of their ideologies, so stop trying to turn it into the symbol they want it to be. It should continue to be treated as it always has been—because then what power will it have if others just see it as the last letter in a Latin alphabet and nothing more? None.

There is a difference between doing something polite for the people of Ukraine (like attempting to preserve their virtual houses during a crisis), and then succumbing to propagandist fearmongering when you shouldn’t be giving Russia any more psychological war power than they already have.

Besides, there was also a 7.2 Earthquake not too much later in Japan, so it would have been suspended anyways for the natural disaster.
