I was so glad when they mentioned Cyella and Unukalhai. That questline was one of my favorites from shadowbringers and I am so so excited to see the void being the main focus of the MSQ now. The story is giving me everything I need so far and I'm loving it! Can't wait to see what we'll find over there.
I'm honestly not expecting this whole "void" story arc to last past 6.3 and think it's mostly just there remind us that the 13th is a thing that should probably be dealt with in lasting capacity at some point.
It feels a bit soon to have shard-hopping be the crux of another expansion and think we'll most likely end up building up to a journey to Ilsabard or Meracydia after the business with Azdaja and Zenos' avatar is finished.
Is that Chaos? I thought that looked more like Golbez. It even played FF4 music during that scene.
I've been wanting to visit the shard of darkness for a while now so I'm all for it.
Don't like that our party is still the Scions. I want more new, original characters.
Void direction is okay. Will see where it goes.
Yep, obviously it has to be this way because of the completely fixed patterns of how they release content. Patches cannot have new outdoor exploration areas, so they can't take us to another continent or to the rest of Ilsabard or Othard, etc. The 13th is easy to confine to trials and dungeons since the whole thing is just a hostile wasteland, and then have it all be wrapped up before the next expansion can have whole new areas.
And though they said it wouldn't continue the same main story directly, your guess would be spot-on with their previous patterns - follow-ups for the first three patches, then two that act as a prelude to the expansion.
Why can't they though? The 4 Eureka zones are each just as large as any other overworld zone. Bozja and Zadnor are just slightly smaller. The Diadem is as big as 4 expansion sized maps. So there's no reason they "cannot" add new outdoor exploration areas. They simply just did not, and stuck to their usual pattern, but there's nothing preventing them from doing it.
Wonder if they are going all in on this void storyline or 6.2 will pull up another, like with ARR and Ishgard/Ala Mhigo.
It would probably feel a bit strange if the void ended up being just one expansion, seeing how it's the entire shard that's fallen for quite some time now and have probably developed new societies, compared to the first which was had lost most territory to the light but still stood.
I feel like I was sold a bill of goods with the whole "Newfound Adventure" thing. We got like one cutscene with Tataru where she's all "forget about being the hero that saved the world and just be an adventurer!" but then every other person you talk to is still calling you the hero of the final days and kissing the ground you walk on. And then they toss in the interdimensional badguy declaring war on us. THEY DIDN'T EVEN SHOW US RIDING ON THE BOAT WITH THE WIND IN OUR HAIR, YOU JUST TELEPORT STRAIGHT FROM THE BEACH TO THE DUNGEON. WHERE WAS THE ADVENTURE?
I found the story very mediocre. Maybe it's just me, but the jarring cut from all the death and destruction into "tee hee let's throw ourselves into another dimension" feels so... icky. I kind of feel like it undermines what our characters just went through.
I wanted to see the world build itself up after what the final days did more, and while I'm interested in the void stuff, I feel like it's too soon.
I know the devs wanted to give us a break from the darkness and sadness of 6.0, but... could we have least got an update on Garlemald? Where is Meteion now after she got away with the deaths of all those people? What about the twins and their efforts? Why should I give a single ounce of my time to Yshtola, arguably the most boring scion? Why did the Twelves storyline come out of literally nowhere? Why am I a hrothgar and where are my eARS NO THEY SPENT ALL THE BUDGET ON CUTSCENE ANIMATION AAAA--
The raid was easy, the dungeon was OK I guess, I just dunno man.
Personally I found the story to be a big nothing burger. Barely anything happened and I can’t say I’m excited about the idea of shard hopping. Also, to be frank, I am over the Scions and have been hoping a new cast of companions would be brought in or at least 1-2 new folks
It feels like they opted to resolve the lion's share of Garlemald's plot in the role quest finale as Alphinaud and Alisaie even remark about it in the aftermath.
I think anything that draws us there in the future will likely just be breadcrumbs pertaining either to the current story or the build-up to 7.x.
ZZzzzzZZZZzzzZZZzzzz
What a boring story ! And we are already back with the scions? Their disbanding was as fake as their death. It's not a newfound adventure, it's "follow Yshtola like a little dog so she can see Rugnar again".
I'm so tired being their lackey.
And where's the battle content? I though we were going on an adventure !?
And why locking the alliance raid story behind such a chore?
Pffftt.
I figured the Void was our next destination, just didn't realize it would be thrown at us so soon. Thought 6.1 was to be just a moment to destress after the Final Days but instead it's starting up immediately although I was happy to see Golbez and the 4 Elemental Fiends will be the antagonists this time around. Then we have Zenos' RPR avatar that is most likely the Azem fragment from the 13th wandering about and most likely will be our ally at some point during our adventure.
I haven't done the 24 man yet but the dungeon was fine, albeit very easy. My friend was on his SGE,while the rest of the party was a GNB, SAM and myself as a MNK. My friend died on both the 2nd and 3rd boss at around 60% but we were able to clear without him on both fights. Sad how little a healer is needed in dungeons anymore.
To me it seems like the story is working towards the Trial series everyone had wanted. Whether all 3 stories presented so far (Golbez and Fiends, Exploring the Void, and saving Azdaja) connect to the next expansion is debatable.
None of these are the same as what I was talking about, they have completely different rules and are instanced content, not regular areas. But mentioning them brings up a good point I missed when I wrote "trials and dungeons" - they could give us another "Field Operation" that takes place on the 13th, and that would be pretty cool! None of the others came in x.1 anyway, so it could definitely still fit with their established content patterns.
The void by FF lore connects the entire FF franchise, this does open the door to basically everything. One of FF's "easter eggs" is that most of the Gilgameshs you encounter in any FF game ist the one that fell into the void in FF5.
"Unlike other recurring characters, like Cid and Biggs and Wedge, it is heavily implied that the different characters named Gilgamesh encountered in different Final Fantasy games are the same person, using the power of the Rift to travel to different worlds. While this is plausible for some incarnations, there is no clear continuity to which incarnations of Gilgamesh are the same and how they relate to the others, as some Final Fantasy games give Gilgamesh a detailed backstory that may be at odds with his other appearances. In spin-off games, Gilgamesh is almost always representing Final Fantasy V unlike other recurring characters, whose different incarnations usually represent their own respective games."
This means if SE wants to abuse the rift travel, we could end up in almost any FF game, and while that sounds kind of neat this could be really weird ... i don't want to be a side character while cloud fights sephirot ... i want a story i did not see before.
There's also a problem with Golbez hes is not an antagonist but a mind controlled puppet in FF4, i suspect this will be explained later on however. The 4 lords may be our 3 extra non msq trials, because ... SE loves to stick to what they always did. Have one be a dungeon boss like Genbu and the rest be full scale trials.
Or they will be the MSQ trials/Dungeons bosses for a while. Considering its technically 5 bosses, i think the Golbez story line is here to stay for a while, unless they throw them under the bus and kill them all off real fast in solo duties.
That's only true for Gilgamesh, though. Other characters we've seen from other games are not the same, they're only inspired by. Even though we've seen characters like Xande, Cloud of Darkness, Omega, Krile, Galuf, FF7 weapons, the warring triad, etc., they did not step out of their universes and into FF14's. They're simply based on previous FF characters, and Golbez is likely to fall into the same category.
...Yeah, the mandela effect kicked in hard there for some reason and now I feel stupid.
Anyhow, I find it a little odd that the only significant difference between the avatar's "new" appearance and its original one with Zenos is that you can actually see its eyes now.
I still get the vibe that its circumstances were somehow different from that of a typical reaper avatar.
