Request for Better Dev Communication Regarding Job Balancing and Adjustments

In general, the FFXIV team has done a good job communicating with the community. However, when it comes to the matter of Job Balancing, the communication feels like it falls short more often than not.

The most recent liveletter 70 caused a veritable uproar between the removal of Samurai's Kaiten, and changing Ninja's Trick Attack amoung other things. While it has been made clear that the changes listed in the liveletter slides were not extensive and exhaustive, the choice of what was presented there is, somewhat dubious. The changes they list don't quite align with the players' concerns (afaik). Some examples below.

MCH has been asking for their Hypercharge to function on the stack system, no mention of it on the slides.

DRK Living Dead main concern is the 1-HP effect wearing off when the Walking Dead status is removed, the slide made no mention of this, instead instills a fear that DRK may further screw themselves over for multi-hit tank buster now that they can heal themselves too fast to remove Walking Dead. Also no mention of Blood Weapon being stacks, nor general gameplay feel adjustments.

WHM Primary concern is the Lily system being a DPS loss. Simply making Lilies DPS neutral would alleviate its MP issue. The Cure III, Assylum, and Liturgy changes are welcome QoLs but do not necessarily address WHM's core concern. There was an off hand regard for all healer MP changes, but having it on the slides would be better.

AST faces egregious Action and Button bloat issues, but no changes could be made in time for 6.1. But the decision was made to remove SAM's Kaiten, where there was little to no complaints to Samurai's general gameplay feel.

(As for SAM and NIN changes, they are my mains and I can write a full essay on why I disagree with the listed changes, but that is not the main point of the post)



Even in patch notes proper, there were many changes that made players raise their eyebrows in confusion.

Samurai's Iaijutsu range extension in 6.05 served almost no practical purpose, as a SAM main myself I have not encountered a single situation in the current Savage tier where this change was beneficial. On the other hand GNB has been drooling over this change for their Continuation skill.

Warrior's Tomahawk potency increase in 6.08 to 150 serves no practical purpose AFAIK

Monk in 6.08 got a potency increase on Phantom Rush when they already were the top DPS before that point.

Machinist's potency buffs in 6.08 were almost inconsequentially laughable when compared side by side to Dancer in the same role.



So I would like to propose a few changes, some easier to implement than others.


1. On the patch notes, for Job Adjustments, include a few lines explaining why the adjustments were made.
This should be the simplest to do, and would serve as a more integrated reference point as opposed to having to dig through old interviews or liveletters for the players to try to discern dev's intent.


2. Have a more dedicated channel for dev communication on Job Adjustments across all regions.
There are regional differences in the feedback provided to the devs on the forums. There has been a running joke in the English speaking community that the devs do not listen to the English forums. And due to the language barrier, players of the different regions are not necessarily aware of what other region are saying. If there can be a dedicated thread where the devs can let the players know which feedback for each job is being received, it would go a long way. I recognize this will require some effort in coordination and community localization to set up.


3. If schedule allows, get the job adjustment team on a liveletter.

4. This is probably impossible, but a striking dummy only beta test server could be useful.


Regardless of what your individual opinion might be on the details of the job adjustments, having better dev communication on the subject would benefit everyone.

Fully agree, I wonder where they get their job feedback from because its clearly not within their own forums considering their changes and tweaks for the last few years.

Agreed, the dev team needs to actually compile feedback and decide what they want to address. They tend to be rather closed-mouth about what they want to change and get frustrated when the playerbase reacts badly to their changes.

Compiling the issues thread for each role on the forums will do wonders in reading into player concern.

I agree that there needs to be an adjustment team that can communicate with the devs about player feedback. Sometimes I just feel that the devs are quick to jump the gun and find the easiest path to "fix" a job because they don't understand why players are complaining about it in the first place.

Example, no one asked for Kaiten to be outright removed. As someone who loves SAM deeply, I never had an issue with Kaiten and it's just one of those skills that felt natural to the job even if it's just superfluous.

To me they removed it because they see that the feedback on SAM is that it feels too crammed or unsatisfying so they jump the gun and make the job easier to play.

And we've seen this knee-jerk reaction before as they decided that AST's cards need to get dumb down because they think that's the most frustrating part of its kit. When in reality, AST has too many disconnected gimmicks that don't naturally flow into one another, feeling overwhelming as you need to keep track of everything because none of them affects the other.

There's a lot jobs that need more attention with larger issues like DRK having an identity crisis with LD potentially still being bad as the death penalty is still there.

Or BRD competing with DNC, a never-ending cycle of who's better because they have the same role as group buffer.

As much as i would love some communication, i feel for certain jobs they wouldn’t communicate whatsoever no matter what. They already showed their bias and double standard when they said they couldn’t abs wouldn’t do any drastic changes to healers because Ultimate was so close yet are doing drastic changes to dps with their logic being “we believe dps players will be able to adapt quickly to the new changes in time for Ultimate.” If they actually communicated they’d need to be prepared to acknowledge said double standard.

I would like to see them pick a particular job as a "Gold Standard" for complexity, ideally for each role, so we can know what they expect to be average difficulty/complexity. Whatever that sweet spot is.

I would also like to see what they think the basic rotation should be.

My DPS main is Samurai...

... and I'm not really sure what the issue is with Kaiten either. Is the purpose to encourage using other Kenki actions? If so, I've never really had a problem maintaining Kenki for them. While I want to main as DRG, SAM is just easier to play so I play it.

Samurai's Kenki gauge is just not a difficult thing to juggle compared to time-limited resources like... say, keeping Eye of the Dragon up or shuffling stances on Monk. Even the Enochian "clock". Those are not bad mechanics, it's just night and day compared to a resource you can build up and pop whenever.

As for WHM, it's more of a healer issue at large..but there's so much bloat, and really weird gimmicks that don't build on previous ones.

Just IMO, they really should just cut it down to:

CORE HEALING>
1 Single Target Cure, with added effect ("Cure", but also gives Regen. No Free Cure)
1 Single Target Expensive Cure ("Cure 2", but more like PLD's Clemency)
1 Single Target, Instant Free Cure Bomb (Benediction)
1 AoE Heal, with added effect ("Medica 2")
1 AoE Expensive Heal ("Medica")
1 AoE, Instant Free Cure Bomb (Asylum)
(I would swap Medica and Medica 2's names to keep it in line with cheap+gimmick and expensive cure bomb)

GIMMICK HEALING (uses Lilies, and have Lilies generate via DPS; more DPS = more free heals to weave)
1 instant cure bomb
1 instant AoE bomb

DPS (Use DPS to generate Blood Lilies)
1 DoT (Aero)
1 Regular DPS (Stone/Glare)
1 AoE DPS (Stone...2?)
1 Heavy AoE (Holy)

Rather than giving Tetragrammaton AND Divine Benison AND so on, I would say just have more charges of the above related skill. Like, WHM is not supposed to be a shield-healer, so why even have Divine Benison and not a "field of regen".

A lot of WHM's extra abilities seem to revolve around conserving MP (eg Thin Air, or Free Cure). If that is their gimmick, then make THAT the gimmick. Make maintaining MP an actual thing. If not, cut all that crap and make a new healer that revolves around that.

Devs have a history of listening to playerbase on multiple occasiond they just have to do better on Job adjustments and communication.

Job adjustments should have there own LL not just 3 panels in a slideshow where they only mention a few things for certain job then move on to talk about personal cards for 40 minutes ,also should have QA threads for these live letters so they can read feedback and more people can ask questions or voice concerns about jobs.

Hate to break it to you, but nobody's comments and threads aren't going to help at all. Ask myself or anyone else who has been a healer main since 2.x lol. Don't get your hopes up. I'm honestly surprised they even explained the few things they did behind the SAM changes.

We need better developer communication on all fronts. The community staff has been MIA on threads for months now. Pretty bad when all the crappy FPS games that get churned out every year have a more active community engagement team. I know those games have tons of other issues and fall short of what is communicated, but at least you don't feel ignored.

I love for them to do a QA on job adjustments and allow us to voice our concerns about the jobs. More often or not I feel the devs are not fully listening to all the feedback and concerns about jobs. Take the smn rework we haven't really heard them talk about it for a bit since they first show off the rework pre-EW. Since then all they have done has been added some buffs to phoenix and allow SL to be used without having carby on the field. These are just the tip of the iceberg that is smn flaws and I would love to hear their plans and opinions on the future for the rework since most would say the rework of smn feels very rushed and unfinished. I just like to hear something about it so it shows they are listening to everyone's concerns.

The kicker is that the devs actually have a Dev Blog. They occasionally post some neat articles, like this one where they talked with some artists on how they designed animations for swimming and underwater actions. That's some cool shit right there, hearing actual devs talk about what they do and the troubles they face designing stuff. Maybe, just maybe they could get some members of the Job Design team to communicate stuff there? Or maybe a Lodestone post? Something, anything, because Yoshi-P going "we don't have a lot of time this Live Letter to discuss changes" is getting real old, and as a player I feel like I don't understand what the hell his team is thinking. Yoshi-P once stated that it's important to have open and honest communication with the player base, and that no longer exists when it comes to Job design.

To be fair, they dont go over every single detail for job adjustments within the live letter because its indeed a very heavy load to cover something that is supposed to be a general expected content overview in a patch. That being said this is where they do need to have a separate stream for job adjustments so that they can dedicate focus on communicating those changes and getting feedback from players more, because yeah this stuff is important too.

I know this may not be a huge issue on teams who are use to playing together, but dear lord in prae, castrum and every dungeon I have Midare Setsugekka or Tenka Goken. Sometimes the tank will move just slightly backwards and it would cancel the cast of these two skills. Higibana was usually at the perfect time where they wouldn't move, but this honestly would make me pull my hair out. I know you have to move sometimes as a tank because I tank, but it would get so obnoxious. It could have also been an issue with mobs not being where they were for me as they were for the server. I have had many issues with other things ping related where the mobs will be farther away than they actually were or somehow behind me and my character would do a half spin to get to a mob that was way in front of me on my screen. I feel it was just a minor gripe honestly, but I could see how this change could have been one people wished for not playing with decent ping.

Mechanist has been getting the short end of the stick for really no reason. I agree with pretty much everything you are saying and would wish for them to be more open and communicate honestly with why they are making these changes and maybe hold some form of vote with the player base through the game. Steam does this for its census data to know what types of pc's people are playing on to better understand who has a potato pc and who is actually using their platform, so they know not to go through with changes that would needlessly increase performance. Though it was not very transparent that I could have a simplified steam until I did an extensive search about how to get the clutter from my steam library (streams playing in the back ground or random gifs just loading on the community pages, you can change it so you just have your library and nothing else) so I could play Pyre. This still stands though at least they ask. I would like for them to ask what changes not just go through with some or mention many and just I guess forget about them because someone higher up told them we need to change things for those use to mobile gaming because that is where the quick money is currently.

Ask everyone what they actually want. Even a poll on what classes everyone plays the most, how often they play in general, playing habits could also help. Knowing if many just do not jive with a class but wish to stick it out and they are who the devs are changing things for not the people who enjoy the classes for many hours a day or week or months. I do not mean to just listen to everyone and not have an idea for how they wish the game to be played, but to take into consideration the voices that maybe play the jobs more than they do such as healers. The devs do not play them so listen to people who actually do.

The jobs are a heavy part of what you would call in development the primary gameplay loop. The core focus of the gameplay that everything revolves around. Naturally when unpopular changes are made to it, there's usually damn good reason. The worsening of this Primary loop is why some jobs go unplayed for years.

When yoshida decided some time ago he was refusing to discuss job changes further in live letters, it was pretty much unanimous the uproar. We have seen since then its because he refuses to have explainations for why things are changed, what the focus of each job is etc. All of this has resulted in worse and worse job design over the years, particularly since yoshida has very heavy biases as has been increasingly documented.

The sudden reappearance of jobs in the live letter was a good step in the right direction. As was the answering questions in letter 69 (the horrible dismissal of healer complaints aside)
We've had much fewer Q&A sessions over the years. We need more communication from the dev team

It will be better from the devs too in the long run. They can get better feedback and act upon it if they genuinely did miss issues such as drk's blood weapon needing stacks for YEARS on end.

Imagine having crazy overhead on things that don't need overhead at all and for things that do need overhead you just got: The bros
Yoshida having any major say in how jobs are balanced at all is a huge issue that has now fully bared its ugly teeth.

I do concede that my main experience playing samurai is within the current savage tier, but it is nice to see that change being positive in lower level areas.

I really don't get the Ast button bloat complaint. Its actually fun because you have buttons to think about... Its the main reason why I find WHM and MCH so boring , but sure lets make everyone job boring as all hell

From what I've seen it's not necessarily that people want buttons outright deleted (other than Undraw) but for them to be better consolidated and for the opener to not be so busy in terms of how much you're hitting.

The way it goes is Foxclon says they monitor the forums and feedback, and make a report of what they are seeing and relay it up. That doesn't mean they touch everything but you also have to remember a few months ago YoshiP called out people who were being blatantly rude to the devs in the forums.

He likes his SHb-style of changes of just adjusting numbers and moving on now unless it's a special project (SHb Summoner, EW Dragoon/AST 6.2+). Does this skill need to be more potent, is MP value correct, etc. If anything I'm kind of glad they realized they need to start nerfing things again instead of playing lets bring everyone up. It's better to bring down one value than mess up numbers for 3 more jobs, and playing the rat race.

main issues is draw/play and minor arcana which add unnecessary button bloat.
you don't need 2 button to stack and release, especially for cards that deal identical buff to all.(same card effects also ast issue btw)

Draw/Play being 1 button was a complaint I made back in Shb when I joined the game and picked up AST. Pray tell me WHY do I have ANOTHER ONE (Minor Arcana/Crown Play)?

You should look up AST's opener. FFXIV's crappy coding and the poor servers + netcoding makes double-weaving aggravating.

Draw and Play should have been consolidated. Same with Minor Arcana and Crown Play, but I'd rather they remove Minor Arcana since it adds nothing to the gameplay but RNG trash.

Draw/Play used to be a consolidated action back in Heavensward/Stormblood, then they eventually got divided going into Shadowbringers. The same for Minor Arcana too, although that was a single target ability so you still had to toggle to an ally/foe to heal or attack, whereas you can just blindly mash that key now to heal or attack.

Would definitely like it if they could be combined once more, at the moment the only problem would be seeing how many stacks of [Draw] you have, and in a way not being able to see the [Minor Arcana] re-cast timer - so I do get why they may be split at the moment (or hope, since sometimes class changes feel like russian roulette).

not for healers cause that would mean they have a chance to get better which the devs seems adamant on denying such hope, example liturgy was expected to trigger from allies getting damaged and then we got....that abomination of implementation for a healer skill.

AST's biggest problem is how disconnected their system is.

We have Divination that is just a 2min buff, cards that need to be thrown at the right time, Astrodyne, Minor Arcana.

None of these things correlate to one another.

Cards relating to Divination build up? Nope they deleted that. Aligning seals with Divination was the pay off and even if it's just all dps buffs, at least you felt impactful. Getting that last seal and hitting Divination felt good. Now it's just another button to press off CD.

Cards are the same-ish but somehow they feel worse. The seals only charge Astrodyne and even then it's better that you give the correct card out rather than seal alignment.

Astrodyne is a personal buff.....why? Sure the spell speed and mp regen are very welcomed but at the cost of disconnecting AoE buffing from cards? Half the time Astrodyne feels lacking and often forgotten about.

Minor Arcana used to be what you used to use cards but didn't want to mess with your seals. It had a purpose and now it's back to being an RNG dmg card/heal and neither are usually on the right moment.

As much crap as I gave AST in ShB, it at the very least had a system that was easy to grasp and connected.

You draw cards, pick a dps to use them on, get whatever seals you can via redraw, pop Divination. Set up your next set of seals, throw filler cards into Minor Arcana so they're still useful.

Now it's just a job with too much going on for no payoff.

Has become so busy that it's almost exhausting to play because you need to watch everything and AST has so much potential. It just sucks that the devs don't have a clue on how to do it.

Agreed, been wishing for better clarity since a long time.

We never know where the Dev team is going, what are their intentions.
A lot of your examples, to not say all, are on point with the feeling of Dev team being disconnected from forum feedback.
They mention button bloat but many actions are the same, except one is single target and the other is AoE, see Shoha and Shoha II, repeated for 2 other actions.

I also want to point out that even the Japanese side of the forum thinks the Dev team is only listening to the English side.

If you arent on the JP forums ....then your opinions are close to irrelevant imho.

Just like with ffxi, SE has a history of jp feedback > everyone else.

We try, and we should!! We sputter about here on the NA forums but ultimately they react to please JP.

More Class mean more stuff to balance around, the dev probably need more member for the class design and balancing along with more quality assurance which include Q&A with players, in my opinion, they should add more member on that aspect but knowing the dev, they would rather have more member to work on new content rather than existing content

I main Ast. I know the opener and I have no issues with it.

I think that part of the problem is that being able to design something doesn't always mean that you're going to feel comfortable or personable talking to thousands of people on camera to Twitch/YouTube/Nico. Yoshi/Foxclon have been doing this for years so they can discuss the subject matter comfortably while being entertaining at the same time. When you think about how long some of these Live Letters go on for (upwards of 4+ hours), it's probably an incredibly stressful experience and I'm sure that they'd love to have someone equivalently charismatic and knowledgeable on the subject matter stand up and talk instead. But they're eventually going to have to train up more of their team members to sit in front of a camera.

What I would like to see them eventually do is actually make use of their channels and host more frequent, more focused, and shorter segments on topics of interest, be it job design philosophy and current balance issues, housing/glamour stuff, or whatever. That way you can tune in to the stuff that you're interested in, rather than wading through a lot of fluff to get there. Even if they did it in something like an interview/Q+A format it would work, because then really only the show host has to be a good conversationalist. Even a podcast might be nice if it's a less intimidating format.

which was, I remind you, exclusively about japanese people sending death threats and insults over the samurai 'buff', which, of course, meant that a ton of people in the english forums went on and virtue signalled about it here to bully people into silence and to not criticise the poor, multi billion dollar indie company that is sparing no expense and cares so, so much about feedback (lol).

I implore you to re-read that thread and see the difference in attitudes and behaviours of the posters in there, you'll notice that those 'nice' people were constantly attacking, insulting and insinuating things against any kind of critical person, hell, this happens in every single damn thread where some kind of criticism is present.

One change that I think flew under everyone's radar is BRD's DoTs no longer interacting with songs. I would like to know more on what happened between the Media Tour and EW release that made them decide to remove this interaction and give songs a flat 80% to proc, because as far as I remember nobody was asking for that kind of change back in ShB. I can guess maybe people were complaining about the RNG at which point they just simplified it but we may never know for sure. Just feels bad because I feel like giving feedback on jobs in this game has an equal chance of either being ignored, monkey paw'd or actually getting a good fix.

Good point to bring up about being comfortable sitting in front of the camera, I only thought about the scheduling issue that comes with getting them on the liveletter. That being said, I agree it is important to get them comfortable communicating with the community.
While I can definitely see some unfiltered vitriole being thrown when they first show up on camera, hiding behind Yoshi-P all the time and sticking their head in the ground against many valid criticisms and concerns will not help.

The best you can do is submit your feedback to the devs in a polite manner. Then they will silently look at the feedback given, consult their peers about it, and brainstorm what to do with that information and whether its actually worthwhile.

At this point in time the devs do read and care. The more barbed the discussions get, the less they are likely to listen. Simple as.

where was that when healers gave their feedbacks and got ignored in every possible way or did they read feedback and the answer they gave healers is whm who suffer from mp issues have thin air, his core mp management skill, nerfed and never adjust his high mp cost due to that change cause that makes it "better"?
