WoL Job Headcanons!

A headcanon I have is that the voidsent we bond with as a Reaper is actually our counterpart from the 13th - the Shard consumed by Darkness (aka now the Void). I was a little let down by the Reaper quests not giving us more one-on-one time with our voidsent so I made my own.

What do you think? Does anyone have any bits of lore they made for their WoL regarding jobs?

I don't have a headcanon with any particular Job specifically, but more involving the Armoury System in general, specifically dealing with the marid in the living room that is why the WoL regularly is forgetting abilities and spells they previously were using due to SE removing abilities or changing the battle system specifically (i.e. scrapping the cross-class ability system and replacing it with 'role abilities').

And what I came up with is story-wise at least, my WoL is being pragmatic and simply is not using them by choice - in my character's case as a GLA/PLD old Conjury spells she could use before (under the Cross Class system) like Cure might have been suitable when she was still early in her career as an adventurer still recovering from her near-death in the Calamity when she was usually just fighting nothing more frightening than an overgrown flytrap, but now, as the WoL facing down gods and anthropromorpthic-personifications at the very edge of the universe, the band-aid healing Cure gives just does not cut it anymore, so she doesn't bother with it, especially with the holy healing Clemency gives is just far more effective.

Same goes with weaponskills like Rage of Halone that are replaced at higher levels, or skills like Shield Swipe that were removed, she can still use them story wise, but just doesn't bother with them for pure pragamatism where higher level skills like Blade of Valour are just so much more useful, and so she sticks with them exclusively.

My headcanon is that the canonical 'trailer Warrior of Light' is extremely self-centered and impatient. Consider: The closest thing he gets to playing support is starting as Archer in 1.0. However, the time we next see him in a cinematic is the End of an Era scene, where he's a Warrior. What happened between those two? Well, jobs got introduced and Archer became the support-angled Bard.

After this point, we see him with an even amount of experience with tanks (Warrior in 2.0, Dark Knight in 5.0, Paladin in 6.0) and melee DPS (Dragoon in 3.0, Monk and Samurai in 4.0). But note that through all of this the only melee DPS job he dodged, outside of Reaper which is one expansion old, was Ninja--the only melee DPS with low personal damage output, because it's designed with more of an angle to support. Dragoon got more of that later with Dragon Sight, but remember that came in Stormblood, and the WoL was only a Dragoon in 3.0. In fact, only with 6.0 has Trailer WoL actually touched a job with cast times.

This is completely unrelated to the thread, but there's my WoL job headcanon: that Trailer WoL is the kind of guy that outright refuses to play anything that he doesn't perceive as 'party leader'.

I was hoping we'd see him as Summoner in the 6.0 trailer, the summons could provide the required physicality for epic CGI clashes.

Titan bursting forth from trailer-WoL to block an attack, he swaps to Ifrit who charges and knocks back the foe, then pulls out Bahamut for a big blast of magic, done. Cut to Y'shtola or whoever.

As for job headcanon, my WoL is preternaturally gifted at using job stones, but pretty damn terrible at actually memorizing the techniques held within. Hence forgetting everything as soon as she puts down the stone. :rolleyes:

My own headcanon definitely depicts the WoL as a melee job, which includes the tanks. When we return to Garlemald after our journey to Elpis, I couldn't even imagine doing the solo instance as anything but a tank. If I would have shown up like the hero of the day only to toss out some Broils or Chakrams, it just wouldn't be as fitting. I can make an exception for a melee job like SAM or MNK, but then the bosses attention would've been on G'raha. Unacceptable in my head.

WoL just does not strike me as a supporting role in even the slightest.

My own WoL is a Summoner main, and I headcanon that he has put so much of his personal aether into his Carbuncle that it has practically gained sentience and can be pretty much a persistent presence.

I have more than one character so it varies, and I like the idea of them just being an Adventurer and that when they first arrived in their respective cities, they then choose a guild/fighting style, and that when you got to the point where you could join another guild they decided to be a member of all guilds because they couldn't be satisfied without trying to be the best in every arena, they are total fighting junkies who live for the thrill of combat in all its forms.

Most of the scions are incredibly smart, academic types, so I like to think of my WoL as the "dumb jock" type to round out the cast (she's not actually stupid, just maybe a bit scatterbrained at times, but I can't think of a better way to describe the archetype I have in mind) It's why I'm always thrilled with dialogue choices that let me express that kind of character, and subsequently stick to tank roles.

And she loves fighting and rising to the challenges in front of her, and believes in the power of friendship. If SE is gonna write the WoL as an anime protagonist, might as well lean into it.

Personally Avarnia would still use all her nasty and fun stuff eg scourge, time dilation, shadowflare etc but given she's often fighting with the scions now and coincidentally it was when shb's ripped away everything fun in a lot of jobs, she's got to hold back since they only just recently started knocking out primals and similarly strong beings with her and she doesn't want to catch them in the cross fire.

She hasn't touched a job stone in some time outside of reaper and sage, and only those to understand the basics of their weapons. She prefers to learn on her own rather than risk being weakened because a job stone got broken like drk's did in Stormblood.


Her preferred method of fighting would be an astrolabe and rapier, or a two handed weapon, preferably one of them gunlances she picked up when she visited her Rathalos' homeland. If not, a gunblade, halberd or scythe will do.
If she's able to fight at full strength, then a two handed greatsword is also fun (as in, heavensward drk please)

Did anyone else pick Alcohol as their WoL go-to beverage of choice?

If I remember right I chose water or milk or one of the boring drinks. I don’t drink much irl and consider my WoL an extension of me lol. Every dialogue option I choose is what I’d imagine I’d say in that situation

I'm the same, I went with tea as I recall as Enki isn't a drinker, like me. But she does like her tea. :D

But yes, my dialogue choices throughout the game have been how I imagine my character would respond in terms of the story I've written for her, and by extension, myself.

Of course there have been a couple of times where I simply could not resist the urge to choose the obvious humorous or 'nonsense' choice, if appropriate though! ;)

On one hand she loves her tea, particularly coerthan tea especially when she got it from back home in Dravania and its great when she's gearing up to do some healing
On the other hand...she's lived in limsa for a good chunk of her life and the msq has made a tipple quite appealing some times. Also after a few terrible dungeon runs with other adventurers alcohol is needed.

which brings up a headcanon

Avarnia learned alchemy in hopes she could enchant her weapons and armour. The secondary purpose was to invent a flask of endless booze which she could sell for millions of gil...or keep on her for after those terrible dungeon runs

I like to imagine the WoL drinks hard when it's free, causing her to get drunk play her aetherguitar loud and hard, churning out tunes that you would otherwise hear in trials and raid boss battles which leaves the other scions baffled, and yet incredibly psyched but then after the bender is over she wakes up and remembers nothing of the music she made or that night at all. Even if the other Scions try to jog her memory or ask her to play her aetherguitar she can't seem to perform at all.

My WoL was always an academic Black Mage and became an adventurer to learn new magic. Always considered the Scion/adventuring lifestyle as some sort of mistake they fell into and it's been like running down a steep slope ever since. They started taking up other jobs because the mad lifestyle clearly dictated getting fit and physically strong just in order to stay alive what with all the running and jumping and people and monsters trying to chop you with sharp things. So I sorta see all the other jobs as a fitness routine and the other DoM jobs as simple expansions of my original academic love of magic.

Not really a job lore headcanon, but I imagine that my character is just as invested in the history and lore side of things that I am. I was quite glad that I got some opportunities in Sharlayan to show my character as knowing their share of esoteric lore.

Honestly this would be me if I was transported into the game lol. I’d grow fond of the Scions for sure, but I’d hate the physical aspect of fighting.

Not meaning to be rude or anything by pointing this out, but I do believe we may know the identity of our counterpart from the 13th. In fact, if you've done the Warring Triad quests, you've definitely met him.

As for headcanon? With new information provided in Endwalker, I can't help but feel the emotionally driven nature of DRK means it's probably utilizing dynamis alongside aether.

With the close-up on eye color and the structure of the story, the Warring Triad NPC is strongly hinted to be the 13th shard equivalent of one of Arbert's companions/best friend of said companion and not Ardbert (and thus carrying a fragment of Azem).

Well, not the Azem that most people mean when they say Azem. As for head-canons, considering that there can be multiple people running around with the Blessing of Light and Crystals and were throughout history, my theory is that some of them have shards of the previous Azem holders before Venat and 'our' Azem who had already joined the Lifestream.

If you're talking about U boy he is not our shard from the 13th, they're hinting at him being the Black Mage guy from the first Nyellebert or however is name is spelled.

They also hint repeatedly that he could well be you from the 13th. Doesn't help that the Azem-worshipping Elidibus stepped in to save him instead of one of the others, which I'll note is in addition to the comparatively recent hint dropping about it possibly being you and not the black mage as originally suspected. Personally, given the choice, I would much rather Diabolos be the Azem fragment from the 13th.

Have you done the quests after the ShB role quests involving the crystals of light from the first's Warriors of Light Taynor explicitly states that working in tandem and the feel of U boy's Aether was familiar to him. Seeing as how he was working very closely with Nyellebert before he was trapped in in the Void well over 100 years ago.
Yet never worked with our character in that way.


That Azem worshipping Elidibus also saved Cylva from the 13th at the same time he rescued U boy... he did it to use them as pawns.

As a matter of fact I have done those quests. Those quests only furthered the commonly held belief that the boy is a fragment of Azem...somehow. Which, now that you have reminded me of them, is just confusing. It would appear that I was indeed mistaken. I'd forgotten about those quests conflicting with other text in the game, and we do have to take the most recent information as canon in matters such as these.

Uhm those quests never furthered the belief they completely pushed them aside and trampled on them. At which point does it hint that U boy is our soul shard from those quests?

I uh... just said they don't? I agreed with you? I'd completely forgotten about what they said until you reminded me about it. Others, however, have in the past frequently reference them as evidence of the kid with the annoying-to-spell name being an Azem fragment.

Since I'm in here... my go to job for my WoL is always magic, though he is kinda partial to dancer... and wants to kill moogles as a dark knight... but the latter is after he's gotten so trashed that he drunkenly teleports out to mog home at times and passes out on top of them... (they're really soft and give good hangover drinks)

Ahh, I’ve read the rest of the posts so I’m still unsure as to who in the 13th is our counterpart and it’s been so long since I did the Warring Triad quests lol. I just thought it’d be cool from a lore standpoint why that specific voidsent bonded with us.

As a Lalafell Dragoon, I absolutely use Jump for mundane things like reaching things on high shelves, high-fiving people, or just getting around places. I'd also use it to cheese Leap of Faith if the Gold Saucer would let me.

I forgot to add! As a RDM, I like to think the focus on our rapier is actually the one casting our second spell in our Dualcast talent. It’s sentient and chimes or lights up when it communicates and loves to help in battle.
