Sudden FPS drops

Hello,

I started to play FFXIV since March/April, and I honestly love this game. One of my favourite games I play so far! But, since a few months I experience random sudden fps drops over the day. I never had this problem before, it started somewhere around end of August or September, and I only have it when playing FFXIV. To fix this I have to close the game and wait a few minutes before I can restart it again. The sudden FPS drops happen in cities, outside areas, dungeons, raids etc. You can say it happens anywhere in the world.

I tried to Google the answer and see if more players had these problems, but their solutions didn't work for me.
What I tried:
- Turn off VSYNC in NVIDIA Control Panel
- Get a laptop cooler to cool down my laptop while gaming
- Reset my laptop (08/01/2022)

I'm not technical at all, but I know my way around the laptop once I know what to do and where to look at.

Hopefully someone can help me with my problem.

Hey, if it is a laptop then it could be that it accidently activates some energy saving things and the game slows down. Set the energy profile to "Standard" or maximum. :)

And i would not use tools like CCleaner. The internal cleanup mechanisms in todays Windows are good enough. :)

In this case it could be a problem with overheating and a piece of hardware throttles down to prevent damage. You can measure it with HWINFO64. You can download it here:

Start this tool and then play the game. It will collect data and if the game is slow again then post a screenshot of the tool. :)

It is enough to download the zip version so you do not need to install it. But then again, start the tool, then play FF14 until the game dropps to 20 fps. Then post a screenshot.

Yeah, your laptop is overheating. Should open the bottom up and clean it with an air duster / air can. Clean those fan blades and heatsink fins.

HWInfo does report temperatures, and does a better job of it than HWmon which is known to crash graphics drivers to blank screen,

The user is prompted at start on what they want hwinfo to display, Sensors only will immediately open the sensors panel.

By default it will open both the CPUID/GPUID and Summary panels, for which the summary panel has a button to open sensors.

Already did that in August and last month- Also bought a laptop cooler to cool it down.
Temperature of my laptop right now is 50 degrees, yesterday it was hanging between 70 - 78 degrees at the end of the day. Didn't had any lag/fps drop yesterday- But like I said, its very random.

many intel 9 and later series notebooks begin to throttle at 70c and then hard throttle at 80c.

Weirdly enough I had no problems when it was between 70 -80 degrees.. o.o I'll just keep an eye on it and I will post a screenshot when the fps drops again.

Temperature is around 70 - 80 degrees rn, no fps drop.

Look, I know not everyone knows how to open a laptop. It's just a few screws around the bottom. After opening it, get an air can and blow the dust out of those fans and heatsink. Dust is the electronic biggest enemy, it blocks airflow to allow cooling.

91° C for the package is high. I can imagine that the CPU will throttle down because of it. If you can open your laptop then you should clean the CPU fan. And maybe replacing the thermal paste would also be very good. :)

The last time that they cleaned my laptop (make it dust and hair free) was about a month ago, and before that it was in August. I'll contact with the local electronic store, who also cleaned my laptop a few times, and ask if they can replace the thermal paste.
Sadly I can only do that when the lockdown is over and when my wrist is healing up v_v

As a small workaround, you could try the tool ThrottleStop.

If your CPU is supported (i don't know ;), you get an error message if not) then there is an option "Disable turbo". It will prevent that the CPU will clock very high and this means less heat. But the game could now run slower overall.

Throttlestop can no longer undervolt notebooks that are completely up to date with windows updates or bios updates, the microcode was updated to prevent the cpu accepting VID reductions. (a knee jerk reaction to a security vulnerability that can't even be pulled off remotely)
