How often do you change up your hotbars?

Shuffling skills, changing up keybinds, rearranging layouts. How well do you adjust to change and induce it yourself?

Aside from dealing with new/obsolete skill changes, I'm not sure I've changed my hotbars much in several years. But, starting to find a need for more button access, and starting to play around with new keybinds that I should've seen ages ago. Might still take a bit to develop new muscle memory though.
Also feeling like sometime soon-ish I might have to start playing around with hotbar swapping/hiding macros or something, for non-combat related buttons.

I'll change them once when I start leveling them/finish leveling them, usually leaving them weirdly shaped, then not again.

Unless it's like last year when I got a new computer, then I had to do everything all over again since I didn't save the settings, oof.

Very rarely, and this holds across jobs within the same role as well. I just have places where I like to have certain abilities and will even tend to keep those similar abilities in the same places across multiple jobs.

So, yeah, unless something drastically changes about a job at a fundamental level I at most just tinker with my buttons.

I have keybinds that I've used for a very long time, I have a hotbar layout I set up when I started the game based on my hotbar layout from another game. I never deviate from this or change it.

My core hotbars stay the same, I rely on muscle memory for a lot ahah. Biggest change I do is when I'm done leveling a class I strip it down to the barebones needed for my rotation and stuff in a trial. IE Smn went from needing 3 hotbars (barely... I just needed consistency for role actions ahah) to needing 1 hotbar for the rotation and one hotbar for summons.

But I do regularly change up my menu macro!

I change my HUD and keybainds if I change the way I play the game. An example would be moving from a normal Keyboard/Mouse to using an MMO mouse.

I only change my hotbars when the skills change. Otherwise they all follow a very common theme and pattern which works across jobs within roles. For instance all my flank/back positional skills (yeah there's not a lot anymore) share positional buttons on the controller: Dpad right, or Dpad down. This way whatever DPS i'm playing that uses them I can be sure I'm doing it right.

So pretty much I only change the skills when the Devs change them such as when a new expansion releases.

Generally never. But it might change very very slightly (1 button swap it most) if i will pick the job for raiding.

Depends on what changes happen when an expansion releases....basically just removing skills that were removed and adding new ones. That's basically the only time I change the bars after first setting them up

I'll change them around quite often until I get them the exact way I want them. The more I play the more I find a better way to arrange them, but once I get them right I don't bother them again unless they change stuff.

My keybinds for FFXIV were more or less set back around 2008 0r 2009 in WoW.

As in, to aid in physical memory, I have been using roughly the same purpose finger presses as I can across many different MMOs. The spot my fingers reach for my main spamable attack is the same here as it is in WoW, ESO, and even League of Legends... My primary location to switch to AoE is the same, my interrupts are in consistent spots, and so on. And then a few details move around here and there because of the number of things different games or classes need me to keybind.

For a while I was playing on a Mac, and I use a Razer Nostromo / Orbweaver / etc keypad - and Razer deleted it's software support for Mac, so I could change any of the keybinds on the pad. So instead all my games had some crazy wild keybinds so that I would be pressing the same same keys as always, across all games, but still able to use a keypad that had no driver support...

(Until the day I learned that a Mac running windows in bootcamp runs faster than a Mac running it's own native OS...)

Now I'm on PC fully and yeah - still using the same basic layout I made for myself more than a decade ago. The less you need to retrain your fingers, the faster you can react.

I've been using a similar hotbar setup since roughly 2009 when the razer naga came out, so not often. Used that setup in WoW, SWTOR, FF14, etc.

Before that, my EQ hotbar setup (circa 1999) carried into WoW.

Yeah, macros like that are what I need to look into. Maybe for job changing. Might could use one for mark bills. And something else that's slipping my mind..

I think it's the out of combat stuff that's probably naturally easiest to change up.

When an expansion starts I get things where I want them and they usually stay that way until the next one.

I keep to the same keybinds and hotbars I started using in 2007-2008 in WoW, no matter the MMORPG, so long as it's possible (things change slightly in action MMOs, but it follows the same theme). It is incredibly convenient to learn new classes/jobs/games this way, since despite differences in execution of abilities, so long as it's on the correct keybind, I will roughly know what it's going to do. It helps track cooldowns as well, and you'll quickly know the class's weaknesses because certain keybinds will remain empty.

The tank, healer, DPS buttons each swap out class hotbars. For example:

So you'd put all the buttons you need onto MRD hotbar 1 (instead of WAR) and it would copy that hotbar onto "current" hotbar 7. MRD 2 would be healer, MRD 3 would be DPS. Then since I wanted ease of access I switched over to CNJ (instead of WHM) and did the same thing for the emotes, mounts, and minions.

To change job stones, this would be the macro

micon changes it to the pretty job icon, /snap is just the snap emote. /gs change changes it to gearset 1 (PLD gearset for me). After 2 seconds it turns the menu off so I don't have to manually click anything.

Rarely. Sometimes I switch out a few skills as for a less used one for a more frequent.

Am also looking into ways of if I can maybe make some skill button pressing even easier and more efficient as I don’t like to use keyboard (and mouse) but do play controller but sometimes it doesn’t all fit as nicely and do need to switch between most used and less used often press wrong buttons because they are at the same spot of bar 2 (my main fight bar) but I needed something less used from 1 or 3…
Sometimes to dodge or evade you need to throw in a little sprint and that is also out of the way for me.
So I really need something more efficient that works ok with responding smoothly and makes dodge + attack at same time as easy for me as a controller.

Usually once every expansion, aside that, not much just little things you change through the course of time.

When I started playing this game I changed all the text colours and keybindings to be the same as they were in WoW since that was what was familiar to me. The only time I make changes now is when a new expansion comes out and I need to prune or add new abilities.

I did remove some spells like Flash since they no longer exist but other then that my hotbars been the same since 2014.

Never unless they change or remove job skills.

Once an expansion, when I get new skills.
Sometimes not really even then, just slotting new skills into blank space / removed abilities.

I guess I've changed my "main class" like 5 times over the years, so then as well.

Aaand macro'd my hunt bills to save hotbar space. Now some extra general slots I can fill with... something.

Honestly surprised how little people seem to change. My hotbars have certainly gone through some iterations.
Total fresh newbie beginner just using one, maybe two hotbars.
There was a period where I tried some focus target healing macros off on their own hotbar.
At some point I switched over to utilizing NUM pad. May have been around then that I set up a shared hotbar for some generic stuff.
Now I'm assessing buttons that should be easily within reach of my typical hand placement and upping my buttons while hopefully reducing some of the skill scatter, reorganizing a bit.
Next might be looking into setting some new Ctrl+ binds, though Idk if that works for NUM pad...

I only change them when my abilities change.

I usually only change them during the leveling process, with the skills I use the least being the ones that are the most likely the move around since they are the least likely to be bound to muscle memory. Moving around skills that are used frequently can actually be disastrous in some cases. Sometimes this is necessary though. As I gain experience with any job, I will typically notice that some skills will flow better if assigned to a different slot. When this happens, I will usually spend some time solo or on a dummy getting used to the new placement.

I've made two, maybe three major revisions to my hotbars since ARR, but hundreds of small adjustments on a per-Job basis, to the degree that I don't think my hotbars from 2021 would be recognizable as the ones from 2013, outside of maybe one or two keybinds that never change.

My sprint has been on the same button since beta and that might be the only thing.

I adjust them ONCE an Expansion. I look at the skills and decide what button will feel best.
