Why Is Gathering Equipment About 10x Too Expensive On Excalibur?

It's frustrating as heck.
I get back into the game after a year+ of burnout, decide to gear up my BTN Retainer, and all the level 20 gear on the Market is 30,000 gil or more!

Who, at level 20, is going to have 180,000 gil to spend on equipping an NPC? Or themselves?
Maybe it's because I don't continually sell stuff, but I rarely have more than 200,000 gil at any given time.

Try world visiting other severs on your DC, Gilga is one stop shopping centre in Aether prices are lowest there because of the population . Your DC probably have something equivalent.

First, google "universalis". You can world hop to take advantage of the lowest price, though, not while login queues are in effect, so you'll have to do it at off peak times.

But secondly, at level 20 you don't need marketboard gear. Just get fill ins from NPC vendors. Crap gear is more than enough for leveling. You don't even really need top end gear for profitable gathering right now (Hey, I gather level 90 materials that sell well and my right side is still all level 80).

Wait, you're gearing up your RETAINER.
You don't even need a full set of gear - just enough to unlock the highest 18-hour venture.
Or if you're willing to do it all through quick ventures, you can probably get all the way to 90 naked with just a level 1 main-hand; far as I can tell, they changed it so quick venture XP is the same no matter what they return with.

Edit: Plus, some expeditions need a certain gear score.

All you really need with retainers leveling up is gathering. You can probably find the NQ gear from NPCs and stick some cheap guerdon materia on it. Don't upgrade the gear until it tells you that your gathering is too low to do ventures.

Yes, but for leveling you aren't going to be hunting for rare items so you might as well just use quick ventures, which require no gear as far as I know. Then when your retainer reaches max level, you can farm them a scrip set.

The real question is why do crafters get a snazzy new waistcoat that doesn't have an unmatchable brown pattern slapped on while combat gear is just a bunch of reused assets.

That's it, I'm challenging Yoshi-P to a Hell in a Cell Ladder match.

Do all these tips apply to the retainer I made a combat class? Just give random gear to up gearscore?

Pretty much yes, just get the minimum you need to run the ventures you want (which is none for a quick venture but I don't like having to babysit them every hour). At level 50, and every 10 levels thereafter, I'd grab poetics gear (there's vendors in the starter cities for the level 50 tomestone gear now).

Yeah, better gear helps with some of the ventures, but of the ones I've seen none of them are that steep. Until they're max level, the tomestone gear will blow the requirements out of the water. ...And even at max level too, just it can take a touch longer.

For combat class retainers all that matter is ilvl of the gear, so don't waste money on HQ gear for them.

For your combat retainers, ilvl is all that matters.
For your gathering retainers, all that matters is the gathering score. (Which means that gathering accessories - which only have GP - are worthless; but gathering materia is not.)
You'll need to hit some threshold to be allowed to do the 18-hour ventures at all; beyond that, there's another one for "better results" - though often they aren't really all that better, just different.
Don't stress too much about gear til you get your retainer to 90.

Uhh.... why's everyone saying Gathering is the only important stat for retainers? Gathering is what you need at a minimum to hit the requirements, yes, but you need Perception if you want bonus yields.
