How would you make each healer dps rotation unique?

So a common sentiment going around is that healers need a more engaging dps rotation other than spamming 1 spell and 1 DoT. How would you go about differentiating how each healer plays in a way that gives them leeway to pause their rotation in the event they need to heal?

As a bonus given the recent healer-less EX trials, is there a mechanic you could introduce that would allow healer dps to at least match tank dps in the event that there's literally no healing to be done while also not hampering your ability to immediately switch back to casting heals (No cleric stance as it existed)?


Edit: Actually getting a lot of suggestions around here so I may as well just go ahead with mine.

General:

-Add the instant ability Aethercharge as a role action. Aethercharge costs 1000 MP and can only be used while above 90% MP. Aethercharge increases the damage of the next X filler spells by Y potency. Filler spells being Glare/Broil/Holy/etc...

This is a similar concept to Seraph Strike from Bozja, but constrained in a way where you can't accidentally sabotage all of your healing potential. This is basically just an MP dump whenever you aren't casting anything other than filler spells.


White Mage
-Simple builder spender system like how Lilies build into Afflatus Misery. Casts build a gauge which lets you cast another ability.
-Spender comes with a small Medica effect like a GCD Assize.


Scholar
-More DoTs whose timers don't line up so you have to keep conscious track of each different one.
-Easily replaceable ground targeted DoT so you have to keep track of when the boss moves
-DoTs build up to Ruin IV for builder/spender cash out dopamine.



Astrologian
-Make Astrodyne feel more impactful.
-Astrodyne is now a damaging ability that generates 15% MP.
-With 3 of the same or 3 different seals, Astrodyne deals major Single target damage to the target.
-With 2 of the same and 1 different seal, Astrodyne deals major AoE damage around the target. Potency is 70% of the ST version



Sage
-Uses fast burst windows like MCH and RPR. Does not use DoTs like other healers to shift power into this window.
-Phlegma generates Addersting to enable burst window. Eukrasian Dosis consumes Addersting to initiate burst window. Toxicon is now an ogcd ability that's constantly weaved inside of burst window.
-Burst window is very short and increases healing output by virtue of triggering Kardia more often.



Outside of SGE's mini burst windows (that still improve healing output in a roundabout way), all of these are designed to be unobtrusive or complement what healers currently have and give each healer plenty of leeway to drop whatever their doing and spam their version of Medica for when their party just can't stop getting hit by mechanics. The healer that would otherwise be the most penalized, White Mage, even has their dps system spam Medica for them.

A simple diet coke BLM rotation for WHM for example. You can make aero work similarly to Thunder, AoE version that doesnt stack, stance change button, stone 1 & water 1 for single target, stone 2 and water 2 for AoE. Make stone and water spells be the same button based on stance to reduce bloat. change free cure to proc off of Water spells and reward a lily. holy can be your foul equivalent. At the same time move lillies down into ARR level range and build their healing kit around it so a WHM's MP economy is mostly used for DPS while lillies give plethora MP-free heals. Yes its still a 1 button rotation but having stuff to micromanage makes it better to play.

As for AST honestly just copying dancer with their RNG feather procs and card themed standard and technical staps sounds most fitting rn but i also toyed with the idea of making a card themed Ninjutsu from NIN.

SCH will be a little difficult since the current iteration of Arcanist doesnt fit SCH gameplay at all. Maybe make it a dot themed class with Bio Miasma etc. Kinda like bard, with tacticts skills that proc off of dots.

How about instead of turning healers into pseudo DPS jobs, we instead boost the frequency of unavoidable damage.

Second boss in Panda has been absolute blast to heal specifically because pugs fail mechanics regularly along with consistent frequent unavoidable damage.

I barely have the GCDs spare to drop my Dot on the boss, let alone be upset at spamming Dosis.

The only time we healers are "spamming our 1 button" is in groups that never fail mechanics and have good coordination.

We need the content to put our entire healing kit, including GCD heals, to use throughout an entire encounter.
We only get reduced to spamming our single DPS button for any length of time when the fight is fully optimized/overgeared.

What made scholar fun in ARR is they had numerous dots that you weren't just ruin spamming while managing their uptime, so perhaps spell 1 is a spam spell, spell 2,3, and 4 are all on cooldowns perhaps 3, 5, and 7 seconds respectedly and best dps rotation is keeping them all on cd while healing. More og scholar feel

You're not wrong but at this point they'd have to overhaul the encounterdesign of 8 years worth of content and I just don't see that happening so giving us more to do than just 1 button spamming is the easiest fix they could do rn.

I would start by removing the entire DPS Kit. DO keep in mind that any Potency mentioned are just estimations on my part.

Now that we have a clean slate, i would inpliment the following Spells for Scholar (do note that i am using FFXI names as a placeholder name for "new" abilities):

Scholar (seperated from Arcanist and now its own Job):
-Aetherflow removed (Healing Spells that require Aetherflow will simply become OGCD Spells with multiple charges) and replaced by "Grimoire". Grimoire will work as follows, using it allows you to change your "stance" towards Light and Dark aspected Skills. This Skill will come at a reasonable CD and will lock you for a limited time towards one stance but can be changed in combat.
- Basic Spell attack: (Light) Broil I-IV low potency, instantcast, has a chance do deal double damage. (Dark) Dark I-IV high potency, long cast time for arround 3 sec, also applies heavy 50% for 20sec.
- Spell #2: (Light) Poison I-IV applies Poison to target for 1 Minute, arround 50 Potency every 3sec. (Dark) Miasma I-IV 150 potency and applies a Dot with 100 Potency/every sec arround Caster which lasts 10sec
- Utility (Light) Sacred Soil, as it is, but grants movement speed instead of HoT. (Dark) Shadowflare deals 50 potency damage every 3sec to all who enter it and applies Heavy 50% (doesnt stack with Dark I-IV)
- Bane: (Light) 200 Potency 3sec cast time, 400 damage aganist Enemies suffering from Heavy (Dark) spreads DoTs/debuffs to nearby targets (only own ones)
- Seraph removed, instead, SCH gets a Skill called Tabula Rasa, which allows Eos to use the next Light aspected Skill or Selene the next Dark aspected Skill, costs 50 Fairy Gauge
- Energy Drain: now grants 100 Fairy Gauge on use. deals 250 Damage instantly and restores Mana, with arround 60-90sec CD
- Virus: Deals arround 100-150 Potency damage for every debuff applies to a enemy (only from SCH), if the target dies to the Skill, it jumps to another nearby target (120-180sec CD), 2,5sec cast time.
- Fey Teleport: 5sec cast time, Switches position with summoned Fairy (dunno how much CD would be fair for this tbh, but id say it should be 60sec)
- Libra: changes your Grimoire into the opposite Element, 2 charges and 60sec CD, instant use.

Note: Eos and Selene should be reworked for this the following way: Eos stays as is, but Selene applies the "low Shield" which Seraph did instead of regular Heals. Also, Selene should grant haste with Fey illumination again and a 150 Potency single target attack that applies Paralyze instead of Whispering Dawn.

Fairies should also become targetable and killable again, and this time with proper Defense values. If Squeenix can design NPC's for Bozja for fates to fight alongside players, they this should be a piece of cake.

Personally output wise id suggest healers should be 20% less than dps, just like tanks being 20% less. So tanks/healers do 40% of the party's damage and dps doing 60% (each individual t/h does 10% each dps does 12%)

As for rotations thats easy.

Sch can be dot mage once more. Broil, miasma, miasma 2, bio, shadowflare, bane, art of slap, fester, energy drain

Whm can have a version of its stolen self buffing. An elemental combo that has water/stone/aero and has a burst that deals light damage.

Astro can have a 2 or 3 part proc system and an action that triggers from playing cards. This action starts off a little mudra esque thing where you read the enemy's fate and do a damaging move to them.

Sage gets a couple of changes to its existing one button dps mechanics, then gets to have more addersting generators and a combo. You can use eukrasia to make something akin to hw/sb dark arts. The effects will be various debuffs on the target.

for SCH would add another Dot and put fester like ability on the Fae gauge as a cost of 20 and its a 30 second GCD cd with no cast time
and change ruin 2 animation

WHM should have a combo like system for spells somewhat a spiritual successor of Black mage cycling through fire and ice,
cast glare gain buff which lets you cast a stronger version of Stone casting stone will increase strength of next Glare etc etc.
Each successful "combo" would give you one Blood Lilly so you can proc misery through damage and not healing and just take misery off the Lilly gauge,
letting you save two misery similar to BLM polyglot and so it doesn't feel like such a DPS loss using misery and be a nicer movement tool.

Give SCH 3 dots + an ability to consume the dots, dealing full potency of all applied dots on a target, during burst phase.

AST needs a 1-2-3 combo with a flashy finisher, all on hard GCDs so as not to mess with cards on oGCDs.

WHM needs a dot + 1-2 combo with some resource mechanic and a finisher.

SGE gets a 1-2-3 combo that gives an Addersgall and a single-target finisher that uses 3 Addersgall.

SCH> Dots Galore.
WHM> Pure nuker. More flat DPS skills.
SGE> Small DPS in multiple healing skills (or vice versa) / death by a thousand cuts
AST> DPS buffer (lowest personal DPS of all healers but most team DPS)

Just give us scholars at least Miasma, and Bane back. It was so fun when you could spread around dots with Bane!

I'm thinking something similar as well but have the stance also turns our healing skills into their Lily Equivalent. So Cure 2 into Afflatus Solace, Medica into Afflatus Rapture and Afflatus Misery takes over Holy. This makes room for Afflatus versions of Medica 2, Cure 3, and a Single Target version of Misery to take over Glare. Essentially make Cleric Stance into Eukrasia and have Aero be WHM's version of Thunder and WHM would be fine.

I would give SCH a % chance for Ruin IV procs (up to 2 stacks stored) from DoT ticks.

I would like to start off with saying I LOVED scholar's dps kit in HW. And I know a lot of people mention bringing dots back and such, but I don't think I would want exactly the old stuff just readded due to how bloated my hotbars are now. I think I'd want something inspired by SMN's whole spell replacement mechanic. Perhaps after using Energy Drain, it gives a couple stacks of a resource to use an upgraded Broil/Biolysis/Art of War. Biolysis could be upgraded into another unique DoT. Broil could also give another unique dot, or perhaps a very small defense debuff on the target. Art of War could be upgraded into an aoe defense debuff or become an aoe DoT. Also I'd love for Energy Drain to finally do aoe damage even if it has falloff. And remove the aetherflow cost from Energy Drain and turn it (preferably) into a charged action.

Next is something I wouldn't expect until a new expansion, but I'd enjoy a different approach to Dissipation. I'd like to keep the whole "eat your fairy" mechanic but have it visually and mechanically enhance the Scholar. Our DPS kit and healing kit would use a lot of fairy-themed animations. Potencies would be increased, obviously an increase to oGCD healing abilities. I don't have anything too specific in mind, but it'd be nice to see party buffs be involved somehow. Maybe a dissipation-enhanced Biolysis goes from being a DoT to a short aoe attack buff that needs to be kept up (maybe recasted after every 2-4 broils or something). And aetherflow used during Dissipation would also add to fey gauge for once.

For me, this would cater towards my love of the old DoT healer Scholar used to be. And with Sage being White Mage's parallel as the selfish dps healer, I think these changes would properly make Scholar Astrologian's parallel as the supportive healer. Because using Chain Stratagem once every 2 minutes isn't doing it for me, and I don't think I'd be much happier with charges or a shorter recast time. And obviously, assume all of these potencies would be rebalanced to acceptable levels. :^)

Sch: Dot mage and aetherflow centric job, reward the using of the aetherflow button with dps gains as well as the use of its heals

Whm: Afflatus+ Blm lite job, give limited ways to nourish the blood lily without dps loss (an attack instant cast cd that nourish it i.e) to make the blood lily a dps gain on single target, give better returns to its heals in maybe a buff to the next spell used or an ogcd attack as well as a longer cast harder hitting dps action that can be used only after using certain amount of glares (3 or 4) to break the 1 button monothony.

Ast: Extra dot + ways to modify and give more buffs to the party as well as manage more the cards they get (havent thought much of this as I have to try the EW ast)

Sge: expand the eukrasia system with variants to dyskrasia, toxicon and phelgma as well as add ways to accelerate the cds of their gcd attacks, grant more addersting actions so they become dps gains (some more limited than others or even combos or a bane like effect) and increase the ways to generate addersting without relying on the gcd shields

Some fantastic suggestions in this thread already but I'd like to give my input on sage:

1. Remove addersting, have toxickon cost addersgall and be off the gcd and give MP. It's clunky the way it is currently requiring a shield break and being dps neutral despite that. This way, it gives a way to burn addersgall when you dont need a heal and lets you not get behind in MP regen.
2. Rework Pneuma into a 10 second CD that heals all targets with kardion, increasing for each target hit. The base heal potency will be slightly larger than a normal kardion heal, to be used when burst heals are needed. This also makes pneuma more impactful and a core part of the kit.
3. Rework phlegma to be off the gcd and have a 25 yard range. E. Dosis gives a chance proc a charge of phlegma. Potency will of course need to be lowered to compensate. This lets phlegma be the filler spell I think it's trying be now but better (imo).
3. Have prognosis and diagnosis (non-eukrasian) apply kardion to the target for a few seconds, while reducing the potency of both direct heals for balance. Diagnosis will apply kardion for longer than Prognosis since its single target. This puts an emphasis on the 'dps healer' playstyle of sage by having kardia be more impactful.
4. Pepsis becomes more akin to emergency tactics. Removes the kardion application from diag and prog but boosts it's base potency. Lets you spam heals viably in a pinch, like ET.
5. Combine krasis + phsysis, and Zoe + Holos. Maybe make Panhaima into Eukrasian Haima. The goal here is just to reduce button bloat and the clunk from its healing kit, which I think will lower the skill floor a bit, which is needed. Potencies and cooldowns will need to be massively adjusted of course but I think its necessary.

The goal is to have a core rotation, in this case Dosis, E. Dosis, Phlegma, and Pneuma all funnel in to the kardia mechanic, and giving more ways to apply kardia. Which I believe doubles down on the theme for the job, the quote 'healer with DPS options'. The reduction in button bloat would make the job more intuitive to newer players and the expanded core rotation would be engaging enough for veteran players.

It allows you to detonate the shields when you need the heal, rather than deciding you want to the shields to give extra health upfront and find you've wasted it because your co-healer turned out to be on-the-ball and got people's health up.
5. I'd be against the idea of combining these, am I always going to do Krasis + Physis and Zoe + Holos? Haima and Panhaima have separate cooldowns and have a separate use although the effect is practically identical. Haima is useful when the tank is taking repeated incoming damage (or a non-tank) and Panhaima is where the party does and normally they'd be separate mechanics in a fight that they're useful for. I honestly don't feel that there's bloat, I like that I feel busy, it's what I've been asking for.

I completed a run of the Tower of Babil about an hour ago. Only after reading this comment did I realize I never once used Seraph during that run. Even with heavy pulls from the tank, who was a Warrior I might add, I completely forgot I even had the ability.

They'd have to do a lot more work in order to make this viable. You'd have to buff healer MP economy since instead of the 400 minimum that Healers do with their DPS spells, you're now looking at, on average, 700-1k, depending on the healer (why they all have different costs is beyond me) While AST might be able to slip on by, that might not necessarily be true for the other healers. It's much easier to just add a DPS skill or 2 to healers and be done with it.

I think it's a case of both really.

We definitely need more unavoidable raid damage and harder hitting boss autos to give us more purpose than babysitting prog groups through mistakes. There's a middle ground between going several minutes without unavoidable damage and having to spam GCD heals non-stop. Encounters just don't do enough damage.

However, at the same time, they have to acknowledge some downtime is inevitable in the long run. As our groups get better, we get better at heal planning, we get better gear and we map out mitigation, we end up needing to heal less. So we need a filler for that downtime too.

So basically, we need a bit more unavoidable damage to heal and more engaging dps.

Let’s be clear, they don’t need 1-2-3

No caster or ranger should ever have something so boring that they don’t need to be close to the target. They need to all be lite versions of current casters and rangers much like how tanks are lite versions of melee

The bigger mechanics of the rangers are procs, dots, and rng and shouldn’t be difficult what so ever to even have Glare proc something now and again, SCH can utilize the dots SMN lost, AST can have more offensive spells unlocked by cards, and SGE can explore its toxicon skills more or have a basic 1-2 following Dosis

SCH: Broil, Biolysis and Miasma with different timers, Bane. Energy Drain gets a new animation and AoE damage. Ruin II becomes Kaustra after every Aetherflow usage with 3 charges. Instacast and same potency as Broil. Higher potency when used on targets afflicted with Biolysis and Miasma, 50% AoE fall off damage.

SGE: Dosis and E. Dosis are the same, Dyskrasia gets an eukrasian version which applies an AoE dot (doesn't overwrite E. Dosis, different timer). Phlegma grants a buff that makes the next Toxicon you use more powerful, which is now an oGCD.

AST: Star gauge is added, a star lights up every time you play a card on the correct role, up to three. When three stars are available, changes Divination to Declination after use, an AoE attack. Enables one use of Card Converter, which converts the minor arcana you are currently holding to the other version.

For WHM, they really shouldn't have deleted Fluid Aura. Simply rework the spell to an oGCD that upgrades to Water III and Water IV, which are spells that already exist in the game. Give it multiple charges too while you are at it. Also, get rid of the Free Cure trait and include a new trait that involves procing Aero II/Dia with Aero III/Tornado. Aero III/Tornado will still be the AoE DoT that everyone remembers, but can only be cast if proc from Aero II/Dia's DoT timer.

Scholar:

Have Scholar handle managing multiple poison DoTs again with a timer reset ability that can be used on one or multiple enemies.

Give it a ranged AoE attack that, alongside Broil, two spells damage increased the more an enemy(s) has poison DoTs attached to them.

Let us spread our DoTs to multiple enemies again and also bringing back our old AoE DoT attack.

So basically DoT Mage.

I agree with this sentiment but it does nothing for previous encounters that have already been designed. Unfortunately the answer cannot be to increase emergencies within encounters unless we’re talking “Unreal” content. The way they have made this game is to make even the newest encounters do-able in a casual sense unless it’s savage or unreal. Once people understand the mechanics, healing becomes an afterthought. Even if the rate of unavoidable damage went up, it would have to be ALOT more to warrant a dedication to nothing but healing in a fight. So much so that what should be causally comfortable becomes frustrating for the unskilled.

My spitballing thoughts to encourage dps.
I can only speak on whm cause that's my main and I don't have an intricate enough headspace for the others.

-move affaltus solus to an earlier level (let's say 36) to smooth them out
-change freecure to the following

*Trait: Natural Flow (lvl 32)
'Whenever you successfully cast a spell, there is a 15% chance to gain the "Flow" buff for 15 seconds. While under the effect of Flow , Aero/Aero II transforms into "Flood"'.Flood consumes the Flow buff.

The chance is doubled when using an 'afflatus' spell.

Thoughts for the changes
- Gives a new dps skill without increasing button bloat
- encourages the use of the lily Guage and gives a lily spender (only available if overflow is happening to prevent the encouragement of just using lilies for damage)
- a bit of mana to help with WHMs lacking mp regen options.
-make sure it's not focused as this could be scholars tool, instead focusing on strong Gcd spells

Any extra DPS ability should be weighted against resources, MP and cast time in a way where finding the time and resources to cast it rewards the healer's careful planning.

I'd say give each healer a very expensive, long cast time spell, either dot, or direct damage, that prevents them form weaving anything in it and requires to stay stationary for a while-

(In case of AST for example, rather than a damaging spell it could be a short lived single target buff)

I would rather increase difficulty so healers are required instead of making them pure DPS with healing abilities. Right now you only heal group wide AoEs and tank busters. Anything more is generally dps being vuln sponges.
Ideally I think WHM would be pure healer with few attacks, holy aoe stun, aerora aoe dot, and maybe stone with a chance to proc cure2 or stoneskin if they're feeling spicy.
SCH would primary have dots so they can focus on micromanaging their fairy and positioning shields.
AST would have more aoe star explosions so they could focus on an expanded pokemon deck instead of match the colors. (Buff other dps instead of directly doing it)
SGE would pull out a gun and have the real dps combo system that heals.
Thats my ideal setup. More about choose your own playstyle rather than everyone has to max deeps or die.

One of the issues I see that make WHM bland is the spell effects. Most of the spell effects are now bluish white. Black mage got to keep its identity with the elements instead of turning all its spell effects purplish black.

I really, really want Aero 3 back. I miss it so much. I also wouldn't mind the Afflatus Rapture and Solace to be on a charge system and free up the lily system. The lily system can now have specific lilies that are dedicated to earth, wind and water misery spells that charge up when using those spells. Glare type spells would be earth suspected, Dia and an AoE Dia would be wind aspected and spells like aquaveil and divine benison would charge up the water aspected misery spell when the ally takes damage under the spell effects. Holy/Holy 3 would charge up all the lillies but at a lower rate.

Afflatus Misery (blood lily) would require each of the earth, wind, water misery lilies to be used to charge it up.

You can change the glare, dia and holy with earth, wind and water misery spells once the lily is achieved so you don't need to add more buttons.

You can adjust damage numbers to make it more balanced.

I never post on the forums, but I wanted to throw something out there for WHM. Sorry I am on mobile.

1. Dia/Aero I/II Dot trigger Lily blooms every 20-30 seconds they are active. Only one dot can trigger this, multiple enemies will not accelerate charge speed.
2. Liturgy of the Bell (LotB) is a buff gained after using Afflatus Misery. The buff allows you to cast LotB, it does not expire unless the spell is cast, and this buff will not stack, so if it isn't used before the next Misery you will miss one use etc.
3. LotB keeps its healing, but now also triggers a lowish potency attack per stack used, or accumulated damage if some stacks remain. AOE dmg, ofcourse.
4. A spell with charges similar to Pneuma, 2 charges max. 1 Charge at lower level. This could be old Aero III and upgrade to some light themed AOE dot. The DOT time is less than the charge recharge time.
5. Misery potency increases when Glare upgrades to III. Should at least be 10 potency above the accumulated Glare potencies not used to make it a gain and not a loss.

Just some of my thoughts, I'm not too into potencies and what-not.

It isn't just the Dps aspect thats bad on Healers. They need a complete rework, if you want any decent changes that arent just placebo Skills or Job traits taken from other Jobs (like OP suggestion on AST, which is just the same thing on how MNK currently works with its finisher).

After playing most healers to 90 (WHM is almost there) I think having a second ability on 30 sec really helps break the monotony. AST feels ridiculously busy and part of it is due to having their DoT and cards on 30 sec cooldown. SGE has Phlegma on 45 sec. WHM does have Assize on 45 sec, but it feels egregiously boring due to a lack of ogcds.

I was thinking SGE might be fine. Maybe add an ogcd dps ability.

SCH: Gains an ability that increases the the direct hit rate against the target for 8 sec on a 30 sec cooldown. It’s not a DoT, but functionally is while retaining something similaresque to Chain Stratagem.

WHM: Thin Air is now on a 30 sec recharge, keeps the 2 charges. Thin Air boosts the potency of your next spell in addition to reducing its MP cost by 75%. Boosts next heal magic potency by 20%, boosts, boosts spell potency damage by 10%. Essentially, the WHM is *the* “GCD healer”. Fine SE, but should have their kit be based around supporting their GCD gameplay with various buffs (such as Temperance, Presence of Mind, or PI). And please boost Afflatus Misery’s damage so that Lily heals are incentivized.

As for a serious answer: Double down on the Eukrasia gimmick for sage, give WHM a miniature black mage rotation, Make Scholar Aff Lock Again, and just leave Astro as is.

AST deserves to have at least Lord/Lady of Crowns reworked in the way it used to be in Stormblood, as a alternative way of playing regular Cards (and more card effect variety).

As for the rest of the Healers except SCH: remove the stupid DoTs and replace them with something else, like a 10sec OGCD instant Spell, a tether that does dmg, multi hit spells or anything that isnt a generic damage Skill.

I'd actually welcome a DoT-less healer. Sage has no DoT till level 30 and its hilarious how strong Dosis I is to compensate for that.

How so? The last time I was thrown into ARR dungeon my Dosis I tooltip shows that it has 180 potency, not unlike some player who I’d seen spouting that it has 300 potency from lv1 till its upgrade to Dosis II.
