Railing against WoW and its community is a form of toxicity, too. They're just MMO players, too.
As a fellow WoW refugee, I wonder the same. People on the forums are so angry and toxic about the most minor of issues. First world MMO problems really. They don't know how good they got it here.
Example. There was a thread a week or so ago complaining hardcore about the way dye looked on a certain piece of gear...oh to be able to dye your gear at all is like a dream lol.
Nah, it's always been bad, BUT... yeah it's worse now.
And I don't think other mmo players are solely to blame, lack of moderation and the current end times we live don't help.
There are toxic people on here like everywhere else but the silent majority are not toxic and chose not to engage in the madness. Please do not take people seriously, there are really nice and kind people here.
People are just upset over queue times and disconnects. Most are just venting. I'll save judgement on the forums when login times go back to normal.
I posted this in another thread, so I shall just copy and paste it here since it is relevant:
To add to that, I also think it's rather disingenuous to try and blame WoW players for 'toxicity'. From what I've seen, it's often the feigned concern for the 'toxicity' bogeyman that is in itself far more toxic than anything put forth by the supposed 'opposition.'
This forum is to the FFXIV community what /b/ is to the internet.
The forums only represent a minority amongst the XIV populace. I'd wager that the majority of us aren't toxic.
Yes, the fact that the forums are currently so "toxic" is the fault of WoW players and not the fault of SE who released a mediocre expansion that the majority of the players cannot even play due to SE's crappy servers. It's definitely the fault of WoW players.
People have to remember that these forums are for a very small minority when it comes to the actual community. A lot of players don't even look at these forums let alone post on them.
Forums are normally pretty chill. It just gets toxic when something happens and people start to voice their opinion and the Warriors of Square arm up to defend SE.
What exactly classifies someone posting as toxic? I’ve seen it from every side. Whether it’s people crapping on the game, or people defending the game. It’s not necessarily WoW players. It’s not really any identifiable group of people. It’s people who merely express their opinion in a matter others take to heart in a negative manner.
I’ve seen “toxic” trolls. But I’ve also seen “toxic” people who believe they are the righteous defenders of the game, the community, or some principle.
Offence is taken, not given
Speaking from personal experience this place has ALWAYS been a toxic wasteland
The forums have always been like this. Anyone that thinks otherwise or wants to blame the WoW community clearly hasn't spent much time on the forums. The vocal minority spends a lot of time here complaining and always have since the forum's inception.
It has had the odd bump in the road in the past with a heated topic or two, BUT, I'd say it has nothing to do with the WoW players joining, it's more anger aimed at the company and it's failings.
Ofc, it doesn't help that the white knights are fanning the flames of the players that can't play, it shows a toxic side of players in this game that I've never seen in 7+ years, the "I'm alright Jack, I've got my play time, FU!" white knighting.
There has always been fanboys & girls but this is another level lately.
toxic how?
I concur. I've been lurking here for years and the majority of that time I would say that the overall mood here has been negative, pessimistic and unpleasant.
There are some engaging and constructive conversations here and there to be sure, but too infrequent to call a common occurence.
Those times sorta make up for the stagnant swamp we call the forums.
And this place is a tiny fraction of the base. In game players have been way more upbeat and positive than most people here.
Quite a few people on the forums have always been condescending. They literally wait for you to mis-word something or get your facts slightly wrong so they have an excuse to jump down your throat.. It's always been that way on forums in general though. So no, it's always been like this.
What doesn't help the matter is the que times, a lot of people are just angry because they don't really relish the thought of spending a monthly subscription to sit in a que for 5 hours during peak times. A lot of people work so can't avoid the rush hour unless they wait until midnight on a weekday.
No, it's not the players from WoW causing the issues. Right now it's a toxic minority who are so upset that they can't get into the game and wanting to blame the company and badmouth it to kingdom come instead of accepting the server issues and either waiting in queue, or waiting until the server congestion calms down.
nah this is the true nature of the ffxiv community since the beginning, you dont see it ingame very often but these forums have almost no moderators so they can go nuts without repercussions
Define "toxic" because this is such a banalized word that at this point doesn't really mean anything. If anything, this forum has always been quite dramatic but what forum isn't? Imo the lack of moderation of this one shows, given we have troll/bait and repetitive threads all the time.
That being said, I do wish people stopped blaming WoW or whatever for any sort of thing they dislike in the game or the community. I already said this, but it's amazing how WoW lives rent-free in the mind of a % of FFXIV's community, it's almost like people that play FFXIV are sort of obsessed with it in a way or another (I don't even mean this targetting at you OP, but more of a rant after giving the forums a quick glance).
its always been this way. Vocal minority.... and 95% of the time negatively biased
welcome to literally any forum centred around a game
What toxicity exactly? All I see are people upset at the state of the queues and client crashes which are legitimate complaints. People have been very constructive with their feedback. Outside of this most of the feedback has been how good the expansion is or armor sets.
Are there any moderators? I have noticed a lot of trolling, and baiting and lack of civil discourse. Yeah I know It's the internet one might say. However, On the ESO forums when things get out of hand the mods are very quick to step in. I don't think I have ever seen so much as warning or locked post.
If it's not 100% positive praising, it's apparently considered toxic. Criticism - of any kind - toxic. I don't see anything too wrong with the regular community here on the forums, and prefer it to other social media outlets, such as twitter, or reddit. Outside of that, this is an expansion launch, with no few issues. What we are seeing now is a given.
I'm surprised too, because if you're a regular that has been here since the opening on these forums...
You would know that these forums are strict and give permabans fast on the smallest of stuff. Like being permabaned for saying "Housing is the S word."
Yup, that's me. But now I see people saying bad words and they still post.
Sure wish my main could post in 2021 lol.
To make a thread asking - Has this Forum always be so toxic or is it only now that FF14 got all the WoW players .... and then say it was not my intent... just sounds like trolling to me. -_- This is part of the problem honestly. Why make a thread to argue about it and complain about players that will not change?
Because sadly, many people cannot internally deal with their frustrations and instead have to make it a campaign. It's a place to vent essentially.
Plus the like function. It gives people a dopamine hit so they keep coming back to generate more negativity and so on.
Yes.
Yes it has. Back in HW, if you didn't prostrate in front of your yoshi-p statue and praise the game you got reported into oblivion and banned.
Toxic positivity is also disgusting.
don't feel bad.
these forums are really not that toxic. if you look at the all the threads, their titles and replies, there really isn't that much whining, and even then, folks like you, are quite decent about it all, especially considering the mess created by the plague and the semiconductor shortage. if you compare these little kerfuffles to what is posted on the wow forums or the aion forums or, gods forbid, the old lineage2 forums, these forums are truly well-behaved and, for the most part, considerate of everyone involved.
we all need a little giggle right now, and I do have to say, some of those other forums were really good for a great big WOOHAA...wonder what the new age forums are like right now? I'd go look but really don't want to contribute to any numbers for the game; same reason I don't go and snicker over the wow forums...not giving them anything, not even my attention. I'd rather count my queue numbers in this game than amuse myself over there...:P
one thing I DID do to amuse myself was to search "semi-conductor shortage"; the results are quite surprising...makes everything so much clearer.
People don't have problems with constructive criticism or people asking for updates on the server without coming across as rude. People have problems with those who come in here just to be negative for the sake of being negative, screaming at the top of their lungs for refunds, badmouthing and spamming negativity in general. That is toxic as hell and is not something anybody wants to see or deal with. Being too positive, likewise, can also be annoying and can get toxic, especially during a time like now when we're having server congestion and issues daily at prime time.
Short answer. No, it hasn't.
Whether it be official forums or subreddits.
They're toxic as hell, it tends to attract the worst people you'll never meet ingame or who are too scared of getting banned who won't act like this ingame.
