oh! The 10,000 polygon flowerpots...
Sure were pretty though..
they should revert to the FF7 original graphics where everyone has square arms
Until ( if ever ) they upgrade the engine or make a new one ( unlikely ) i don't think is gonna get much better.
What are you going on about, OP? The graphics in this game are far, far from outdated. The only graphical-related problem are some lower quality textures (mostly occuring within armour). It would be nice to see that fixed, yes, but the graphics are far from outdated.
Yoshi P commented before that at 6.0's release they would contemplate this but right now there's obviously a lot of other priorities going on. They also seem to be behind schedule by quite a bit so this is pretty far off their radar I'm sure. BUT with every patch they make improvements. Unfortunately they cannot update the textures without remaking them from scratch because 4k textures weren't even a conceivable thing when this game released. Even to this day it isn't for cross-platform support but that doesn't mean PC can't have that option one day. FF11 has a mod where someone used machine learning to upscale every texture to 4k or something like that. I never played FF11 but I did see the demo and it was pretty amazing and took the modder a couple of years to achieve.
The game looks fine as it is though, it may not have call of duty graphics but that doesn't matter. Maybe should they decide on the next FF MMORPG, they will have FF7R-like graphics but it won't be for this game. Adding features like raytracing does seem like an option though.
I would prefer if the games graphics only had a HQ modification. I wouldn’t play if it ended up looking like FF-7, my computer would 100% not be able to handle it.
I also love how the game’s *style* looks too. FF-7R is a specific style, and much more different than this style. It’s actually closer to something like BDO.
They said that a graphic update if any would happen after 7.0 at the earliest if they were planning to do one which we don't know if they are or not.
Thank you for actually being knowledgeable about 1.0 unlike 99% of individuals who shit on it without understanding why it failed but instead only parrot bull crap they read on the internet.
Anyone defending this game's graphics is partially or completely blind, the game is 10+ year old rubbish, it was designed for PlayStation 3 at best, we are on PlayStation 5 time and we definitely need better graphics.
I don't know if most players like square or triangular limbs and butts, just look at the characters with their low-polygon count, they look really bad, only the face looks good, everything else is PS2/3 quality.
Unless many players complain about the graphics Square Enix will not move a finger to upgrade the game's "visual quality".
Upscaling textures is a poor method, we have seen over and over in older games, they look just slightly better but not enough to deserve praising.
We can definitely have FF7R quality models and graphics, they can find solutions to keep a good framerate without sacrificing visual quality but in their money making greed they won't bother as long as they continue to sell as much as they want.
At the very least an OPTIONAL HD texture pack is way overdue.
If they ever do an upgrade, I hope it isn't until they end support for PS4 and the myriad of toasters people play this game on so that they aren't as hampered by low specifications. Which is to say, in several years at minimum, and well beyond when the chip shortage is finally over.
This, while mostly true, is a little deceptive in delivery. Did WoW raise system requirements when expansions came out? Yes, yes they did, but not in any sort of significant way, or in a way that would affect performance meaningfully. From 2010 until 2020 I played on the same pre-built PC, and I upgraded the graphics card once, and that was in 2014. Even before the GPU upgrade, I got relatively equivalent performance in every WoW expansion in that time frame. So this idea that WoW demanded a better PC every expansion, while strickly speaking true, is not an accurate depiction.
I guess its because unlike OP i played 1.0 and it was really bad. Performance, network code, UI, JP only servers, no content i can go on and on. But performance was really bad and i am glad they are prioritizing gameplay over pretty graphics. That being said there are ways to improve graphics without ruining performance such as better lighting and high res textures, because unlike poly count ppl with potato PCs can turn them down.
The Kadomatsu from hell. approaching this thing would overheat my PC.

Just download and use GShade in the mean time.
There are graphic settings lol people with potato's can still play even if the quality is increased unless SE decides to remove the potato mode. BDO has plenty of settings and so do many other games on PC. Its the consoles that might hold it up if they dont have different settings
They could upgrade engine but make it as optional Custom. You have Ray Tracing, FSR and DLSS too. Cannot force too much graphics because this game is targeted to be more accessible. Those with high end PCs is not majority.
However there still ways to have high detail items with out a lot of polys. There is not tech out there which also means SE would need to update the engine or do massive overhauls and how some games get away with high quality stuff but lowering the poly count is also paint things
You want to lower polygon count even further!?. I think not, just look at this:

I think the graphics are fine as is for an MMO, we just need higher resolution textures. Some of this stuff is blocky and pixelated even at a distance.
A graphic update isn't feasible while the GPU market is heavily inflated in cost due to chip/semi-conductor shortages, and other factors such as monetary system inflation, and competition from crypto. Your average mid-range GPU costs $1000 right now, and this time 3 years ago it would cost half that.
Updating graphics, would turn many players PC's obsolete in a time where GPU acquisition is a more daunting challenge and they'd be pushing their own players out of the game or into a lesser experience.
They could add a new preset too. Maybe Maximum (2022). With a warning for those who does not have the hardware that has enough performance.
^^^
You see reason, this game is very accessible for all kinds of hardware and I don't understand why the graphics quality should be held back.
Let this game have options for everyone, if you want blocky graphics have at them, I want beautiful high-end graphics for my very personal experience.
I feel they could get nice mileage out of the tech side, further improving lighting, special effect system, weather, flora, water, physics in general (with options for things like personal, party, everyone), aa, and such features. There are some particular textures though that are a bit egregious lol (most are fine, but a few are like holy pixel batman). I wonder if they could use AI to accelerate some of those tasks. Most models are pretty good, but I would say character models getting a bit more poly would be neat (though probably one of the most expensive things they could do, depending on if gear needs changed, round as in hands, feet, bum).
I mean some of that does involve more than just 'code', but obviously having to do a pass over the entire game would be rather daunting of a task, meanwhile allowing the engine to produce higher quality results with the same inputs (while still allowing lower resource intensive options) would be nice.
Imagine what this game would look like with unreal engine 5.
i dont think ff14 will ever have huge overhaul graphical upgrade, i remember years ago the dev said that overhaul graphic is impossible because the chaotic spaghetti code in the game.
remember that they salvage this from the original ff14 which already a total chaos and become what we know ff14 now, further graphic update will require something like sega do with their PSO2 => NGS which literally create a whole new game with new engine but allowing the player to transfer their character and 90% of their stuff to the new game.
If they really want to get another 10 years out of this game, they will need to upgrade the graphics sooner than later. If not even an engine update.
What you have to remember is that this game needs to be able to run on consoles and they're not going to go out of their way to do a complete graphical overhaul for PC users only. I love the way this game looks. FFVIIR had framerate issues on the PS4 and is apparently running horribly on most PC's, that's without being an online game with a large amount of player controlled, customisable character models on screen all at once. I would be surprised if the game ever does get a graphical upgrade and should it happen to don't expect some massive RDR2 looking overhaul because it won't happen.
We're more likely to see gradual improvements over a period of time the way blizzard does with WoW. Things like lighting and texture upgrades but I don't see them doing a massive overhaul to this games graphics ever as that is extremely time consuming and expensive.
