You knew this was going to happen

Literally every popular MMO ever made has had first-day or first-week expansion server problems.

All of them.

It's not something you can prevent, because even with stress tests, you have no way of knowing how many people are going to go 'hey, this expansion drops tomorrow? let me buy it real quick.' You can get an idea with stress tests and player counts, but considering that you're not only managing people who left to wait for the next expansion, plus old players coming back, plus the usual playerbase, plus all the WoW players jumping ship, plus all the people seeing news about FFXIV's meteoric rise in popularity and wanting to try it out, plus streamer watchers wanting to play with the streamer...

After a certain point, the number of players becomes literally unknowable.

Square Enix is a business. They want to make money. If you really think they neglected their server capacity in the face of a tsunami of players, knowing the potential outrage, then either you're just wrong, or Square is not so dissimilar to Blizzard than I thought. But either way, an unknowable amount of incoming players is impossible to plan around without an infinite amount of servers.

At a certain point it goes beyond white-knighting and not white-knighting, and just people accepting the truth of the situation and people upset that they have no foresight.

They even warned us that there would be issues as they couldn't procure more server architecture due to the global shortage on super conductors. Nobody should be surprised that a new MMO expansion launch would have issues with server congestion under normal circumstances and this isn't a normal circumstance. The population exploded due to Acti-Blizz treating women like garbage and a global pandemic has screwed up production lines.

Everyone I know has either been playing the game with no issues or has had to fight a bit to get online but have managed to do so.

They clearly knew, they have the figures for the number of pre-release sales, they managed to increase the servers for their "home" Japanese player base which as far far less players than the EU or NA regions which they decided not to upgrade for, even though the majority of the revenue comes from those regions, 100% Squares fault selling more players access to a service there is no way they could provide adequately for

They could of restricted the sales, a time limit etc (they did it a while ago for new players starting the free trail because the player amount was increasing faster than they could provide for) but no they chose to keep accepting the money

I knew this expansion would be busy, of course.

What I didn’t expect was to wait 2-3 hours to get to #15 in the que only to be disconnected then thrown back into #8,500.

I work, I have university coursework too. I don’t have as much free time as everyone else so I’m entitled to be annoyed that I can’t play my favourite game.

not even sure the population exploded, I think a bunch of people came back having not played in a while and cant have been that large pre-order as they only added 1 new server, previous expansions die 2-3.

we lost belts as apparently needed space in code as too many items, yet we have hundreds of items from first 2 expansions not even used, be better if they started to combine new and old in recipes etc rather than think every new patch need endless new items to make items.

TBC Classic didn't.

for hundreds of years slavery was a normal thing. then we evolved to the point we understand its not ok (in the western worlds at last).
when will the MMO player evolve to the point when most will say we are not excepting thins no more?

I work too. Office work, with an hour commute both ways. I will still find time to play the game, and manage not to whine at Square over server issues in the process.

A Japanese company has better optics on Japan than in foreign countries? It's kinda like how American companies have better optics in America than in foreign countries. Oh, except it doesn't matter in that case, because those other countries aren't America. ???

As someone who was there for TBC Classic, it's launch was extremely lukewarm, in the middle of the Blizzard exodus as it was. I wouldn't really call WoW Classic 'popular' anymore.

I don't like pulling the race card, but I'm African American, and that's the most ignorant thing I've ever heard... in an era where Twitter is a thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Square ate a few servers just to inconvenience you personally.

This has got to be the most ignorant and stupidest thing I have ever read. Comparing a game launch with failing log in queues to years of human suffering and atrocities is disgusting. As an African American myself, I truly am at a loss for words.

The situation will get better with time, you just need to adapt accordingly. Does it suck that the log in queues give Error 2002? Yes. Is it fine to feel disappointed about it. Also yes. But screaming at SquareEnix to fix a problem that they've already addressed prior to expansion launch isn't going to help anything, nor is it going to make your queues go faster. They're already giving compensation for the issues, and possibly are going to give more if the errors persist from a week from now. Stop acting like children and take the situation in stride like a grown adult. This isn't defending SquareEnix, as they are a company; but you have to be reasonable too and look at all the problems that contributed to the issues we're having today. And if you have limited time to play, well until the log in servers stabilize, play something else or do something else. It's that simple.

That's the thing, I don't think any of the supposed 'white knights' are even defending Square, they're just trying to stop people from crying that they have to wait an hour to play the most popular MMO on the market right now.
