Damn...that Bastok market model is awesome.

To be on topic I hope the new maps in XIV reflect the detail they put in the XI maps.

Square Enix used to be VERY consistent about giving us awesome storylines in FFXI. And the NPCs were so unique and very well written that you identified with their beliefs...(Lion, Tenzen, Gilgamesh, Aldo, the Chebukki Trio, Serpent General Gadalar, the freaking Ark Angels, the Shikaree X, Y and Z assassin sisters, Prince Luzaf, Lord Excenmille, the campaign generals...and so on)

I have faith that Yoshi-p and his crew will create the next incarnation of stories and heroes in Eorzea or Hydaelyn that we will all eventually grow to love... I'm already a huge fan of my Maelstrom leader, Admiral Merlwyb.

You and quite a few players seem to love the beloved admiral...I love all of the GC npc's so far...just wish the rest of the continent would just wake up alrdy...

lol... I agree with you on that... wish the rest of the continent would finally come alive. I kinda have a feeling Ishgard will have some interesting characters for us. And I like it that we have a kinda clear cut psychopath for a bad guy in Legatus General Darnus

A shame FFXIV will fail to elicit the same feelings 8 years from now. You remember FFXI so fondly because of the struggle that brought you and your friends together. The unspoken, unseen force which held you back at every turn. A constant resistance that gripped you, always on the verge of pushing you stumbling back. The very same force that could be conquered through teamwork and diligence. It gave you reason. It gave you a sense of things. That opposition which you hated vilely on a subconscious level was actually what made you feel like a hero in the end. It made all of it worth the effort.

Which we are lacking a great deal of right now. It may not be a bad interpretation of an MMO as it sits and with the planned changes in 2.0 but we're unlikely to ever get as strong of a connection because of it.

I didn't play FFXI for too long (1.5 years or so), but I remember really enjoying it. My LS helped me get to Rank 10 for my nation(Bastok), but sadly I wasn't able to go back and finish the other story lines... something I might do this summer if I can wrap my head around getting back into the game!

I agree about the nostalgia though, and man, that Bastok model was awesome! I'm not sure how long I'll be playing XIV, but the story or feel of it doesn't match the level of XI, meaning the current XIV story is currently too convoluted for my tastes.

No...thank you all...my hope is that this thread grows and hopefully shows that a game doesn't have to be on the cutting edge of technology or be a 10mil giant to invoke love and passion...XI will always stand to me as a perfect game because even after playing for 7yrs the things I did and saw and the ppl I met created the most awesome environment that can ever be had on the internet...for everything good and bad about it...
I do hope that XIV can do the same in time...

I'd like the devs to watch these, particularly the CoP one. Not that I want them to copy it, but I'd like them to see the standards we expect them to beat. For me CoP was exactly what a final fantasy mmo should be.

I played FFXI for 06 years (2004-2010) and it was the best game i have ever played.
The things i've felt were unique.
I was shaking when i got my Ridill/Ebody, back when it was something to be proud about.

There's always youtube? I know its not the same ... not nearly, but i had to wrap my head around the fact at some point as a casual player i was never going to experience every scene FFXI had to offer ... but i also love that about the game in a way.

Yeah, I think I viewed all of RoZ on youtube, but like you say, it isn't the same at all. People I know who still play the game tell me that much of storyline battles are solo-friendly now since several of the level caps have been removed, that's when I stopped viewing the scenes and became hopeful of going back for a bit to finish off at least the 4 main expansions.

Man, if that happens, it will be like someone has cast nostalgia'ga' on me or something! (bad joke I know)

Actually now is the best time if you wanted to experience the story in FFXI. SE removed all of the cop caps and if you have a maxed job you should be able to blaze through it np(I helped a friend duo it at 85 cap)

Also liked to add that maybe the reason FFXI players have such nostalgia about FFXI is because the world felt real. Every time I logged on it didn't feel like I was playing a game. Felt like I was logging into my second life(and at my prime years it was a second life lol) the world felt real. Mobs had uniqueness to them, traveling to cities(before gathering other modes of transportation) was rough and dangerous. Death was a serious issue. The emphasis on teamwork and needing others helped me form bonds with others. Out of the host of mmo's I've played I've always returned to FFXI because it felt like home. And no it wasn't my first mmo, and yes there were some serious flaws with the game, but the world felt alive. This is how I want FFXIV to make me feel, like the world is alive and doesn't revolve around me.

The main difference between XI and XIV is the greatness. I'll never have the same "greatness" feeling and nostalgia related to our achivements as I did in FFXI.
