[Client Suggestion]File Checker

I have been playing this game since Alpha and have run across a few issues that has rendered the game unplayable due to corrupted patch files. The only fix was to uninstall and reinstall the game. I will list some of the issues I have encountered and some i am encountering now. NOT ALL are gamebreaking but just annoying. :P

~ Unable to enter or travel through certain areas without total client lockdown(freezes picture but you can still here everything going on just fine)

~ Maps appearingly graphically glitched or missing (floors, walls, building, etc missing but the adornments remain)

~ Gear on other players showing up as missing or graphically wrong (for me all Monk AF pants shows up as invisi-legs on miqotes and bright white light pants on other races)

I will include screenshots of these as i run into them in-game.

What I ask for is that we get some sort of File Check that can scan and repair/replace corrupted files so we don't have to reinstall everytime a patch comes out and hope it doesn't screw up along the way.

this would be an awesome thing to have. i know i use it alot when steam games act up and it works wonders and saves hours of time re-downloading the entire thing because of one bad file.

May I ask what OS, and what file system you are using? I have never heard of this problem since beta

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and not sure what you mean by the other one. This problem isn't very common for me I just read about it alot when I was having the issue where anytime I entered Nanawa Mines or ran near Camp Bloodshore my games would start screwing up.

Right now I just get the weird graphical errors with monk AF legs on certain races and the crafter apron.

Either way, most if not all MMOs nowadays and even back in the day have a file check or repair feature. FFXI had it on the POL Viewer(hate that thing) so SE atleast has experience using one just need to figure out how to make one work with XIV pre/post 2.0.

Oh then NTFS, just making sure you weren't using FAT32. And this problem is confirmed to be a corrupt file, or just assumed since reinstalling is the only fix you have found? Then yes they should probably add a file checker. a checker of files. a program that scans each files MD5 hash, and reinstalls the file/s with incorrect MD5s. The reason even very old MMO's did this is its very easy to program to check, and they even have the file distribution in place. My guess why they haven't: ????

There are quite a few graphical problems with the game, I have seen black polygons on the floor, that flash, disapear and reapear, etc some really messed up things there the textures of the environment just look wierd, lemme see if I got a SS of the latter, its hard to explain lol.

Agree, 2.0 client needs to be much better, its needs to be flash based and not IE based, add a file checker and have the log in screen at the title screen and not the actual client itself.

I had a few occasions back in beta where this happened and had to reinstall the game completely, if it happened now I would be extremely annoyed.

Client and launcher will be redone so obviously it will be better and I hope it will include things like Filecheck... Even XI have that so :|

must be one of the very few having this , looks more like a graphic card/driver problem as a corrupt file problem , usely the game wont even start when files are corrupted.
Never had a single corrupt file here nor did i had any graphic problems on my card.

This polygon problem and other artifacts are caused by overheated cards usely wich makes me think that the inviseble legs etc is because of the same problem.
I am pretty sure this problem is not the game itself .
those glitches are not caused by corrupt files , either the graph driver has a problem(wich i doubt but is possible) or you card cannot handle the stress or gets too hot .. most likely too hot.

Artifact are always the 1st sign your card is going to fail. check your temps.. if u keep playing with that ,soon you wont have a card anymore .

have you tried to play it in windowed / fullscreen . does it make a difference?
lower resolution ? lower graph quality ?

Filecheck has been asked for since beta. The topic has been popping up just to die off pretty quick without any visible reaction from the devs. That could either mean they already included it into the 2.0 client, or don't think it's necessary. Take your pick.

@wolfspirit: from what I saw so far, it's more often a corruption issue than anything else. People who had been playing fine pre-patch suddenly end up having random graphic glitches. When re-installing the game helps, then it can't see how it can be a driver issue :x

Well if its corruption problem ( i won't rule that out), i still find it strange that not everyone has that problem.
Unless he has a very lousy connection maybe.

No, since the patcher is based on torrents, it's virtually impossible to download a corrupted archive. Possible reasons are unstable RAM/CPU clocks, or a failing HDD, with the clocks being the more likely reason. I had one of my RAM sticks not handling the timings set by the manufacturer which resulted in random corrupted copy operations once.

That would be the missing floor thing I was talking about except when it hit me an entire zone was without ground until I reinstalled.

Like I said its not common that I get this, since like 1.18 I have had almost no issues with corrupted files until the recent update which caused these graphical glitches. Before then it was around Nov/Dec 2010 when I got the gamebreaking corruption that made doing anything at the forementioned places impossible.

I have had the graphics problem for awhile, entire year (atleast) I have had the laptop, it could be a heat problem because the laptop does run hot, and I am probably killing my discreet card, bu meh its switchable I'm sure I won't do too much damage to the integrated GPU, so I'll still beable to use it, just not play this :p

I think someone is thinking of flashing ads and other animations, but really it would just be how its programmed, currently the launcher requires IE to work, its dependant on IE settings and things.

If you remove IE, or try to install via wine in linux or OSX you also need to install IE just for the game to launch, using flash would remove the need for other software (paticularly all the back doors in IE, IE fails and its time is over)

Also I have tweaked ALL my graphical settings and everything else in FFXIV Config when i did have these issues and they still persisted until reinstalling. Just because YOU have never heard of something does not mean it does not exist nor does it devalue the experiences others may have with said issue.

Regardless of that this is something this game could benefit from and not be harmed in any way so i see no reason not to have it added sooner or later.

IE9 is quite good, not that i use it. but this game wasn't designed to run on linux and you know that going in you will have to take extra steps for it to run.. I personally don't want the game to require flash which is dying as is. its bloated and its crap. Adobe decides to update and bam the launcher could be broken. Keep it browser based.. OR make the login in c and not bother with either

Why does it have to be any of web-based technologies? What's wrong with an actual INGAME login screen? As for filecheck, just integrate it into the patcher/launcher part of the game. And just use a native windows GUI for it, I don't see why it has to be rendered in 3D.

Most other MMO's use flash based clients don't they ?

I dunno they are better than the crap client we have right now, we don't even get news updates via the client (granted that's got more to do with SE's lack of programming skillz lol)

Using flash for the client is nothing, you got bigger problems seeing as how Yoshi-p wants to use Flash for addons .. ROFL

I agree the game could need it.

Also @mushy, I have never had any flash based problems, also the only reason flash is dying is because of the new HTML5 standard supporting most things flash does, however flash will still be used for other things, the reason people use flash for MMO launchers is because it is relatively easy to program and alot of companies already have people to code for flash for thier websites.

It does have a fair bit of life yet.

use flash for addons? that has to be a joke.. do you mean like user interface addons people could make?

Added another picture of pants error.

Ive got a 1.5 TB WD black Edition drive, i've narrowed down my missing Textures to none other than fragmented files. if it takes too long to load, the client seems to just stop trying. I've fixed this by getting Auslogics Disk Defrag and performing the Defrag&Optimize files option.

(Auslogics is free and works wonders, its much better and faster than the ancient Sysinternals Disk Defrag windows uses.)

Yea they will be user made addons, won't be forced upon you but the fact they are considering Flash for addons at all sounds to me like they have no idea.
