Hello there!
I don’t believe either tank job does burst dps, though I keep hearing Gunbreaker packs a “punch” & you often forget you’re tanking.
In truth, we all deal decent damage according to our respect job-specific rotation & flow of the combos/situational fight.
While we each deliver dps in different ways, I’d say its very subjective to say one over the other packs a better punch.
Maybe Gunbreaker out dps other tanks through criticals like wrr whereas pld & dk are sustaining damage.
Give it a try with Gunbreaker, but also feel free to try out other’s
General consensus in terms of DPS is Gunbreaker > Paladin > Warrior > Dark Knight, I may be mistaken for the last 2.
However DK and Warrior aren’t bad, especially warrior having incredible HP sustain. DK got the best damage mitigation (Blackest Night, shield based on a percentage of your HP).
I have one Gunbreaker at 80, it’s really a great class with cool skill effects. If you have played WoW’s rogue, it’s a bit similar in its core mechanic : build up points (here cartridges) and spend them to deal damage.
My main complain with GNB is the lack of weapon glamour and the relic skins are meh (blue glows for a class using explosions skill effects wth).
It’s also a one trick poney : you use either your AoE/Single Target combos and “finishers” until you can spam one oGCD on a 30s cd plus the No Mercy burst window with 1 aoe dot, 1 single target dot and the 30s oGCD I mentioned before. You do that every minute basically. I read Square Enix dumbed down Tanks a lot in Shadowbringers, but I have just started to play in June so I can’t speak on that.
To unlock Gunbreaker, you need a job at level 60 and then you go to the Gridania, the GNB quest will be there.
I’m leveling Paladin to 80 to see if its rotation is more fun, but so far it feels much less tanky (no personal ability like Heart of Stone/The Blackest Night, you just have shit-tron skill that use your gauge and is weak af, Endwalker only fixes it for the 80-90 levels...).
It’s best if you try both at high level or check guide videos showing you how they play to get a good grasp of what awaits you at max level.
At level 60, you'll be able to pick up the GNB quest near Gridania Aetheryte Plaza.
Gunbreaker - but they take the most damage but they take the most damage. so like living on the edge as tank. this tank for you
Paladin - Paladin currently is 2nd highiest damage in game (personally i say go paladin over gunbreaker. cause your not squishy your godlike. healer wipes psst no problem time to carry. no other tank can do this maybe warrior) while doing second highiest damage in the tanks. this job busted broken all ters of play i seen paladins solo boss fights
Warrior - 3rd
Dark Knight is 4th - simply do not understand class that is made 85% offensive abilities is bottom of the meta. but that is balience issue
ignore these people its true gunbreaker does most damage but it is by fair squishies of all tanks healers hate you. if you play this job. if really want to play something overpowered then play paladin. gunbreaker only does little less damage then paladin. paladin can pretty much solo every boss in the game without a healer. cause you are the healer. and it gets even more powerful in endwalker. paladin is godteir tanking 4 man dungeons
No one but yourself would like a squishie tank that likes pull big and ends up nearly getting themself killed every pull. abusing superbowelie cause its awful
no i give them a simpy awnser and told them pros and cons of the job itself. your just trying to start something. clearly wasn't being toxic. giving them honest answer to there question. its 100% true that gun breakers are squishy. this mostly because how there rotation functions. you no mercy window. watch locks you into no mercy window. were you have go into massive dps chain. during massive dps chain you leave yourself variable. take a lot of damage. your hp is lower then other tanks. and your defensive cooldowns are weaker then other jobs. however they offer additional bonus's like 50% parry rate with 10% defensive cooldown.
this would mean that as gunbreaker you combo or double your defensive cooldowns. invu requires skill. trolling healers with it give you bad rep. and require communication to pull off correctly. aka superbowelie white mages benediction. watch how mad they get.
does it do most damage yes. is it better at tanking nope. aurora is no were near as strong enough compared to clemency, paladins also have flight or flight deal insanes about of aoe damage and single target damage you think sword and broad would be main tank but in 4 man dungeons they have no equal. damage. toughness be able solo a boss with no help. don't you dare say that isn;t true.
don't tell the person that gunbreaker can do things a paladin can cause they cant like to see gunbreaker 100-0 a boss with only sustain they got brutal shell and aurora
I would say maybe try out the tanks in different dungeons to get your answer. Personally, I think all tanks are equally viable in damage alone, especially in 4 man dungeons. But that's just from my own personal experience. Plus, you might end up understanding one tank better than another, so you might be stronger with that tank instead.
hes got a point there you know. if like cosmic of the tank then play that one. really just situational awareness . all tanks have there own style do things others cant. each 4 man dungeon is different. some monsters hit really harder then others. some have alot abilities popping off at once make you dance around not getting hit, most cases pulling big might be good idea. but in some dungeons must take in situation you find yourself in.
- good explaination is this, pulling large groups of bees and 3-4 of them decide fatal sting or bombs. self destruct. there even trash monsters 60+ that use tank busters yes on trash. so good idea kill them first before pulling them in next group cause game give you bad rng both trash monsters do the tank buster lower your health 20% making healer panic heal or worse if your dark knight or gunbreaker use your invur
In truth,
I strongly encourage you to try out all tanks,
The reality it’s that all tanks do a decent amount of damage, though keep in mind we’re designated to have spatial awareness when tanking, timing for skills/defenses, reading your foe’s moves & our damage is to also pressure agroo on you so it won’t direct to the rest of the dps & heals alike.
Consensus may claim which tank may do most dps, yet at the end of the way it’s all about how effective you’ve maintained agroo while keeping yourself alive & the party.
The responsibility for tanking is a noble yet overwhelming trait after all.
PS: In respects to my brothers & sisters tanks from all tank fields
Are you familiar with the term "hits like a wet noodle"? Well, it applies here and the only choice you have is flavor and one of the 4 flavors is shit.
I think everyone knows which one I'm talking about.
Wrong, it has the most damage reduction Cooldowns out of any tank.
Pld is the best solo job for staying alive as tank, but who uses Clemency honestly? Clemency is a busted GCD cast that breaks GCD combos and ruins Requiescat. It's actually the most useless at Main tank for currently having no self heal sustain, Spirits Within being HP based and only having 2 reduction cooldowns.
War is 4th, currently the most useless tank to adapt with any solid comps and lowest damage. It's the most broken MT, that's all it has.
No it's 3rd, certain fights it defeats Pld because of it's extreme Burst Windows that overpowers Plds DPS by a mile during the Rotated burst windows.
GNB is currently the strongest Mitigation tank out of the rest, complete nonsense and has more self heal sustain than a Drk. Paladin can solo heal it's self back up, but again who uses Clemency? It's really terrible lol... War/Drk are the kings at 4 man dungeons. Drk AOE is straight up OP and becomes broken in EW. War is another king for simply being unkillable in mass pulls for a good amount of time.
Still better than Living Dead, and actually you Bolide before you're about to die.
Well, thanks. I do appreciate the responses.
I will try every tank then.
Im actually still not sure which is the best DPS now lol.
I will try warrior next. I don't think I've unlocked DRK
Me.
I'm the tank that does the most damage.
Watch out!
Try to see a guide video that will showcase the jobs rotations + read the tooltips, it’ll give you an idea if it’s your jam.
As for the tank jobs with more dps : Gunbreaker > Paladin > Warrior/Dark Knight, but it’s nothing massive in terms of difference so just play the ones you like.

It's fairly close and varies with percentiles. So pick whichever you like really, but to answer the question GNB pulls ahead and PLD is behind.
Play whatever tank u like best. In end-game, they are only like 2-3% within each other. In dungeons, again its like 5% max, and within 2-3% generally.
However, for dungeons, WAR are comfiest, because similar dmg output, but they get OP self-healing. Life-steal skills + big AoE dmg = Full heals.
Gnb and Pld tend to be highest cause they have sustainable dps, constant damage, dots, and smaller but often brusts, making them great for longer boss fights. While Drk and War have much harder hitting brusts but have a reduced dps lull time between them making them great at nuking down adds.
PLD and GNB for single target. WAR and DRK for AOE
From me experience:
DPS - GNB
Mitigation - DRK/GNB
Self Sustain - WAR/PLD
Overall I tend to run my tanks like this:
WAR for dungeon I am not familliar with/dont feel comfortable yet. Any mistakes I make or healer I can correct with my own self healing. Also he is super easy and dumb to play so my focus is more on unknown mechanics and Holmgang is best invul of all tanks as MT.
GNB for the content I feel comfortable since I have every defensive OGCD planned so I can focus on his high DPS and GNB is more busy, eganging and has shorter "boring" windows between burst phases. GNB obviously deals most damage, though difference between tanks is not that big, but it is, so no point of ignoring that.
PLD I don't like since he is amazing off-tank and he has tons of support but I don't like off-tanking and I can also really feel that he has one less mitigation OGCD than other tanks. It's not the end of the world but in busy fights I miss it.
DRK is fine, but he feels like some akward mix of WAR who is simpe and GNB with all his double weaving. So it's kind of like.... If I want double weaving I would take GNB and if I want safe tank I take WAR. Not saying that DRK is bad, I love DRK but he is in wierd spot now. He has amazing AOE dps though, but TBN while powerful - I don't like that it costs resources while all other mitigation skills of tanks do not.
Anyway - answering your questions, if DPS is your concern then GNB hands down, especially if you like to MT on high-end content. PLD second if you like to be off-tank more.
WAR if you would like simple tank that it's easy and smooth to handle.
If you played DPS than GNB among tanks is like Ninja or Samurai, very busy with a lot of double weaving.
Darks do the most damage now I think
Exactly. DRK was my first love in FFXIV. The thought of playing as DRK is what helped me get through the drag of the first set of patch quests. Hell, I even modeled my character after Sid (as you can see). But with all of the changes in 6.0, it's just not viable to play as DRK anymore when the other three tanks offer so much more.
I was confused with so many ppl saying PLD, until I saw the date of the posts lol.
