I've been leveling a Ninja these last few days and it's by far the most fun I had in the game, the class is fast paced, it can be punishing if you make mistakes and some of its abilities look really good and I tend to quite enjoy the "Rogue" classes in RPGs, but the issue lies with the class fantasy for me, Ninjas just don't do it for me. I've even been trying to wear the Ninja job armor to see how I feel about it but... I don't know.
This is just my personal opinion, I know a lot of people love Ninjas and whatnot, but I feel a bit weird about it, I mean, looking at the Endwalker job sets I got really hyped for a lot of them but the Ninja one didn't quite hook me, and I am afraid this will be a common theme should I main this job.
So my question is: How many of you main a job where you really enjoy the gameplay but the fantasy for you was a bit "Meh"? And in that case, did that bother you or you just kinda ignored it?

hmm I watch the trailer the only thing about Ninja that felt wrong to me is the removal of the dot that seems like its ripping away the classic theme (atleast for me) for Ninja and turning it into some anime job. In a way I agree with you I think the elemental attacks should be scroll pull outs not hand signs, that said I'm happy that summoner job fantasy will be there for me I quit a long time ago because of that I'm glad after 4 expansions they finally listened.
As a mage fan I am both happy and angry about rdm I don't think it should get to aoe the flare/holy or even get foul at all... Those are suppose to be signatures for whm/blm but at the same time I'm meha w/e
blm idk how I feel about it I've always called that job the Cooldown job not a mage (since almost every ability it has is a cd)
the rest idk how i feel about but for the most part the only things im angry with is how Sch is ripped off/ ast doesnt have back the old card system (best card system) and ninja losing the only poison (dot) they have that is what made the weebyness bearable was it still had theif style movies/assassin type with poison now I dont think I will ever look at it. -

This may be due to me being an ex-WoW player and a heavy RPer, but I have the mindset of a single character having a specialization, and I make a character out of it. Ferra's the striker so I intended her to be almost exclusively MNK. I have a Viera spellcaster and I made her character based on her being an arcane saleswoman, dabbling in spells and arcane items.
It makes it easier for me to get into a job I normally wouldn't play. Naturally this isn't for a lot of people because you're intended to have the one character do all the jobs and each new character makes you replay MSQ.
Otherwise, yeah, it is sometimes tricky to get into the fantasy of a character if they're doing a job they normally wouldn't do, or goes against their character. Anyway, paramount thing is play what you enjoy! -

My main gripe with Ninja in FFXIV is that its base class is Rogue. Thief is just as much of an iconic job in the FF series as Ninja.
I know I know... in FFI Thief upgrades to Ninja, but in other titles they have also both existed as separate identities, including FFXI (the other MMO) and FFVI.
I just wish the Thief/Rogue could have been a separate job. -

I've had this issue in previous games, actually, and because of that tried to approach this game differently by doing research on the various classes/jobs as well as trying out several before really settling into anything. I still fully expected to go through that, to play a Job because I liked the idea but potentially wind up not liking either the gameplay or the mythos and jumping around a bit, but I wound up getting pretty lucky this time around...
I started as BLM, just because I'm a mage-nerd and always play them in any game. That's always my personal head-cannon, always gotta be a wizard of some type, and BLM is the quintessential wizard. Leveled BLM up first and loved it!
Started exploring the other pillars of the holy trinity because I like jumping between dps, tanking, and healing, and started leveling a PLD. I liked it, but similar to what you described, wasn't super-feeling it. Then I discovered GNB, and gave it a go. It was rough at first, but after getting it up to 80 and advancing through the game into higher content, it just got better and better for me, and fits my head-cannon so amazingly well because it's like being a Mage-Tank; no heavy armor, a seemingly "simple" weapon, but the ability to channel immense magics to devastating (and highly protective) effect.
And from there got into healing; WHM is an old standard so while I viewed it as a possibility, didn't want to dive in immediately. I checked out SCH, liked the idea, but the gameplay didn't mesh in my head. Then I discovered AST and was immediately intrigued. Gave it a go, and like GNB, fell in love with it!
So yeah, unlike most previous games, I got silly-lucky this time around and have been enjoying the Jobs immensely. I still want to level up and explore all of the other jobs for fun, but for right now I'm still having too much fun with my personal trinity.
I know this doesn't help you right now, OP, but where I'm going with is this: One of the amazing things about this game is the amount of flexibility there is to explore new classes/jobs, so there's every reason to explore others to see how they fit for you. And who knows, maybe it's possible that by exploring a few other Jobs it'll bring you back around to enjoying Ninja again! (Or at least enjoying it enough to ignore the mythos, lol) -

I main a job that I like the fantasy of, but there are jobs that I main for secondary roles that I didn't like the fantasy of.
I think a lot of people feel this way, but punching with fists seems pointless when you can use a weapon, so monk didn't appeal to me at first, but when I played it I enjoyed it so much that I played it as a main DPS for most of this expansion.
I thought that bows were not very good. I would see Amal'jaa shoot arrows at me while in front of me (so they would miss me if it were real) and I would just slash them and that put me off arrows. But when I played a bard I enjoyed it so much that it was my main DPS throughout Stormblood.
So whether you can enjoy playing a class is not related to the fantasy but liking the fantasy helps you to enjoy it more. If an expansion changes it so it's not as good, if you like the fantasy enough you might stick with it until it's fixed.
I prefer rogues over ninjas as well, but what you can do is dress up as a rogue and pretend to be one. The only thing that is hard to ignore is the mudras. -

I can definitely feel this with Paladin but sort of in reverse. I've always loved the concept of paladins, and I've always been a fan of sword and board "styles," but I just can't get into the way paladin's play. The low level play actually felt pretty good but once you start getting into your magic phase it just lost me. Something about that just feels so clunky and, frankly, ugly to me visually. I love the way it looks in the EW job trailer now but I just don't know if it will "feel" better to me. Right now if I tank, I much prefer gunbreaker (which, ironically, I love the feel of playing but just like but not love the visuals of).
So, yeah, love the concept of Paladin but don't really like the way FF14 Paladin feels to actually play. -

I think I understand. From the little I’ve observed so far, classes all have their own sort of flow and some things will feel great gameplay wise but not necessarily click aesthetically. Personally I’d say gameplay trumps aesthetics if you have to choose, because gameplay that clicks for you is deeply satisfying in its own way. It’s one of the reasons I’ll dabble in most of the classes over time I think, which is not something I expected beforehand. I usually play one class, two max. But I’m actually curious how the different classes/jobs feel even if the appearance of it doesn’t do it for me. I have to say I really enjoy WHM so far, I started with that and it’ll be the one that gets to 80 guaranteed so in that sense I experience no dilemma. Even if most of my job quests seemingly involve talking to a tree :D
But like others said, maybe experiment with different classes, or mog yourself into a rogue and ignore the ninja tag. Maybe create a backstory which explains how and why your rogue learned some ninja moves. Even if you have no intention at all to roleplay or share it with others, it can create a different feeling around your character and abilities. -

Hmmm it depends, but as for me, the aesthetic matters more. Ninja is the first dps I leveled, I like the fast paced playstyle and have no trouble with remembering mudra at all. All in all, I like how it plays. Yet at the same time I was let down by the fact rogue turns into ninja and I dislike the job aesthetic, from glams to the skills. So in the end I change my dps mains into rdm.

To the OP, just to be different from others, I've made pirate/rogue NIN glams or ones where I'm wearing a knee-length dress and hide the daggers that then come out when I go into combat. Glams can help you get into a class or change things up.
As far as the question itself, I love how fast-paced bard is, but I'm not a fan of the mix of bard and archer. It's always felt weird to me and I never understood why they took that angle with it. On the opposite end of things, I LOVE the theming of astrologian but the gameplay feels a bit disjointed and erratic and I often lose track of pulling cards or I get lost in the card-pulling minigame and forget to heal. -

Myself I main Paladin or white mage, but for the longest time I wanted to main dragoon.
It is just the rotation feels clunky compared to others, like samurai. There is the eye timer you have to pop, then maintain, then weave abilities to open the eyes for what, a dps burst phase that feels hard to plan out since if you lose the eye timer, you start all over. It used to need 3 eyes to even get that burst phase…
It would be so much better if they just removed blood of the dragon and/or didn’t have “eye loss”. Or had some other means of charging the eye gauge not tied to jumps.
Samurai is just 3 sets of moves, and a bar you charge up that doesn’t go away unless you use it.
Of course I’m sure it would become much easier if I played it a lot more..and maybe that long string of moves to memorize is part of the appeal, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Back in 3.0 I played DRK, but wanted a more traditional Knight look. So my glamours were less "Darkish".
Similar with my WAR, I hate Axes, and Hammers, so the moment the scythe was available for glamour, I used it.
"Job identity" and what I want, will never work in FF14, so im glad i at least have some limited glamour to try and make me a bit more happy playing jobs. -

If the appearance of the class bothers you, then there are always glamours to look completely different. Sure you can't change what the abilities look like though.
That part is actually a downside for me about Ninja; I really wish that Rogue was allowed to also be a class, because Rogue is a much more fun fantasy to me than a Ninja. As the expansions have come the job has become a lot more like what you would see in Naruto which isn't bad at all, but I do wish there was an alternative. -

In ARR I used SMN a lot, it was fun to play- I was rather upset about how far they departed from the epic class fantasy of the job (in respect to FF specifically, "it's okay compared to some other mmo" is not the standard I'm /ever/ going to put a FF smn to- this is a freaking FF smn- my standards are on the moon and they're not going any lower lol). It did bother me, but the job was super useful (and it was fun to play)- so I did it anyways. Pinnacle sad class fantasy me was the AF 50 with the silly horn but no epic cool spells, just casting bio and stuff lol (yes I know the horn is a classic SMN attire, but it always reminds me of that pink unicorn meme picture- it's just silly :p).
At this point though all the jobs I main because I like playing them is also because I think their class fantasy is fun (SMN is no longer the dead well beaten horse that is ARR's, and after EW it's going to be a billion yalms away from ARR), and I play them all because they're all different kinds of fun. Though I just feel particularly silly as SCH (we'll still win but I don't feel it's as smooth a rise as when I play AST / WHM), and I don't really get into the visuals of that job. -

I am fickle with my class likings. They bounce based on aesthetics, gameplay and class stories.
- I consider myself a WHM main but its fantasy does not quite grip me as much. I just ended up getting moderately okay at playing it and stuck with it. The fact that the few Stone and Wind spells get replaced with Light in Shadowbringers really takes a step back from the small amount of uniqueness it had compared to a commonplace "Light healer" trope in games.
- Dancer has a great fantasy/aesthetic to it and yet I can't ever see myself maining it. Same with Summoner.
- Black Mage is amazingly flashy, the THM and ARR BLM class stories were kind of interesting, but again, I don't see myself maining it.
- Astrologian had a great look to it but - don't know why - I got burnt out of playing it quickest. The job story is pretty cool, though.
- Scholar has somewhat underwhelming-looking spells, the ARR and HW SCH stories are... Odd? I get what was going on in ARR, but HW feels really non-impactful. Perhaps I just did not pay enough attention to it. It was a contrast to HW SMN story, which has its twists and works nice as a small story. Although, the idea on paper of being a strategic combat medic is awfully cool, so I don't mind switching to it.
- I would not find much of Machinist to speak home about had it not had a bit of a fleshed-out job story.
Overall, I suppose it's WHM for me. It's fun to play for me. I can slip in and out of it with no trouble. But as far as its spells and aesthetic go, I feel sort of plain. Not that I'm fussed! -

I main WHM I like being a WHM for the most part but the story isn’t really that interesting to me.. I mean it is ok sometimes.. but for the most part it’s boring. It was what partly lead to my quitting the game back in 2.0 when I originally bought ffxiv cause both stories were boring to me.. My roommate kept insisting though that things get better main story wise and that i just ended up picking one of the worst classes for story content. So i just recently a couple months ago decided to give it another shot and just power through.. found that whm story still kinda lacks but msq did pick up a bit. I think I like the game a lot more this time round.. Still not really that connected to WHM story but i do find myself reading more of it these days. I do like the idea of what a whm is sort of jusr class story kinda dull.. fyi i am about 10 lvls ahead of my story process so i am actually only doing lvl 60 story quests..

DRK was what I was planning to (and did, for a bit) main bc I love the aesthetic and lore, but... much like the OP I found the gameplay lackluster... that, and after a point I no longer wanted to be responsible for tanking. I played DRG and NIN for a while after that but neither was what I was looking for.
Thankfully, SAM satisfies myfetishdesire for 2H swords and I enjoy its gameplay, too! I do wish it was... less specifically "samurai" and more of a generic "swordsman" class, with a more varied arsenal, but eh...
My alt started as a Lancer and... in the end I was feeling neither the lore nor the gameplay, so she's kind of identity-less atm... -

I say the following with the caveat that I am new-ish to the game. White mage, sounds incredibly dull and boring. The early job quests are bad, the gear is blank and the spell effects are pitiful compared to the other healers. But I absolutely love the way the job plays. My favorite healer by far. Scholar just feels like no one knows what to do with it, mechanically or lore wise. Astrologian looks amazing and has great quests and spell effects, but I struggled to play it right and understand it. Oh and as a healer I love the instant queues. White mage for me!

I totally understand where OP is coming from.
The Dark Knight fantasy really doesn't do much for me. Some of the armor is cool, I guess. But I'm one of the few people who don't find the job questlines *amazing*. I find the ability theming to be kind of generic, ill-defined gothy. I never really like "darkness within" shadow clones, they are way overdone in Japanese media and are a pretty shallow, empty concept at this point.
But despite all of that I main DRK (I am a tank and swap between DRK/GNB depending on MT/OT) because the rotation just works for me. It feels the "tankiest" of the tanks, but only due to one ability, TBN. And even outside of combat I default to DRK because they have the best looking swords in the game. But I still often feel weird wearing a bunch of "not very dark" glams on top of the edgelord class. I'm a very bright DRK.
To sum it up, I can relate to OP. I couldn't justify, say, getting a DRK tattoo, because even though I main a DRK, I don't really identify much with the job fantasy at all. -

I thought poking things with the spear was cool, but the lnc and drg story sucked, I never cared about the lore or series history of the job, because I always thought it was a trash job with a really boring gameplay gimmick. Transitioning to BRD it feels like it has the opposite issue, it’s more engaging elements are all arrows where songs and ballads are more on the sidelines. Yes they enhance attacks and all but they can do more of engagement to the gameplay. But a Fun kit is a fun kit regardless, but again we main the jobs mostly for the fantasy. Hopefully BRD gets more impactful songs, like it’s nice to do wardens paean someone’s PARA away but it’s sooo rare and Minne CD is too long for it to be fun. -

My advice is 2 things.
1. Don't a main a job you can't identify with, like see yourself in the class fantasy thinking man I look cool as a PLD, SAM, etc, yeah it might have cool gameplay but if you can't see yourself as a PLD, SAM,etc, then just have that as one of your 2ndary jobs, cause it's boring if only play one job.
2. You don't have to have a main, find a collection of jobs u enjoy for whatever reason and play them, each new gear cycle, which is usually 2 patches, you can tombstone gear PLD this time or SAM in the next cycle, etc, plus the HQ crafted gear will do u just fine in this game.
I don't raid so maybe things are different in that atmosphere but from what I hear people alot of times choose a role and bring one of those jobs in that role, but other then raiding just find u a collection of jobs u enjoy or learn to make compromises. -

I wasn't sure how to answer this question until I read another person's comment about SMN. That would be the job that best qualifies to answer OPs question. My SMN is 80 because my SCH is 80. Oddly enough though, I actually decided to progress the main story to ShB as a SMN. I felt that a caster was a fitting opposition to Emet for our final clash, and since I did not have a 80 BLM, I went with my SMN. I also wanted to play around with demi Bahamut and Phoenix.
Nothing about SMN appeals to me though. The aesthetic, the lore, the gameplay, even the EW showcase. None of it grabs me. My short time playing it this expansion reaffirmed that it is the job I have the least affinity with. I still keep it geared though. It is currently i520 unmelded.
As for NIN. I am a big fan of western pop culture, accurate eastern representation, and anime versions of ninja; so they could've gone any of these directions with it. They've mostly gone the anime route, and are even tripling down on it next expansion. Someone over there is a huge Naruto fan for sure. Makes me wonder which of the God abilities granted by the Rinnegan they could give to NIN. -

I main AST and have no interest in the class fantasy or Astrology in general. It's simply the best healer with the most enjoyable gameplay from the current 3 options. That's more than enough for me.
On the other hand, I love the class fantasy of DRK and don't enjoy the class at all because the gameplay just isn't fun. -

When I tank, I play Gunbreaker, as it is the only tank job that has an actually fun rotation. Unfortunately, I don't like the aesthetic. It would have been cool if I could act like Squall, a skilled swordsman from FF8, almost like a fencer. But in FFXIV, Gunbreaker is a brute who holds his weapon behind his back, constantly overswings, and has to rely on explosions that obfuscate my character rather than any finesse or precision.
White Mage is the only healer job I find tolerable. I liked the shaman aesthetic early on when tossed rocks at enemies or cast wind spells, but then in ShB your spells are replaced by bland priest looking spells. Fortunately Sage is coming out which has a cool aesthetic and seems to have fun Mistweaver Monk gameplay from WoW.
Conversely, I liked the aesthetic of Dragoon, but I hate the positionals and they clash with the aesthetic IMO. Moving back and forth while carrying that huge weapon doesn't feel good. Feels more natural when wielding a smaller, lighter weapon like a katana.
Archer and Bard should have also been separate jobs as well. The end result is that you neither feel like a skilled bowmen, nor like a bard (ie Ministrels from LotRO), but instead like some guy who flicks a bow to send out a barrage of particle effects, and it feels very bland and forgettable.Quote:

It's mostly people just mundanely firing their bows or thrusting their spears. So the shouts and the songs stand out more. I may pick up RPR for my raid group if its good enough, I'm not thrilled with its presentation, but eh. I have the most flexibility in my group in terms of jobs I can play so....
