Whenever someone asks about alts...
They're the ones who always scream "why would you want more than one character???", "You don't need alts" (or if on Reddit downvote the post into oblivion), etc...
It seems like the idea actually offends them.

Wat.
It's a valid question to most people I think asking it doesn't mean that you're offended.
And basically ANYTHING on the FFXIV reddit that isn't a meme gets downvoted to hell.
Even actual useful guides get downvoted I dunno what in the actual hell is wrong with people there but they've got serious issues.
Stop using reddit.
Probably because you don't need alts...
I mean...why would you want more than one character?
/s
1) I create alts to see the actual animations of other race.
2) I create alts to play with friends that can't be in the same server with me. (pre datacenter travelling)
3) During 2.0 there's pretty much nothing do after capping tomes. A lot of us created alts to ease the boredom.
There I gave you 3 reasons.
The 14 subreddit is the the cringiest, worst subreddit or community for a game I have ever seen. It's almost impressive how bad it is, but part of the blame goes to the mods on there enabling the situation. If you want a more quality 14 subreddits check out ff14discussion, talesfromdf, and even shitpostXIV. I love it how people on main sub shit on these forums as if they’re bad when it’s a million times better than their crappy community.
As for the alt thing... I played an alt for the first time recently to try and gain an appreciation for the game again, and it worked.
Roleplayers: Exist
People with Friends playing on more than one DC: Exist
Raiders who wanna do more weeklies without messing anyone's chests, ya know go a little up and beyond: Exist
People who dodge/cope with fantasia addiction by having few characters which look differen: Exist
Did not figure this out before, but I think I identify little with all of the above.
EDIT1
Also this.
While newgame+ is nice, it never did it for me.
EDIT2
...
Account-wide Mogstation mounts: Exist :D
....pssst, you guys "/s" stands for sarcasm
Y'all... they added "/s" to the end of their post. Typically, /s denotes sarcasm, and is used to convey that the message is facetious.
FF14 reddit is just as bad as /xivg/.
The only difference is that if you go afoul of the mods on reddit you either get downvoted to the end of time or a mod will just up and remove your post.
It wouldn't even surprise me if the only time threads in the FFXIV Reddit gets a positive upvote score is when it gets attention from other subreddits that come in and upvote them.
That's how bad the situation is.
I often see people say that the reason why the issue exists is because of '' low-effort posts/ easy to google questions '' but it's clearly not true and it's still not as bad on other pages.
And memes often get upvoted too which is hardly '' big brain '' content.
The stuff that gets upvoted on the official Reddit is basically the same as ShitpostXIV even if they love to pretend otherwise.
I have two characters. No, it's not to play with friends on a another server. It's just for me. I like to swap back and forth between characters who have different jobs, different roles, and different vibes.
I am aware I'm enduring mountains of arbitrary, needless inconvenience and hassle because of it. I know I'm shut out of achievements, titles, etc., for not doing everything on one character. I am literally being gouged a higher monthly subscription fee to do so, for no reason at all other than Square Enix hates me. I don't need to be told "Oh honey, you're playing the game wrong."
Is there a non-gendered word for "mansplaining"? This seems like the most accurate term, but as an IRL man myself I don't think I get to call it that, lol.
Most people there seem to hate fan art and cosplay ( especially if it's female characters ).
Imo fan art and cosplay has more of a place ( and also requires far more effort ) on a fanpage than copy pasted memes.
Fan art and cosplay sometimes sits in the positive but usually has still been massively downvoted too.
I don't think a player really does need alts, quite frankly. SE's own design isn't even alt friendly, and I'm pretty sure a few months ago when people were asking about alts, Yoshida just said to buy boosts or a story skip, rather than make the experience better for altoholics (?).
I do have my own alt regardless - that I barely play - just in case there is someone I might want to play with on another datacenter, but now with datacenter visit coming, even that will be obsolete.
Roleplayer here I have about 14 characters that I use for rp. All with their own personal stories and characteristics
I'm going to because I RP and want to RP as different things. As much as I love being a Highlander punch lady maybe I feel like being something else.
Know you can be anything with just one character and you gotta do the MSQ to unlock things but variety is the spice of life! Worth the little bit of suffering.
for a group that is more about screaming "you dont pay my sub" sure is a lot of ragging on other people for their choices...
me personally, I dont care what someone else does or how many characters they want to have.
I have come from MANY mmos where I have MANY alts. for me, this is a nice change, I dont have to think about what I want to play any given day, I dont have to scrabble around looking through inventory for that thing I know I had, somewhere on someone. if someone else wants to make a ton of alts? doesnt bother me at all, its their dime, they can do what they wish as long as it doesnt affect my ability to play and have fun.
Because it's a lalafell.
I am completely surprised you were able to find a post on reddit that wasn't a manga/chibi style drawing of someone's character or the sea of uwu. I dropped the xiv reddit just cause it was giving me flashbacks of the time I spent managing the only store in town that sold anime lol. I already can't watch anime anymore, I didn't want this game ruined for me too lol
Player's don't need alts, but there are a lot of players that like to have and utilize alts for a variety of reasons that can stem from RP characters, wanting to raid on other datacenters, doing split raiding to gear up faster, wanting a different aesthetic choice, and before the game launched there were people who considered leveling different alts with different job focuses to save down on inventory space. These are all valid reasons to want to have an alt character, and for a long time the game's been incredibly alt un-friendly. Can't mail anything to a new alt without getting a friend involved, can't choose to skip through MSQ on an alt even though you've already done the MSQ and the MSQ doesn't provide any real differences when replaying it -- there's no harder version of it to do to game-ify the experience a bit more and so on. Have to re-unlock everything on an alt and, for some normal fights, that can be an exceptionally long queue time and so on and so forth.
Being told to buy a boost if you want an alt is akin to being told to buy a glamour prism on the Mogstation if you want to change your look with the addendum that in order to play FFXIV, you don't need to design an outfit for your character. It's not a costumer friendly solution and it just comes off in poor taste to me.
This game is so inconsistent with accessibility for alts...
I know it has a reputation of being alt-unfriendly and yet we have 100 slots for Shared Macros that can be used by any of the other characters on the same account...
Which is nice for me since I do use my alts to do extra crafter/gatherer daily/weeklies to get more materia to blow up on my main...
Honest question, IF, if people didn't have as many alts or stuck with just having the one, since you can do everything/anything on one character, would it decrease the level of, "Congestion"? And would people having less alt characters, make it easier for new players or friends of current players, have it easier to be on the same server?
afaik, assuming alts are on same account this isn't really an issue. Since a common tactic for character creation is to make your character on the world you want outside of peak play times for that server. Like I remember when my sister and I transferred servers back in the day, it wouldn't let us do it during "normal business hours" cuz the servers were "congested", so we woke at 3am and were successfully able to transfer the same characters to the same server we were trying to earlier with no problems.
Dual-boxers or Trip-boxers and beyond though...
I thought this was sarcasm at first. Female cosplay and fan art is almost always in the hundreds or thousands of upvotes lmao. It’s the male ones that are usually at the risk of downvotes for not appealing to the majority of the reddit community. This transfers over to 14 as well where female outfits and designs seem to get favoritism from the devs over the male ones.
Yes but look at the downvotes, that's what I said.
It depends on the art too I am not saying that it's a 100% thing.
But even when they have hundreds or thousands of upvotes they still sit heavily in the downvotes too if you look at the %.
And the comment sections are usually FAR more negative too.
Particularly as if you say the art is reflective of the actual game itself, anything that's even remotely suggestive gets the hate brigade out in full force even if it's from the actual game.
Reddit in particular has a VERY vocal group of people who are extremely rude and hateful towards any of that even when it's real people cosplaying.
It's not uncommon to scroll down and see it even when the mods have stepped in and deleted comments and reminded people of the rules, people still do it.
I dunno why some subreddits are worse with this than others, for some reason the Tekken subreddit is actually worse with this.
People on there will unironically label fanart of Ling that is accurate to her in Tekken 7 '' hentai '' because it's cute, that's how ridiculous people are about it.
I don't think that art of male characters really gets downvoted, altho it's more rare to see art of male characters but this extends to art in general most people prefer to draw female characters.
But I do think that there are people who get extremely upset and are extremely petty about female characters that aren't nuns incarnate and they're rampant on a lot of subreddits the FFXIV one included.
Even if it'll get a positive score because of people scrolling through and just pressing upvote the actual comments tend to be far more indicative of the downvoters and it still tends to have hundreds to thousands of downvotes too.
It's true that people just downvote simply because '' it doesn't appeal to me/ I don't like it '' which is extremely petty and I think sort of an abuse of the system.
Just keep scrolling ffs...
But I think that those people are far more active with female characters because people tend to get way more emotionally invested in it when it's female characters and politicize it way more.
