I wish this game had a spellblade job

While yes, the paladin does to a degree fill this niche, it is a) not a DPS (which I traditionally regard spellblades as being), and b) really only has one ability - Confiteor - which truly fits the mold. Although spellblades aren't specifically a "thing" in Final Fantasy, equivalent jobs that were spellblades in all but name were pretty much littered throughout Final Fantasy Tactics - from Gaffgarion's Fell Knight, to Agrias' Holy Knight, to Dycedarg's Rune Knight. All of them were equipped with various spell-sword attacks which were amongst the more visually interesting and memorable abilities (at least IMO) in FFT:

I'm in no way crapping on the upcoming jobs - I personally plan to at least try to main a Sage (no promises; in 2+ decades of playing MMORPGs, I've never main'd a healer for more than about 3 weeks) - but if the game continues to putter along, and if we really are not going to see more races added, I do expect there to be additional jobs. And, frankly, something spellblade-ish should probably be in the mix, considering how prominent those jobs were in FFT, and how we do live on that same planet.

Also, my second-place vote is for Geomancer. Because volcanoes.

RDM is definitely NOT an allusion to a spell blade. Not in the slightest. They use magic via a catalyst, just like other magic classic jobs. It just happens that they have 4 melee skills.

All of which still do magic damage, if I recall.

@Endariel: Spellblades are more like knights with magical abilities attuned through their weapons. They'd be a melee class with a bunch of DOT/status ailment/debuff/burst abilities that were (hopefully) visualized as giant swords erupting from the ground, or falling from the sky, etc.

Red mage is... more like a caster who likes to dabble in a bit of fencing. Their rapier is just a staff with the headpiece floating in a disembodied fashion next to them except when casting. It's not the same thing at all.

I assume you haven't played FFV as this is mystic knight you're describing. And yes, I've wanted that job for XIV for years, could be awesome in this game. Not really necessarily as giant swords all around the place but imbuing magic spells to their swords, adding cool black magic effects to basic melee sword attacks.

Realistically speaking RDM is probably close enough by their reckoning... but assuming that isn't the case, as swords go there's still longswords (somewhere between one-handed swords and greatswords). They could make that their weapon, and I'd be all for it!
EDIT: for examples of what I'm talking about think The Witcher's Geralt or the protagonist of Tales of Arise. They're two-handed swords, but not the kind people usually think of

Yeah also disappointed with this, its actually odd that we don't have a single proper sword wielding DPS, Paladin and Gunbreaker are obvs Tanks, Red Mage sword may as well be a staff closest is Samurai

Yeah would love a spell blade class, casts spells to enchant the sword and slice things up

The mystic knight fits that bill and I would love it to be in xiv as a job. Or if they wanted a different name for it the spell fencer from the 4 heroes of light comes to mind.

I'm still holding out for Rune Fencer or anything like that. If they added a class who was focused around runes to cast imbued physical magics I'd swap my main from Paladin in a heartbeat.

I'm on board. Always had a thing for Agrias Oaks even though only played the original ps1. Was disappointed she had no more dialogue after she permanently joined the party.

Sword Mage has been a thing in previous games. FFV had Mystic Knight and while not quite the same Vivi/Steiner had magic sword in FFIX. As said littered throughout Tactics games and Bravely Default as well. However mechanically what everyone here is describing "Using magic to augment your melee focused attacks" kind of sounds like what we're getting in Reaper. Yes "technically" reaper uses a Voidsent but mechanically sounds like what people are referring too.

I think with Agrias, even though she is pretty much a paladin, it’s more that her “spells” are based around her sword instead of casting it. I get using her as an example for that at least.

You DPS people are never happy.

There's enough DPS in this game already. Red Mage satisfies my spellcaster with a sword fix enough, Reaper sounds like fun when that comes out, and there's enough magic with the other sword users to satisfy me.

Paladin, Red Mage and Ninja are all spellblade classes. Diferent flavors of spellblade, but they are there.

Geomancer already exist in game, is called Conjurer.

PLD takes a lot of the "Holy Knight" animations. Goring Blade, Atonement (to an extent) and Confiteor match some ability animations from Agrias and TG Cid.

DRK dropping shadow magic all over the place—gets no love.

I believe it’s less about the other sword wielding jobs using magic attacks, and more about having a job that specifically uses magic to infuse their swords to attack. The way Msytic Knights/Spell Fencers don’t actually cast magic in the normal sense and basically tie it into their weapons.

I think Mystic Knight would be cool but I don’t see how they could make the spellblade mechanic unique and different enough from a RDM or BLM. As we know elemental affinity does not exist in this game so what would be the point of using different elemental spellblades? And how would they have access to the 8 elements and how they intertwine so that you actually use them?

I admit I was hoping we'd get a Mystic Knight class with Endwalker, but technically all classes incorporate magic, or more specifically aether manipulation, into their skill set.

BLM doesn't melee. RDM doesn't ACTUALLY melee - they just spring close to the mob every 45 seconds, hit 3 buttons, and bounce back. Neither are melee classes. Neither enchant their weapon with magic to complete blade-attacks. It's just not the same.

While I agree that RDM is not a melee class, they do actually enchant their weapon to perform melee attacks. When you have no mana gauge, the melee attacks do phys damage, but when you do them while spending mana gauge, they do magic damage. You are releasing your built up mana through the rapier's blade.

Unless you claim white mage and geomancer is the same thing, introducing geomancer would be redundant? If not conjurers should be able to evolve into geomancer (more so than white mage even).

I mean, the examples given from FFT are literally Paladin and Dark Knight.
Plus Red Mage DOES take inspiration from Mystic Knight, as it enchants it's blade for the melee combo, it's just not on an element-by-element basis.

An actual Mystic Knight would be cool, but with Tanks and Melee DPS saturated right now, and RDM filling that role for Casters, I think it's very unlikely. XIV doesn't like to have jobs that are too similar, same reason we won't get Time Mage (AST), or Thief (NIN), or Berserker (WAR). Mystic Knight is too similar to PLD/DRK/RDM, depending on which way you want to swing it.

If they plan to keep adding jobs to the game, which they do, though iirc they've said it probably won't at the rate they have been (2 per expansion), I think there's basically no avoiding some conceptual and/or functional overlap.

If anything, Geomancer is more likely to be a healer than a DPS. The SB astrologian questline established that Geomancers are basically Astrologians except they read the movements of the earth rather than the movements of the stars.

I just feel like having a job that does what other jobs already do to a degree feels kinda redundant and doesn't make the job stick out.

DDO had something like this called an arcane knight. It was fun to play but wasn't as powerful as the other magic classes.

I think the idea would be an interesting limited job.
