Help in dungeons.

So yesterday I was doing the MSQ line. Got to the dungeon part.

No problems with that, fairly strait forward. Get into the dungeon with other players and they all just took off. I’m on a lancer with no AOE (unless I missed something).

I was essentially chasing mobs, trying to target and just do something.

The boss fights where easy one and done. That part was strait forward dungeon/ raid 101.

What can I do to improve on trash? It really feels bad to just be chasing down the tank trying to do anything to be in range. All I could do was spam my one ranged attack.

All three dungeons where like that. If this was wow I’d call it a speed run. Don’t watch the cut scenes, use sprint on CD, and keep up.

So like I said, is it just that I’m low level or is there anything I can do to be helpful in these dungeons? I don’t want to feel like I’m in the way or slowing down the groups.

It most likely was a speed run, yes.

You don't get AOE at first, but you will by about level 40 on all classes. It's good that you are thinking of using AOE, because a lot of people actually get to max level and still don't do AOE. Tanks have AOE from the first dungeon because they need it to hold all of the mobs properly and that's why they will speed run that early.

To help with keeping up with the tank, press Sprint. If you haven't attacked any enemies yet, it will last 20 seconds instead of 10 seconds.

I would recommend not trying so hard to attack until the tank actually stops because it's not likely to work. The game usually considers the enemies further ahead than you see them because of ping.

The dungeons are not hard in general but they do get more mechanical and beautiful as you get further on.

For the most part dungeons are dragging packs together to make the biggest group you can and everyone AoEing them down.
During the part where you're all gathering mobs you're not slowing anyone down unless you accidentally rip aggro somehow, and even then so long as you keep bringing the mob forward its whatever.

I do keep forgetting about sprint. But rest assured although I might forget to sprint, I’ll never forget to AOE lol.

Best way in the low level dungeons I found is to target the tank (figure out which function key they are; F2, F3, or F4) and then press T..."target your target's target" ( otherwise known as ASSIST). Then you DPS whatever the tank is focussed on. Tab works too but I find I lose focus really easily for some reason.
Hit Shift+T to target the first mob attacking you. You should maybe study your other keybinds as well. :)

That's if you're using keyboard and mouse, of course. If you're using a controller...you're on your own!!

Yeah, the way class skills are distributed not every class has an aoe ability for the first dungeons. Some classes dont get the first skill til 45 or 50. If youre on a class that doesnt have the option, you try to stick with the tank and use your single target combo/abilities to thin the packs. Each dead enemy is one less target hitting the tank. And soon enough you will have your AoE too. Its unfortunate that the classes dont get the abilities at the same time, but it is a fact of life that most everyone understands(and the newer players who dont know that you dont have an AoE are less likely to multi-pull anyway, so its less noticable).

Welcome to FFXIV dungeons, you do with the tools you have, you have no AoE, you do without.

The only thing that changes with the higher level dungeons is that from Heavensward on you have interesting combat mechanics.

Complaints from people who don't know that you can't do AoE are good candidates for your blacklist.

Once you have AoEs, you should use them on trash while auto attacking the target with the highest health. Any time you are using single target attacks, make sure you are constantly adjusting your target so that you are attacking the target with the most health. This will help the people who are AoEing by avoiding one or two mobs still having near full health when everything else dies and will ensure you don’t interrupt their casts by killing their target. Don’t bother using Assist Target on the tank, as the tank should be spamming AoE and auto attacking the highest health mob but most tanks are bad and won’t do this.

I am having a problem with the dungeons. At least 4 times now the dungeon duty finders put's me in the wrong dungeon (one I have already completed) I make sure the dungeon I want is ticked and it even says the name of the dungeon I want in the wait queue quest log. Then I get called to the dungeon and it's some other dungeon I have already completed. It's maddening because I have to run it all over again as not to let the team down. Is this a known bug?

It's common while going through the quests for the first time.

What happens is you tick a dungeon and complete it. Later on you tick another dungeon and queue for it, but because you didn't untick the previous one, you queue for both.

You all are so helpful. Appreciate the reminders about single targeting the highest health trash.

I’m used to being max level with an AOE spec in wow.

I’m glad people understand that I can’t AOE right now.

This game is so much fun. Really love that my FC members can run with me. Again all, thanks for the advice, it is very much appreciated.

If it makes you feel better, this is a mistake that a LOT of us have made once or twice over the years. Finish something, do a quest(or go afk or whatever else), que for next thing without noticing both are highlighted, and then its luck of the draw which group fills first.
