Death animation

Hello there !
I played FFXI for a long time and here since the V1.

I find it\\'s kinda sad that all races die in the same way. I know they introduce the emote /playdead and has different animation with it.

Like FFXI, they did different death animation for all races. That was really funny to see tarutarus (lalafell from FFXI) falling without their knees touching the ground first. Elvaans (Elezen) spinning before falling on their back. Etc..

Even in cutscene, seeing random npc dying like everyone else is a bit.. dull.
I think it will give more personnality to races.

Yeah the death animation is the laziest thing I’ve seen in this game. It’s generic. When I die I want to die in an interesting way, not a drab copy paste animation.

For a game that pays so much attention to detail they really dropped the ball on this aspect.

That can be said for anything that has something to do with combat in general, be it animations, class/job design or even dungeons,trials and so on as well. I only hope that Squeenix will slow down on the sidecontent one day and pay more attention to that matter, since there is alot of things that should be adressed.

Theoretically, they could change the actual animations to the play dead emote animations. (Well... maybe have the male Lalafells end up in a different pose.)

I was thinking about this yesturday as well, why do we have play dead animations when they could of used them as race specific death animations? instead of the boring defaulty as hell single death animation for every race and gender.

I'd rather not die ass up thank you very much.

You don't need a death animation when your healer is a murder hobo with rescue in any fight with ledges!

But in all seriousness, I'm still a bit confused by the generic dying animation being for everyone, and from what I remember many enemies that are humanoid.

I think it was a cost saving measure back then, but if they have the time and budget to make emotes to sell in the mog station surely they can fix this. I just think people haven't made a fuss about it enough for them to take notice.

It's probably because no one wants to be overly morbid or anything, but dying is part of the game and they should pay attention to it. Just ask the people of Sims 4 what happened to EA when they removed the ability to die by drowning. They threw a giant fit.

It's pretty bad. And very slow to activate the animation

They should switch to rag dolls. The YouTube compilations alone would be worth the inconvenience of ragdolling off a boss battle edge

I never noticed honestly, and the animation work it'd take to give each pc model their own death animation IMO would be better spent on new emotes instead. Wouldn't mind if they just replaced the current animation with the /playdead one though.

I wouldn't hold my breath since they downgraded characters' walk/run/stop animations in general, on purpose, for no sensible reason, when working on 2.0.
The animations aren't even missing from the game since you can see the momentum is still there in cutscenes dating as far as the first few at the start of ARR.

IIRC the only time they tweaked animation for the better was when they changed some of the Lalafel animation... Which of course, is the most popular race among JP players.

I'd rather them delicate the resources to more playable content. Battle instances, job balancing, crafting, overworld events. Death animation seems pretty appropriate to me, you don't do a fancy dance when you die. You just fall down, because you are dead.

Literally who cares about the death animation... There are many more things that matter on the animation/graphics side: new skill animations, revamping the boring ARR animations, revamping the boring vanilla race animations (give some attention to Highlanders and Roegadyns for once).

Obviously there are people that do. And some game devs as well. Take a look at League of Legends and even though the have a million characters each one has a unique death sequence. Seems to me if they revamp animations they could also take a look at the ones they havent touched. You ever been in a raid wipe where everyone dies at the same time? and looks exactly identical doing so? it's a bit jarring.

Yes, but same funds and company. Either way though I agree, resources could be better used elsewhere. Some emote voices aren't even well synched with movements, and we could always use prettier looking skills.

It would take them, worst case scenario, two weeks to get the animations done. You're being way overdramatic over nothing.

Just don’t die

If every race got its own death animation, people would complain they want the animation from race x on race y. Or demand an option to chose which animation they want for their character.

So? People complain about starting race gear and not being able to equip other jobs attire already. Nothing is going to change on that front, and it shouldn’t be a deterrent to develop something objectively more diverse.
