What improvements would you like to see in the environment?

Greetings!

So I'm making this thread to see what ideas you have for the game's environment, any additions, changes and improvements.

I'll start with:

I would like it if I would meet sometimes regular, sometimes rare and legendary NPC that travel throughout the zones/world that:

• Give us story/lore and/or game tips and sometimes secrets when spoken to.
• Would be a vendor for useful items and sometimes rare items or maybe just a repair.
• Give us a buff of maybe stats and exp boost when spoken to. A random example is a passing by Hyur in a destitute outfit crying for help, when given a small amount turns out it was a legendary Paladin who was testing our goodness, it's time to reward me with a buff, as a blessing for being kindhearted. :D
• Could be a special/rare FATE NPC walking around the zone/world at specific times like either only in the night (A Ghost?) or perhaps other times.
• Plays a special song/music while passing by around the zone/world.
• Causes climate change while passing by, like it rains or snows or it becomes foggy or misty until that character goes away or is maybe killed? Or perhaps grows plants and roses while walking in the area, that die and wither away as that character moves on?
• Walks around the zone/world and camps, sleeps and can be found better through that but cannot be interacted with cause he's sleeping? Great.. we manage to find him except that he's now sleeping and we have to wait for him to wake up, or maybe we can wake him up with an /emote? What if only a few players has that specific emote?
• Would actually notice where it last saw my character at and mentions the location.

They can be not necessarily all over the place but just a few here and there traveling around would be nice.

Second:

I'd like it if NPC in the game would react to my or other players' character when nearby. A few examples:

• A few beasts that run away in fear when my character goes close by, starts aggro when attacked.
• An NPC that does an emote at the closest player character.
• An NPC that suddenly follows a player's character for some reason. Like an animal looking for a treat? A ghost haunting? A child being playful?

Please share your ideas and what you'd like to see added to the environment. :)

I'd like the invisible walls removed. If I wanna run over the edge, I wanna run over the edge and fly into my cyberdeath. Also fall-damage. Yes. I'd absolutely would love jumping down somewhere and having that Ohhh shieeeet- moment and the feeling of regret, while flailing like a stone before my certain destruction.

Also, to your idea above - sounds pretty neat actually. Maybe also make some more "hard" to find and gimme a achievement and a title for actually finding that NPC.
Actually, on that matter - I wish they would steal some stuff from WoW. Getting the weirdest achievements there was actually pretty fun to do.

Just more things overall to interact with and explore in the world, I feel like the team flirts with the idea of inconsequential exploration with little things here and there, but I've yet to see them fully lean into it.

Even though they already said no I still think it would have been cool to add stuff like CEs to the overworld. Maybe also random treasure chests and stuff like that.

I recall 1.0 had something like this. Sight aggro worked differently depending on the mob type.
Timid mobs would run away unless you actually started fighting them. Curious ones would come up to you but only to check you out, maybe sniff you lol. They wouldn't attack unless you did. And aggressive ones would just start beating you up.

I do miss things like that, removed for the sake of simplicity. :(

Nothing. It seems like a big waste of resources.

More interaction between creatures - it aggrevate me that certain hostiles attack you together, but not each other. Like why do Chocobos and marlboros attack you together?? (don't think it happen anywhere, but you get the point)
Roaming heards of animals.
We got fish tanks, would be cool if you could see those fishes in the water where you find them.
DoL NPCs Roaming around gathering stuff.
Ya, reacting to your character, it would be nice if some animals showed curiosity also, like cats/dogs coming up to you, and you can Pet them or such. Emoting NPCs, and they emote back. Kids running around with minions.
Seasons.

Seasonal content, like Feast, but with normal zones. I was thinking past few days it would have been cool when ARR started, that getting past Garleans fortresses should have been more of a combat oriented version of Ishgard restoration, but instead you help Craft supplies and items for raiding. So higher level content is gated for everyone, until server clear that Gate, so you can progress in story. And in current story, it would have been cool if whole server was more engaged in dealing with what's going on, instead you just pop into a 1man instance, and deal with the whole problem by yourself. Maybe a bit like Eureka/Bozja where you farm Fates, but with everywhere the towers popped up, and Lunar Primals showing up as S ranks.

Roaming Odin used to be a thing, would have been nice with more of that. Like let's say Garuda appear, and start rampaging through Black Shroud, attacking settlements and Gridania, and server need to stop her before she destroy everything - then you get seasonal event to repair the damage.
This would be nice with above content too, with Garleans raiding resistance camps, and players help fight them back.
To go a few steps further into wishful thinking, they could keep changing the Geography of the maps, to keep it interesting.
Just an excuse to do another calamity and remake the game again in Unreal Engine 5, to utilize Nanite and megascans. Well also the current one is really limiting.

Add new zones to old states, like lv 50-90 in Shroud/Thanalan/Limsa.

There's so much stuff they "could" do ^^ with infinite budget, and 0 development time.

This sorta exists. Some FATES cause special weather like Gloom in the Shroud when Odin is abroad.

I'm glad you're not a dev lol. It's not wasted resources if it improve the game. You could say anything is wasted resources, like male Viera, gold saucer, triple triad, relic weps.

A more interactive world, in 1.0 some of the monsters had extra personalities like Snurbles (big fluff balls) might cure you, Goobbues may eat mandagora, etc. Critters whose purpose is to add life to the area but not be killed (not every squirrel needs to die SE lol, add some butterflys more often). On that not all monsters need to be aggressive, or the same type - it's true many wont notice the difference in aggro type but it's still a cute touch even if it's no longer emphasized so hard like an old school mmo. Includes some sort of faction system where it makes sense (like how goobbue eat mandgora). The Pixie swing actually functioning would be neat, the train tracks in thanalan actually having a train that functioned. Improving collision detection such that there are far less to no objects that have a generic "can't be here" shield, like some tents you just can't land on (usually related to beast tribes, maybe they can use localized phasing if the need, but not just beast tribes), removing invisible walls whenever possible. Was mentioned in greater detail in another thread but utilizing their new fate system but turning it into a zone context, allowing you to improve the fate of the zone (pun not intended)- when it says you make the place safer then it should show that (like the broken down houses getting some workers to repair it, and progress on that over the stages). Chocobo hot and cold / archeology (one being a repeatable mini-game the other taking that mini-game and add some one time opportunities), other chocobo content also welcomed. FATEs/monsters sometimes dropping chests or quests (that mix up your gameplay loop).

Secret quests and interactions, some useful, some cute. Legend of Zelda secret quest in WoW comes to mind, a quest that you had to start by dying and talking to an npc lol. Like perhaps if you pray at all the twelve stones something happens, or if you pray at yours on it's particular representation. Cave that can be uncovered by a quest, or maybe DoH, might find a underground hotspring that gives you a buff while in the area. Camps that you can rest at for like buffs (generally taking some of the best road trip / camping ideas from FFXV, that are possible would be neat- camping/tents imo are pretty FF in general). Buffs can be neat things too like double duration sprint, faster recovery, change your appearance, w.e. On secrets it would also be trying to add some element of mystery to an area, like plants may start to glow, fire flies appearing around, the water starts to trickle into the air (rivers dry up as it fills the sky), etc.. alien and at least the first experience being this absolute "WHAT THE.. .. THAL.. ?!?!". Large tower in the zone, mist rolls in hyper thick down the mountain wall like a tsunami, low rumble, fog slowly fades again to reveal the tower has moved cross the zone and is facing a different direction.

Weather effects can help, and do help, first time you get the special weather for example in North Shroud is like "waaat?". So I absolutely encourage using weather to tell a story too. Perhaps a zone is known for flash floods, so actually have that. Torrential rain that comes in as a thick wall from a specific direction, or a sandstorm, so you get that cool experience as it comes at and over you.

In discussion of weather improvement to graphics related could help, like wet shaders that give the impression of pools of water built up and evaporate. Snow can build up as well. Deformation in the steps you take in snow would be quite cool. Should be rare, to not be frustrating as all heck, but might have some weather effect your character (hyper snow storm makes it slower to move, not by much just enough to make you go "oh wowwwwww" lol). Improved water to gain a 3d element, ripples, etc. Volumetric fog and elements added to clouds (if it keeps their pretty appearance at least), would be great to use by mountains and other certain areas. Improved lighting could help, especially next to improved fog and clouds having the light change as it passes through different materials (include plants for extra subtle beauty). The current flora is not bad but could be improved in detail (includes ground cover flora like flowers and grass), and perhaps gain physics like when you walk past them or cast big damage spells (especially neat if the weather can utilize that for great effect). Not sure how many could use it but ray tracing in certain situations would probably be eye popping, like stained glass areas, reflections of course, particularly computer melting benchmark testing area would be Mor Dhona and all that crystal lol.

Not entirely related to environment but, part of it, bringing some role play mechanic to jobs that encourage identity of each job without damaging combat balance. Like Dragoons being able to jump much higher (to avoid annoyance it can be as simple as tapping vs holding jump, or a toggle), in zones they've unlocked flying, and take no fall damage. Maybe one mage can cast slow fall, another stand atop water, etc. Try to rework movement abilities so they don't purely skim the ground, if possible (like if you're a ninja and you blink, maybe it might calculate a basic height and distance and if that line drawn to the point was acceptable it would just blink you to said location- meaning you could blink yourself onto a roof top in Kugane for example- this, like dragoon jump, may need a "if you can fly" and "near vista?" check though, perhaps for ninja it would also count town and wouldn't teleport them right on top of vistas lol). This relating to other concepts too, like crafters would gain a lot more goof items, goof potions for alchemist, etc. Things that are just for the fun of it.

Going off comment of ninja and dragoon though would be trying to make the movement smoother (through any means possible, like improved animation / animation blending and canceling) - trying to make the act of moving itself more enjoyable. Perhaps some more opportunities, with the improved collision detection (ie not the kugane tower where you stand on nothing to get to the next step lol), to use all of that- some more opportunities to get around (before flying makes it all up and down).

Personal desire to see hunts get a bit of a rework twist on them where the living variant drops one more reward from the loot table, yet on death they leave a void mark / pyre fly (FFX) mark that you can interact with to get a rough estimation since death (quality of the spirits in location), and can use that area to kindle a fight to help purify the area (or calm the spirit)- these fights you can optionally weaken the spirit further but each stage down reduces the loot (but obviously makes them easier). The fights getting a classic screen shattering and phasing the area to your group, or self. Encouraging hunting competition while also prevent a true damage to players being able to loose opportunity to take part in hunt content due to whatever reason, slow pc, cross server train of doom, etc (also broadens it up). Bring unique items back to NMs, now that they're far more accessible, these items doing cool theme'd effects and working very well as 'heirloom' / leveling items (but not replacing the current tier's end game).

More world bosses, like Odin, etc, but also with more involved with them- like with Odin his spear may be found in a separate location charging up, players can find and prevent it from returning to Odin to remove some of his move set, meanwhile Odin before being pinned down can make great leaps around the map (generally just within a ring around where found, but still pretty serious leaps that includes damage)- DoH / DoL can work together at node stations to create an aether dome that prevents Odin from moving around as freely, occasionally a node will be marked by Odin and he'll call down spirits to attack that node and so some players will have to break away to help. Multiple phases, much longer fight, but multiple phases rewarding players so it's not end of the world if you can only participate in certain parts.

Open world would obviously not be feasible but removing the border between some areas that can be would be neat (like the two Limsa(s)). If they want to add airships, yes please, they can have leaving the borders of zones, ideally, seamlessly move you into a world map (like other classic FF games), and you can then fly out of one zone into the world map and into another all with a seamless like experience (can use something close to what is used for water transitions, for some it'll be near instant, others might need some wind gushing by lol).

It's not realistic in an MMO though, since there's so many PCs with potentially unique animations, glamours etc going on. With UE5 though, nr of polygons would be irrelevant, but not sure how that translate to characters. But in general with MMOs, you need to tone down everything to a minimum so more ppl can play it with lower-end Systems. 1.0 was severely unplayable for me. I think my graphics card broke because of 1.0. I tried to use max settings to take screenshots during last days, but i got like 1 frame/min or such.
It would be so awesome to see these things though.
It's a bit funny though, how we marvel more at game geometry than what we see IRL, esp in VR :D it's like seeing everything for the first time, again.

Pretty sure Mor Dhona ray tracing can become the new crisis lol, but some of the ideas I think might be fine so long as it came with frame supporting features. Like one thing that can be done is high detail animations gaining "self, party, all" just like the spell effects. I have spell effects outside of party off just for a better visual experience, I've a 3090 so.. that's not an issue.. I just think it looks bad when I can see everyone doing their thing lol.

I imagine there are also some cheap shortcuts, like if we imagine 1,000 players making the plants bounce around via physics that sounds like an awfully stressful thing for the pc.. yet WoW and GW2 have this feature (for self at least). So I imagine there are ways to get around certain problems.

Obviously something like ray tracying a hunt train would just be.. @_@... "hey guys look at my new space heater" while the sound of your fans approach jet engines lol. There would have to be some bias options, or some would really not be realistic and just for enthusiasts.

I've not tried VR yet but I'm excited to :3. Also it's funny indeed, I know looking at those photogrammetry graphics in some games and going woooooowww.. but .. it's based on real life and I don't go wow for that hahaha XD (usually, I mean there are some beautiful places in nature of course, but a standard photogrammetry forest vs a standard real life forest and most people are probably going to drool at the video game :p).

Probably because we already have hunts. Although I'd love if they make at least the S-rank ones work like CE, with the special area.

I think in the interview with Mr. Happy Yoshi-p said it was because they approach the bosses in the same way they do dungeon bosses and it would ultimately take too much time to make enough for every zone or something like that. But you're not wrong that hunts sorta fill that role I just don't find them mechanically as interesting as the CE bosses.

Yeah and even ones that would actively help you. Those little snurbles or whatever they're called for example tossing protect or cure on you if your health got low...

Simplicity sucks. Makes everything so dull and boring

They could do something cool and bring back something akin to hamlet defence. or maybe even a hybrid style content between hamlet defence and something like beseiged in ffxi.. where settlements repeatebly come under attack and players work together to repair them or bolster up defences and stuff like that. Things that would actualy change the world in meaningful ways you travel to a settlement and its basically been ransacked so you can get on your gatherer or crafter and either go gather supplies to help rebuild it and fortify it. or as a dow/dom go out on a rescue mission to find and rescue any citizens taken in the attack.

Something like this could eally bring the open world to life and make it evolve in some fashion.. You've just finished gathering your zodiac stuff only to go to hyrstlill and find Gerolt has been abducted. welp gotta go rescue him.... hundreds of little things they could do to add some life to the world

The issue fates have is they're just empty brainless zergs. of whack it till its dead. boring dull and lifeless.

The thing I find strangest of all. FFXI is over 20 years old and some of its code was literally written in the 90s. and yet Vana'diel is or at least was when I played this living, breathing, ever changing dynamic world, with various systmes like besieged, campaign, garrison, even the conquest system always changing the world in some way and the effects of these systems were spread far and wide accross the game..

If a nation lost control of an area to beastmen or even another nation then vendor stocks and prices would change. this in turn would affect the global auction house prices and the economy as a whole. It would also affect your travel options and various other things.. If that outpost was overrun by beastmen. there goes your warp home... iIf you lost beseiged say good by to the astral candescnece and all its benefits. Oh you cant even hire a chocobo as the npc got abducted in the attack so gotta hoof it where your going on foot. All things that made the world feel more alive.

Hell even just having to wait 5 minutes for an airship. along with the real time flights. you could be on an airship and see the world below as you flew over. at the same time people in the zones you were flying over could look up and actually see the airship you were on flying by...

20 year old code and its actually quite amazing what they managed to achieve and it makes eorzea look stale and dead in comparison.

Add to that things like dynamic zones that change all the time like the sacrarium where the maze has a different way through every hour. the toramai canals mage gate. weighted gates in altepa. 3 taru to open or one galka.. so many little things that made the world more interesting.

Ok so quoting myself but TLDR I just want the enviroment to feel alive somehow. I still find it amusing how living and dynamic Vaandiel was in XI with code written 20 years ago.. and Eorzea is this static dead lifeless emptiness

You can walk out of ul dah for example and literally walk all the way to ala migo and see nothing going on anywhere. Despite covering half the world.. lifeless...

Yeah current hunts are not really comparable to CEs. Some CEs can easily be a normal raid or trial encounter.

Take those field notes that have been dropping in Bozdja and the Nier raid in that collections tab and expand to literally everything everywhere.

Seasons.

• During the Spring, the Black Shroud should be vibrant and colorful. Parts of Thanalan should have healthy green grass and moss and flowers. Coerthas' snow should be thawing.

• During the Summer, the Black Shroud should be a dull green, like it is in the game today. Some streams will be dried up. Thanalan should be dry like it is in the game today. Streams of water in Thanalan and Gyr Abania should be almost completely dried up. Coerthas' snows should have melted and it should be a rocky, mountainous place with dry grass.

• During the Autumn, the trees of the Black Shroud should be shedding colorful leaves.

• During the Winter, there should be snow across most of the land. Even parts of Thanalan and Gyr Abania should be covered in snow (see pictures of snow in the Arizona desert). There should also be streams of water running through Thanalan and Gyr Abania.

Give us the ability to go into houses and buildings again, even if they aren't used for quests. I've been playing this game since 2016 and I'm still finding new places to go inside in the ARR zones, it makes the world feel more alive.

Let me land on any flat surface, not just the ones that were reachable without flying. If I fits, I wants to sits.

I'd like to see what they did in Zadnor.

Except the complete opposite.

Yes people will come and say "It's supposed to be a devastated warfare zone of course it'll look like crap", but that doesn't mean it can look like interesting crap. Zadnor lacks any ruined buildings or structures like Bozja had, any ruined fortress, or man hole, an abandoned factory or village, a river or lake or any significant landmark. What we got looks more barren than a 1999 Counter Strike map.

I enjoy hunts, but I wish there were some legitimately "rare" ones with unique rewards and extremely prohibitive (But still predictable) spawn conditions that make their appearances a really big deal.

It seems like a waste to have all these fancy weather effects in each zone when they're only used for a handful of rare fish past ARR.

I'd like to see:

- Various small animals that can be seen but not attacked in places that make sense. You might see a snake slithering about in a dark cave, rats scurrying on a pier and a cat lurking on a rooftop. Stuff like that adds a lot of realism to a game world and MMO's much older than FFXIV manage to do it just fine.

- More buildings that can be entered and explored. The ARR settlements have a lot of neat buildings that can be entered, including taverns that are there purely for immersion rather than quests.

- Rare NPC's that hand out special minions, housing items and the like. Sort of like how there's that NPC in Western La Noscea that exchanges items for a Wind Up Sun and a Wind Up Moon.

I’d like to see more npcs in zones period. ESO does this very well where you can find npcs basically all over, exploring areas and everything. Maybe have some special npc interactions that are randomly generated in zones and stuff. Just things to make certain areas feel more alive. Maybe see something like in Raktika, some Viera tribeswomen hunting animal mobs. Things like that.

I'd like to see seasons, and new areas added to the older zones, I mean everything below the latest expansion is basically forgotten every major expansion, ARR-SHB zones will stay as they are, and only new things will come in EW zones. Except maybe new materials to gather.. and new FATE's.. maybe. So I'd like to see them devote an entire expansion to populating the ARR-SHB areas with new zones, new quests, new towns, new enemies etc. So that if you decided you wanted to play the game again from the start, you would experience a lot of new content. Of course, Square-Enix don't want you to do this, their answer is "you have NG+ and fantasia, you don't need to play the game again" which i think is a missed opportunity, they might make more cash if they gave you a reason to play through again.

Most MMO's (and this is not really a complaint, just an observation) seem to focus all their efforts on end-game content, like keeping their long term players happy is the ONLY important thing to them. A lot of folk complain there's not enough new raids and such at end-game.. well you get a lot more content than low to mid game gets lol, can we have some new 20-70 optional dungeons maybe?

It can be a rare black market NPC that appears on specific times in specific places or maybe travels around, selling special items for a specific currency, if not gil?

Well, I personnaly would like it if the weather itself had physical/mental effects on the characters using the gods...

for example if we choice a god with the water nature (we get a small boost during Rain/ or water related weather..

Also .. Personally id like the environment to show us the fish we catch instead of a white light lol ... and for the love that is all unholy.. Bring back ffxi fisher guild npc that you could sell fish to for gil... (like seriosely)

People have wanted butt sliders for awhile. Maybe give the environment a butt slider.

+1 to more NPCs doing “stuff” in towns and open world. GW2 does a great job at this and it makes the world feel very alive.

For me, I wouldn’t mind seeing smaller, more intricate zones. Or zones that just have a lot of details shoved everywhere.

I would also like more open world “adventure”; places that are very dangerous to wander around in and will most certainly result in death..but also there are great rewards to be found.

Also, controversial, but I would like the world to just be more lethal in general. It’s absolutely a relic of “the old days”, but I really enjoyed the stress and payoff of dungeon delving in FF11. Lots of cat and mouse with mobs!

Finally, easy one: have the fishing voyage actually move through the sea and not park.

Weather
clouds that look more 3D like the ones at Yanxia, or if not just more cloud "backgrounds." It's really noticeable when they use the same ones everywhere

Fates/Skirmishes/Critical events/Primal or Boss events

On a lower scale they should create "Primal/Boss" or "large scale" world events that require us to do a certain amount of fates to spawn (similar to Dalraida). But instead of something that takes you to another instance it would be more similar to a critical event so it would appear on the open world and people queue to it like a critical event.

The idea would be that doing enough fates would summon a big critical event like Ifrit himself around Thanalan or whatever new primal they're adding to Endwalker. But it doesn't have to be limited to primals, it could also be waves of monsters/beasts or waves or Hyuran thieves or sometimes it could be a critical event that has a chain of critical events that follow each other; other types of critical events could happen at the same time also depending on the zone.

In general just have more big scale events in the open world outside of Hunts; bonus points if it makes sense for the world for the event to keep repeating. Summoning Ifrit for example is something that has a reason to happen on a repeat basis. Same with random thieves, or a wave of Dodos who have gone on a frenzy because the Dodo fate has been done 99 times and they've had it.

Well I would love if the maps would have more normal wild life in them. Maybe some cute birds flying around and other smaller critter going on with their lifes. Then maybe a few more NPCs going on their daily route.
On top of that it would be lovely to have animals/monsters out there that are passive. I have a hard time believing that normal npcs would survive out there if everything is just aggro.

It would also be great if we could find a certain amount of notes in each dungeon. This could give us more lore.

+1 for this.

Small carriages or transport vehicles that move in the world and move around in the zone, and not instanced. And people can get onboard and move along with said vehicles. It will give the area more life i think.

Time & Weather

A calendar :) At character creation engine the last few section requires us to select our WoL birthdate. It’d be nice to see -that- calendar actually go in motion in relation to Eorzea Time (ET). And while you’re at it, throw in the four seasons and adjust how it affects each area’s weather. (I.e cold weather in winter turns into snow/blizzard, but in summer it’ll just turn into rain/thunderstorm depending on where it occurs.

I'd like to see as I venture through a zone, a giant world boss passing by flying over my head or walking around causing a shaking on the ground or causing a climate change or just a change in the atmosphere.. That feel of something serious is passing by in the sky or on the ground nearby..

The feeling Breath of the Wild gave me when one of those dragons passes by.. just beautiful. I also want to feel the same thing in this game. Although with something peaceful who has no mind for the player. :3

As for my own ideas, I think that we need more colors. One thing that makes me happy about the upcoming expansion is the inclusion of more color on Thavnair. We need the game to go a bit beyond its usual pallet. ESPECIALLY in the deserts. Places like Ivalice, and Ahm Araeng always look way better than Uldah did. It also doesn't help that the Sagoli desert is much prettier.

I'd also like it if the humanoid mobs would look like they are busy with things, like they are conversing or interacting with each other, something like they are talking, having arguments or maybe looking busy working with stuff, at least just doing emotes.

And I want to see objects that move in the environment, like a fruit falling from a tree, and perhaps I can right click on that fruit and gain a buff, just like eating from food for buff from my inventory.

I also hope to see small animals, flying butterflies (like the ones on the Spriggan mount), dragonflies and other bugs in the outdoors.
