If possible, can we please have the option to put a note for friends in the friend list? We get to add many players to our friend list and sometimes I forget things about them that I'd prefer to have typed in a note for them. I found this to be very useful in another MMO game and I'd be happy if it was also available in FFXIV.

It would be helpful, but what you can do is make several categories to describe how you met them and assign them that.
I have one for new players, one for unsynced content, one for savage, one for hunters, one for linkshell/free company and one for friends. I find assigning them these categories helps me remember how I know them if it's been a long time. I assign it based on how I found them so linkshell/free company takes priority over the others. -

That would be great. I mean, I have several friends who are addicted to change their character names, and every time I got confused, and I end up excluding them from the friends list, because I don't know who they are.

If someone on my friends-list takes an extended break, when they come back we can pick right back up where we left off.

I support this suggestion. Like some of the previous replies, I have resorted to creating friend groups (one for those I've met via FC, those I've met via mentorship/NN, those from content like Eurka, HOH and PotD, etc.) It helps when I try to narrow down when remembering who is who. The problem occurs when players change names. In the last two weeks, I ran across three players who are in my friend list and I am sure they changes their names yet I don't know them (one was actually from my FC who switched to another FC).
I know this would be low in impact and low in priority in comparison to the many other stuff that the devs are working on, but this would be a nice QoL. -

The most common problem is definitely renames. A lot of people become lalafells and use a lalafell name and there is no chance I know who they are after that.

My gawd, to echo about name-changes, this has been a huge issue with me. I take breaks usually for a patch cycle (.3 or .4 being when I just burnout or decide to drop the subscription to focus on single-player games that releases) and when I return half the people on my friendlist, which is almost full, have changed their name and I have no idea who the heck is who. I've contemplated just cleaning out my friendlist and starting over because it's difficult to strike up conversation when I have no idea who this one dude is out of two-hundred thanks to a name-change and possibly a fantasia.
I've taken to using symbols too, for determining how I met them but honestly, that doesn't narrow it down enough. Being able to put a note on them, literally me just tagging "this is X" would be extremely helpful. -

Agreed. I meet a lot of people since I server hop and hang around a lot, and unfortunately after a few months later, I just have no idea who they were and how we met I can't just SAY that so if they spot me I immediately pretend to be afk, so I don't have to ask "Who are you again??" as that comes off rather rude.
