Got the same problem. Have never had any problems in the past, this is the first time.
I even went into the version patch download file and deleted what it had downloaded and forced the game to redownload. I got the same error.
The patch file is located in:
C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\my games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\48eca647\patch
My system:
Windows 7 64bit
AMDx6 Black Edition 3.2
XFX ATI Radeon 6970 2gig
ASUS Crosshair V Formula
16 gig RAM
Corsair 90gig SSD
Seagate 1tb HDD
Connection:
Comcast Cable internet
Same here, Error shows up at installing ~99.6%.
I really don't want to dump and reinstall, but it IS an option at the moment...
Another option is that it is a 5hr update. It could be that we don't have all of the needed files yet.
That's not it, a lot of people I've talked to are already completely finished. This just seems to be one of those random problems and we hit the lottery :P
I tried redownloading as well and it did not work.
I remember some people getting this error before. the solution was temporarily disabling any active virus scanning software.
Yeah i downloaded succesfully and no problems, I run comcast as well.
If I ventured a guess, not that I know shit, its probably a file corruption of some sort. The only viable option to me seems like a reinstall of the game and all of its files, but obviously thats not desirable. If you start now, you should be done around patch time and can attest as to whether that is a viable solution.
EDIT: Oh yeah like that guy said, if you have AV running turn it off. All of it. Norton, Windows, whatever crap anti viruses you have running. They will fuck up your downloads. If that doesn't work, then try a reinstall of everything.
There's some other threads when you search for that Error. Some people did reinstall and it didn't help I think...
Haven't found any solution either. Might just have to wait until tomorrow. (2 a.m. here :D)
Edit: Tried with AV/Firewall off, didn't help.
I always get errors when I dl a new patch. I just click ok and the administration settings pop up to continue the patch install.
Just got home from work and I have this ridiculous Error, I downloaded through patcher and didnt work... I downloaded through uTorrent... didnt work... this is great! And they expect us to welcome back players with this... Exciting!

I just got the error when the Installer was at 100%. (Means it's fully installed, maybe.)
There's a way to skip the Updating, by changing the game.ver to 2012.04.23.0001 with Editor.
Can't check if it works until Server are up though and I'll be sleeping by then.
Might be a solution.
I remember getting a error like this like 5-6 updates back. And it had something to do with the patch version number that's in a file that was editable. We had to change that date to today's date, or something and it patched fine after that. Anyone remember that? im gonna see if i can find it, or try to find the file. if i find the solution before someone posts ill post it.

About Error
Here is one solution that involved manually changing the game ver to the correct version. It may or may not work, but apparently it worked for these ppl. There's another thread that explains the process in more detail here

It solved the error problem. However, can't tell if it'll work until servers are up.
Finally worked !
Solution for me: I did swap the Chocobo Music DATs a while ago. Replaced it with the original Backups I had. Worked !

guys i finally got in by changing boot and gae to the proper date!
Simple go to to
C:\\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\Final Fantasy XIV\game.ver
Open the file with word pad, or a simple text editor and change the version to today's patch. Should fix any errors
Why is this happening to only some of us? I have UAC off and full administrative access to everything - had my AV off too. Had to modify the game.ver file to get the patch to go through.
I have this error too, changed the game.ver to 2012.04.23.0001 which is the same as the patch file but no luck? :/
Okay, I got it working.
I changed the dates in the game/game.ver file to 2012.04.23.0001.
I had to reinstall my game overnight to see if i would fix the probelm, hopefully it does.
Anyone who got this error, being completely honest, have you not swapped any files on your game? It seemed like this was common among people that swap music and stuff. Idk if that's the connection.

when you changed date in notepad save it on desktop then copy and paste on ffxiv files and replace the old file.

Weird, idk I've always had a couple songs switched around. I really like cid's theme, i have it playing in limsa lol. Also i loved the theme they had for uldah what 8 months back? So i got that one back, and I like the old chocobo theme(like most) so i have that one swapped as well. I also receive this error every 4-5 updates(I received the error this time). And changing the version in the file fix's my issue. So I just assumed it was related to dat swapping.
Altho I will admit that I did restore my backup of the original dats and still had a error, but i did not delete the entire update and try to redownload/update.
Alright this error is killing me. I had a virus on my pc and had to system restore, so I reinstalled XIV no problem and got this error. So there was no .dat swapping done.
I have tried changing the dates in the game and game.ver files, but what that does is let me log on as if I had the update to the title screen, but then when it goes to character selection screen it says "you require an update to play" and closes the client. If anyone can help I would appreciate it...
