Could we ever get Dye Channels?

The dye system is pretty good at the moment but I'm sure many have dyed gear only to see it chabge parts of the outfit you didn't exactly want changed or barely dye the piece at all. Dye channels would essentially allow someone to dye multiple or each individual section of a desired piece of gear or glamor.

I'm not entirely sure on the feasibility of such an implementation, seeing as it would require going back through alot of older gear, (however the team has said they've made plans to improve the textures overtime in the future so best time would be around then I'd say) but I'd like to perhaps one day see such a system in XIV.

Whilst I'd love it and think it'd make for a good dying system, like I think GW2 did it pretty well. I feel this is the kind of thing that'd be an overhaul from the ground up. But I wouldn't object to the system being implemented, it being used on new gear and gradually rolled out to old gear.

But then the other side of me realises they can technically give Viera and Hrothgar hair and hats and on the hair front it was something we were expecting rollouts of, it's this details that makes me think they wouldn't as I guess they have their artists working on other assets.

That said, I support the idea.

And for more items to be dyable that aren't....like the scion sets or the nomad ones or the new Amaal'ja ones.

GW II dye system would be glorious, but I'd settle with at least not making the entire piece change color when dyed, specially if it dyes in washed out tones or changes the texture.

Only wrench in this system outside of the resources is baubles or attachments that certain gear has like the potions on certain caster robes or the bags on the Bozja and newer ishgard gear which I'm not sure change with dye at all and would have to be reworked if such a system would exist

Any upgrade to the glamour system would be whole heartedly welcome.
The glamours system is pretty embarrassing, especially considering it's #trueendgame.

While it's true they no doubt have their main artists working on more important things (like 6.0 gear designs), reworking old gear item by item is the kind of grunt work that can be outsourced to minimum wage art interns. You'd still need a full time project manager supervising them and coordinating them and verifying that the quality is acceptable, but given the resources that SE has these days, it shouldn't be difficult to put someone in that sort of position from within the company.

Hell, at this point they could hypothetically crowd source it and the mod community would do it for free.

While I support the idea, Yoshi has stated it won't happen. If I remember correctly, his view is that the art team has their vision for how the gear should look and adding dye channels to override that vision would be disrespectful of that vision.

I'd love it but... limitations.

For now, I'd love if some pieces would keep some parts of it neutral when dyed.

White under shirts, leather straps... no need to dye EVERYTHING green.

Would be nice but knowing Square Enix its not happening.

Probably the worst argument he could have come up with, especially considering how awful gear design since SB is. Art team is already disrespecting us with creating the same boring gear for each category.

Its the worst on my asura caster gear, id love to dye it properly black but that taints the metal pieces.... >_>

It's the sort of thing that would exponentially increase the amount of data every character is carrying around. For that alone you'll likely never see this happen.

I've been wanting this for a while... always disappointing to preview, say, a red dye on an item hoping that it dyes to red with white accents only to see that the white turns pink. Being able to dye different parts of an item separately would be fantastic. Also I wouldn't mind if they made it so that you didn't have to actually have the basic dyes in your inventory and had the option to just have it cost gil to apply a dye. Always annoying when you preview a color you like and have to go to an ARR beast tribe settlement to go buy the dye from them to use it.

I’m sure the devs will say “it looks great, but… server bandwidth limitations”.

Sometimes I wish they would fill up the backplane of the server with 100 Gbps cards.

Since healer gear is white more often than not, this tends to be the case, and I hate it. If I wanted half the outfit to be pink I'D USE PINK

Current dye system:
Dyeing something tells the system to use a certain texture when displaying.

"new" system
Proposed "channels" item must be split into "zones" for the textures. Replacing each zoned texture per the dye, increasing the texture data amounts and information necessary for the models to be "zoned".

it's a BIG change that isn't supported by the current system and would require a rework of models and textures.

Neat but unlikely.

Same, but then sometimes there's the problem where the default color has no matching dye. Anything I add on to undyed pieces, then don't match. :(

The dev answer was that it's too difficult. Yoshida said it wasn't really about the memory storage, but about packet payload.

Essentially, FFXIV already maxes out the amount of info that can be used for dye info, whilst maintaining a reasonable gameplay experience.

Is this verbatim? Becasue it sounds like an extremely bad argument, given that some gear pieces can be fully dyed - excelpt in just 01 color (washed in different parts) - and that kind of defeats that argument. This honestly sounds like mistranslation from a JP quote.
