Yea it's pretty bad
It's exceptionally worse than the old font.
It might be due to the lack of outline, but it's just not great. Reminds me of some cheap game that just didn't care about styling.
I know that they improved the resolution for many things including font; maybe that's what's different? Due to the higher res, it looks more "squared" and not as soft/rounded as before that was caused by the lower res.
Well whatever they have done, it is harder to read and frankly looks terrible.
I think it's fine but many seems to dislike it. I wouldn't mind to see they add outline or the option to switch between old and "new".
I rather like it, tbh
So far as I can tell, the font is a vast improvement at high resolutions, like 4k -- and it's definitely more clean and legible on the PS5 in my opinion. But it doesn't seem to scale as well to lower resolutions, and it also doesn't seem to play so well with some graphical post-processing systems (like certain Nvidia Freestyle or ReShade/GShade settings). So for some people the font's going to be crisp, clean, and more easily legible... but for others the change in outline and shape seemingly muddies it a bit and reduces legibility, especially in crowds.
So yeah, they probably could stand to let people toggle between the two fonts.
it's unironically the change introduced in 5.5 I like the most along with the load times improvement
It's terrible, specially with targets that are far away
I hope they give us an option to choose btw the old and the new if this is working as intended
It's sharper but lack of outline to make it pop in busy backgrounds.
I also wish to have a separated option for nameplate name for size scaling especially aside from color.
The first place I noticed the change was in my gil display because of how much less readable it is at the same size settings:

It's...oversharpened? Or not properly interpolated? Or something?
Seems like it lost it's boldness? Like it's now Lucke Arrayo instead of Lucke Arrayo. Maybe that's just me, does it does strain my eyes a bit. Maybe I just gotta get used to it.
I'd like to add on the PS5, if you scale the UI to 150%, on a 4k TV, everything is about perfect, minus the font size on characters, summoning bells, etc, it's just way to big. There is options to increase the size, but not decrease. They really need one or two options for smaller UI font. The two friends that have a PS5 playing on FFXIV have said the same thing. When you increase the UI scale, it blows up the font and is way to big.
The new UI is intended for 4k displays I believe - so while it's available for computers with smaller displays, it's not necessarily like... for that? Correct me if I'm wrong, though. I'm not perfect.
I haven't even seen a difference. Have to look when the Servers come back. But can't be that different when I haven't even noticed after two days of playing
The new 4K UI Setting that you can toggle on or off, has nothing to do with the new font for character names, npcs, targetable objects etc.
There is also no toggle for this font change, you can only currently "fix" this by reverting to DX9. Which I feel is unnecessary for something so simple as this.
I'm not downplaying it's importance though, you literally have to look at the font all the time during play. And while my eyes have adjusted to it a bit better now, there are clear times where it just looks plain ugly and flickers/distorts when moving closer or further away from an object. Also the readability can become poor depending on the colour of the text vs. a light background.
Just got on for the first time since patch day and I agree with others that the new font looks awful. I get for some that there is no issue, they like it, or have adjusted to it but there really should be an option to change between the new font and the old.
On 1440, it looks the same....until I compare to an old screenshot. New font is thinner and crisper, doing some pixel peeping on a fresh screenshot it still has the black outline. I like it. Maybe it's just shite on 1080?
I prefer the look of the old font but my main issue is when you're in a crowded area or just somewhere with several overlapping names. It was much easier for me to read or understand enough of a name to know who and what was going on. New font just creates a massive jumbled mess to me.
the font is less bold on the outline because it's higher resolution, even I made it 150% UI scale - it's a bit too big. I just wish to have it bold and small not skinny font.
