Ray tracing in Final Fantasy XIV

As we update graphics more and more and we are getting closer to saying bye bye to the ps4 and the PS5 can support ray tracing. Can we finally get Raytracing in FFXIV to help with the shadows and reflections? It would make the world that much prettier.

I don't think ps4 will lose support for quite some time yet

Raytracing is the 3D glasses fad of 2008. I stlll remember Sony boasting about 3D technology in their games back then

Raytracing has a decade or longer to go before the hardware is there, much less the adaptation within in game development. A decade later we're better off with a new FF mmorpg using Raytracing.

I disagree. Raytracing makes a HUGE difference. Like I thought it was going to be a fad to, but after experiencing it? Its a big jump

Raytracing is a fad just like 4k or VR. The difference isnt large enough to justify its cost.

There's a big difference between how great of an experience Raytracing is and the physical hardware for it being there, as well as the adaptation by game developers. Games are taking 2-4 years to make now; is Raytracing going to add to that or make it easier?

Ask any game dev, they would probably prefer hardware that makes making games easier as opposed to water puddles reflecting realistic light.

What even IS Raytracing? I hear that everywhere, but it's just a buzzword to me.

First they'd have to up the minimum required specs, and then they'd lose people playing on old potato PCs. Console stopped being the limiting factor when they dropped PS3 support in Stormblood.

I'd love to see raytracing, but I doubt this will be happening anytime soon.
Maybe when 7.0 releases, for I assume it will be by then that ps4 support will be dropped - but no earlier than that.

Raytracing, is a lighting technique. It bounces light off of every object for shadows, lighting, reflections, etc.

Movies have been doing it for years, but it has only been recent that hardware is able to render in real time.

It used to take them hours or days to render a single frame.

Rather dev time go into updated textures over shiny game.

Raytracing does add a lot, but I imagine the devs can think of a whole list of things less computationally expensive to enhance the game.

Raytracing isn't really a fad, and I'd like to see it come later on, but we'd see much more use out of better textures and an option for strong ambient occlusion option.
Honestly, they should just like take a look at what kind of reshade filters people are using (to actually play the game, not to take screenshots) and put those options in. (AO, HDR effects, more minute color adjustments to combat that weird grey filter you start seeing in the unshaded game after looking at a reshaded game for a while)

Whilst I think a cool addition, but raytracing is in its infancy I feel, I mean I don't think it's a gimmick because real time raytracing is kinda the dream for graphical quality. And it's limited to certain hardwave, so I feel a better pay off would be them looking to increase the game's graphical integrity for people who don't have a raytracing card. Plus raytracing can tank the performance.

There is still no HDR implementation in FF XIV (which, by the way, is far more impactful than ray tracing). There was no mention of HDR coming in the PS5 version. Until we have HDR, there is literally no chance of ray tracing.

Ray tracing is not a fad, it can make a big difference in presentation (there is a reason it is used in movies)... But if I had to choose other graphic updates first I would. If I didn't have to choose and could get them all then I would too lol.


Ray tracing in mor dhona would be insane, place to benchmark your pc lol.

How good is Ray at tracing? Maybe we should discuss whether Ray should be drawing instead?

The puddle reflections on the right (ray tracing) are miles better (other parts of the image are affected too but it's more subtle). It's also why I said Mor Dhona could be a computer frying test, if they added ray tracing to all the crystals lol.

That would look incredible, especially during the special weather effect. I imagine it would destroy my 3080 though unless SE added DLSS.

I'd love me some RT, if I could get a GPU that supported it <.<

I don't think the game needs ray tracing to look good. They could do other stuff, like increasing the resolution of the textures, and even changing the lighting of the game. Yes, they don't require ray tracing to change the lighting. The game has this mud filter that makes everything be desaturated and with a greenish brown tint on it. It's very apparent if you use reshade and turn it on and off. They could make the game look so much better by adjusting the lighting and it wouldn't require ray tracing. They said they don't have plans to abandon the ps4. It's still a good console and not a bottleneck for the game.

Some modern AA, DX12 for some damn actual multithreading, and yes, 4k textures would be prime. All this before RT

Also they say that it would raise the system reqs..not specifically. its a toggle option. Only people it would effect are the people who could run it to begin with

Ray Tracing is still on the big beta stage and not really something you should sell a game on.

SSD has been around for active use for years, 4K Gaming has come out of beta stage with the new GFX that both AMD and Nvidia offer, though the RTX is still beta stage.... next resolution for beta stage is 8K.... and with that Raytracing will mature in next generation.

Also the SSD is nice and all but we still have the base PS and wont upgrade that - so ssd is pointless.

Ok improve the horribly low res textures first and then we can talk about Ray Tracing options and HDR support.
The announced PS5 version is a joke. Nothing substantially is improved and the game could already run on PS5 with the backwards compatibility mode.
You could use an SSD with the PS4 already and SSDs in PCs are a thing many many years already.

Totally with you on the textures, probably pretty easy to upscale with AI and get -something better- at least. As for PS5 support, the load times are it afaik, PS4 SSD support is basically useless due to crap SATA support, and I believe how the games are physically allocated on the disk, ie. it doesn't play up to SSD's strength in random seek and reads. I'm on PC and NVME SSD, but also possess both PS$ and PS4 Pro, niether of which benefited much from SSD's in terms of in game load times. As for RT, I doubt we'll ever see it in XIV, no incentive there at all for SE

Aye, do not get me wrong I would all be for ray tracing support or down playing the impact it may have but as mentioned by many others better textures would be an overall larger net gain to the presentation of the game.
