Blue Mage abilities and signs of 6.0 ability mechanics in the Endwalker Trailer

2 of the new Blue Mage spells (Cold Fog and Chelonian Gate) and one of the effects in the recent Endwalker trailer got me thinking about what the tanks might be getting in the expansion.

For those who do not known Cold Fog and Chelonian Gate are spells that give you buffs that when you are either hit or take 30% your max hp in damage transform that spell's button into a powerful counter attack. I suspect these 2 spells are actually tests for upcoming tank abilities in 6.0.

In the trailer the WoL (as a paladin) jumps in front of an injured Alisaie and then proceeds to hit the attacking enemy with a shield bash that makes his shield glow.

Combine these with the rather well received TBN+Dark Arts system of Dark Knight (even if other parts of the job are not as popular) and I suspect that the Blue Mage spells are actually tests for similar abilities we will see on the tanks. We may be getting counter attacks that are linked to various defensive cooldowns and our protection abilities.

While this would be nice, if they took Shield Swipe away from Paladin (which was effectively this), I can't see it happening.

Shield Swipe and the Low Blow/Reprisal procs were more or less removed due to forcing the DRK and PLD into the MT role as they required Parry and Block procs to trigger. Linking the counters to proper use of the protection buffs (Cover/Intervention, TBN, HoS and Nascent Glint) plays more into tank fantasy while allowing them to be used while OTing.

They're doing that anyways with healers, dividing them into puuuure healers and shield healers as sub-roles. They should just do the same with tanks.

Looks like it wont be the case for now, im fearing tank Gameplay Will remain the same brainless thing for Endwalker.

Don't worry about it, it's all but confirmed to remain this way.

I hope not, even if they don't do the same partition on the tank role i hope they make it more engaging and focus more on bring a unique experience with each job like yoship say they will do on healers and not leave behind tanks the entire expansion on the corner.

they already tried to do that when they announced gunbreaker (talking about there being two Main- and two Off-tanks in terms of design), and accomplished absolutely nothing with it (because they go out of their way to make sure that no class is 'filtered' by content, so all content can be feasibly cleared with two 'off-tanks' or two shield healers despite none of their abilities ever stacking, etc).

the healer changes will likely accomplish nothing other than further diluting the healer playerbase and lobotomizing AST yet again; lost it's cards+class lore, lost any reference to time magic whatsoever aside from their mandatory-healer-kit-MP-recovery skill, and now losing nocturnal sect entirely--which raises several questions as to how many of their abilities will work, such as their newer skills like neutral sect and celestial intersection.

Sadly the only difference between is Pld being a really bad Main tank heh, and recommended not to.

The BLU spells aren't really anything new.

Anyone remember Haymaker? Anyone? I can't remember the potency on it. I think it was 180 and inflicted +20% slow, and for PGL/MNK at the time, that was powerful. Only requisite? Evade an attack, so Featherfoot into Haymaker...

Shield Swipe, same diff, only it used to be on the GCD and inflict pacification, while being 210 pot and only costing 40 TP. Long fight, no Bard? Shield Swipe!

They've also got something like the % HP damage taken in Eureka Logos Actions. Can't remember what it is, but it's there.

BLU's less a testing ground, and more a, "Hey, let's use all these mechanics we don't normally allow players to use!" playground.

If they do add back in counter skills for tanks, I assume it'll just be tied to defensives that are tied to a gauge. Like, hey, PLD just used Sheltron. Sheltron duration over > Gain ability to do Shield "Slam" or whatever.

I feel fairly certain that's just a depiction of what Cover would look like in a cutscene or video rather than how it is in a video game

I brought it up when Shield Swipe got turned into a "Next expansion we're culling this" ability, otherwise known as a 'hit as soon as it's lit' OGCD.

On the bright side some sort of higher skill cap have to be introduced if they want to add new abilities to all tanks classes, unless they just add passives that modify pre-existing abilities.
Now on the bad news like people mentioned before it doesn't seem they are striving for class identity

Haymaker, Low Blow, Reprisal and Shield Swipe relied on dodge, parry and block RNG procs in order to be usable. If a fight lacked attacks that could be dodged, parried or blocked could not be fully utilized and required that you either be the primary target or hit by avoidable damage to have a chance of triggering. This is a bit different than what I'm seeing in the BLU spells.

Smite L requires you to be below 50% to use this is different than "take 30% max hp in damage while this buff is up and a defensive cooldown button transforms into an attack."

Cold Fog and Chelonian Gate work a bit different than you think and do not work like the old counter attacks or any of the Logos actions.

Except for the gauge requirement that is pretty much what Cold Fog and Chelonian Gate do:

Cold Fog process:

1. Cast Cold Fog
2. Receive Cold Fog buff with a 5s duration
3. Take Damage
4. Cold Fog buff replaced with Touch of Frost buff with a 15s duration
5. While Touch of Frost is on you, the Cold Fog spell turns into White Death (reusable instant cast 400 potency spell)

Chelonian Gate process:

1. Cast Chelonian Gate
2. Receive Chelonian Gate buff with a 10s duration
3. Take 30% your max hp in damage while Chelonian Gate is up
4. Gain Auspicious Trance buff which is linked to the Chelonian Gate buff
5. While Auspicious Trance buff is up Chelonian Gate turns into Divine Cataract (single use instant cast 500 potency(1000 if mimicing a tank) AoE)

Looked more like Passage of Arms. So this is what I imagine Paladin's new ability to look like:

Potential new Passage of Arms process:

1. Use Passage of Arms
2. Receive Passage of Arms buff with a 18s duration
3. You or an ally under the effect of Passage of Arms takes 30% max hp in damage while Passage of Arms is up
4. Gain Indignation buff which is linked to Passage of Arms buff
5. While Indignation buff is up Passage of Arms turns into Vengeance of Arms (single use instant cast high potency Cone AoE)
