What do you get out of XIV?

First post in a long time. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what you guys get out of playing XIV? I've had friends ask me that question and I can't honestly answer because the last two years or so I've not been able to stop making characters and pick a main. So I turn to you, the community to help me understand what this question means. I just need a little guidance is all. I hope everyone has an amazing and wonderful weekend!

I get a fun game with a lot of things to do.

The question is so vague I can't say much else.

Well aside from the general nice happy escape for a few hours a day from the real world I would say the friendships I have made due to this game. I have made some of my best friends here and honestly I don't know how I would get by without some of them and I really owe them for everything.

After coming home from my stressful job, I get to relax and play this game stress free. I don’t do high end things as the people that run them can be stressful themselves, so I stick to simple things that I find fun like leveling jobs or characters, chatting with people or just exploring the world and see if I can find something new I haven’t noticed. I like doing quests and learning more about the characters in game. I also like the cool glamour pieces that I can get as long as they aren’t pricey and try to make a different outfit. It’s just really relaxing.

I play a lot of games, and it is actually a pretty simple answer. If it is fun, I will continue to play. If it is not, I won't. I happen to find this game fun more often than not. So I guess what I get out of FF XIV is enjoyment? I'm really into MMOs in general though.

Honestly I play it to relax, and to cope. FFXIV has that capability to just put down the game anytime when needed, and there is nothing to rush back to after doing other activities. So that freedom is nice.

Stress .

FFXIV gave me a home. It's a horrible thing to say, but during a year where everyone's lives were so dramatically altered by COVID, FFXIV was the main constant in my life and a place of refuge, and the world may be burning, but in-game, the Chocobo music is still playing, the bikinis are still getting shorter, and Viera hairstyles discussions are still a tangled mess; truly nary a form out of place, and I am so thankful to have this game with me.

It's something I can play around with at work on my laptop and on my PS4 at home; it's pretty much the only AAA MMO out that has crossplay between PS4 and PC.

It's also a good gap-filler/fallback game when there isn't anything else I'm interested in playing, since you never really run out of stuff to do.

And the story is good; it's world, lore and characters are engaging; visuals are top notch for an older MMO; etc.

Putting it bluntly, it gave me an escape from an otherwise mundane time in the world. Aside from that, really, just the companionship of some of the most caring and friendly people I've encountered online. I get to spend time with them and do activities which we're mutually invested in, all whilst getting not only fun but a very significant timesink, which is great!

I have friends on here; I moved halfway across the country and I don't have in-person friends anymore (as I moved shortly before COVID so obviously finding in-person friends has been...lacking and hard to do).
I'm an online college student, and I'm home essentially every day all day...so in other words...I live in Eorzea basically. lol. gives me something to do with my much free time that I have. This game allows me to be social in a time when being social is hard to do right now.

It’s really helping me out with my free time in lockdown.

And before that it was helping me out with free time when life was at a bit of a lull.

When my real life was very busy I barely played if ever. So I’d say it was a time killer that I enjoy.

Escape from the real world and way to unburden stress off my mind by talking to strangers

I get happiness and fun, a familiar place that feels like home, and a tool to unleash my creativity.

In short, this game gives me many good things.

Just a traveler journeying through time.

It's a wide array of entertainment.

When I just want to chill, dungeons, crafting, gathering, or hunts.

When I want a challenge, extremes or Savage.

When I want to stimulate my creative side/thinking side, roleplay.

Then there's horny town.

Currently not much since all my friends are either too busy or otherwise unable to play. The game feels like a boring grind without them. So I'm planning to take a break after I get my cryptlurker weapon this week (I only need to run E12n once for it, but I've been putting it off since it feels like a thing I have to do rather than one I want to do).

With friends the game is like a virtual place to gather and hang out.

These days, just posting blogs on The Lodestone, as I'm on hiatus from this game (I play Guild Wars 2 and Footsies now). But back when I did play it was definitely the gathering & crafting feature. No other game does gathering/crafting like this. I really love what they did with it. Otherwise, it's just an MMO that does things a little better than other MMOs I've played (Runescape, World of Warcraft, and Guild Wars 2). Definitely my go-to MMO right here.

Simple. No rage. An escape from life and the tedious nature of it. FF14 is not like a job (like other MMO's) and I can login and out without feeling like I am severely behind. Other MMO's this is just not an option.

Either way I agree, the lack of tense and angry players makes this game super magnetic to me.

Unless he really meant malice and not mallace.

the adventure and people I met throughout my many years here. its one the place I can get away from real life and just not have any worries for a brief moment.

Pure Mall Ace orrrrrrrr I was super drunk in 2009 when I tried to be edgy while drunk/high and spell PureMalice naming my BELF in WoW and the name just stuck and is never taken.......

It's an enjoyable RPG with a big dose of character customisation.

As an RPG, I like the story and characters, and I like how different threads of the narrative come together over time or explore different aspects of the world.

The world itself feels well thought out and enjoyable to explore. Having full-size zones and not just a miniaturised overworld map linking the towns and dungeons makes it feel like a place I know and navigate around.

Having a fully customisable "blank slate" protagonist is a bit of a novelty and a creative springboard - not that I ever get around to writing anything down and I don't RP, but having a few different characters (a traditional RPG party in concept) and thinking about how they would react to things, what each one exactly would be doing in a scene, which answers they would give.

Character designs look good and are fun to play around with - generally I'm not trying to create something specific but just trying different combinations until it looks good, then working out the character after that, so it doesn't feel too limited.

And of course, glamour. I haven't played many games at all that give you such fine control over your outfit, and certainly not in this volume of options. In most single-player games, at best you might get a few alternate all-in-one costumes and maybe your weapon visibly changes according to what you have equipped, but you don't just get to mix and match all the pieces like this.

I like punching gods in the face.

You just answered your own question for yourself. What you get out of ffxiv is the enjoyment of creating and playing a variety of characters and going through the story with them.

FFXIV has been a big help in keeping my spirits high while struggling to find a permanent job, being in a long distance relationship, and dealing with boredom born from having literally nothing to do other than take occasional walks because everything is permanently closed... The story is so, so good. I've recently concluded patch content of HW and I'm just filled with feelings. The game genuinely makes me so happy and the fact I can immerse myself in this story/world and forget about my daily problems is really cathartic. I just wished I had discovered the game earlier in 2020... XD

PS: The high level of customization and character design also makes it a nice tool of self-expression!

PPS: The game has also obliterated any will to develop other hobbies! XD

The thrill of combat from the battle system, the satisfaction I get from helping others complete duties, the lessons of not taking rewards for granted, and the first MMO to encourange me to take the initiative to socialize with others a bit to make the game more enjoyable. I am an introvert in real life, so FFXIV helps me cope with it a bit in ways that I can enjoy.

I'm not sure how to answer this. I feel like I like the game a bit less than I used to, but I enjoy the pve, and I feel like I won't have experienced all it has to offer to someone like me unless I play with more people, which is something I've been trying to do.
I don't care about house decorating, glamour, screenshot sharing, or minions. I just like there being pve content to clear with friends, stories to finish and grinding for gear/materials/gil.

The story, the characters, the music, Twintania's NN chat (though not so much that I would fall into depression after in-game graduation from novice status). I treat XIV pretty much like a single-player game as the typical MMO activies like daily grinds lose their "fun" aspect really quickly for me. For better or worse, by the time I re-sub (like the time between 5.2 to current patch), I've forgotten how to play and level jobs for trusts usually by MSQ roulette. Nobody with a sane mind would want me as a healer in a random leveling dungeon, especially in some of the post 50 ones XD.

Strangely enough. My daily dose of human interaction. I'm not super social irl, mostly because I get bored out of mind by face-to-face stuff if it's outside of work.

I have much more fun tackling content with people and talking loudly over Discord in comfortable clothing.
