Deep Dungeons, why the hassle?

I'm currently in the process of running PotD to get Heaven on High unlocked.

Is there any real reason why we need to have the Queue option locked behind an NPC in Quarrymill?

It's something of a hassle when you're doing things in other places. Ishgard, the Far East, etc. And you have to teleport to Quarrymill just to get into a queue, when it seems to be just absolutely unnecessary after you unlock it.

I'm no expert coder, but I think I have a pretty good idea of how it works. You talk to the NPC, it triggers the script to open the window for PotD, allowing you to select the options.

Wouldn't it be a huge QoL feature to add an option in the Duty list of the Main menu. So that once PotD is unlocked, you can go into the menu, go to Duty, scroll down to Deep Dungeons. Then select either PotD or HoH, assuming both are unlocked.

The menu item could easily launch the same script as the NPC in Quarrymill, or the one in the Ruby Sea.

If you select PotD, it calls up the same script that the NPC dialogue references, and the PotD window pops up.

You select to enter and get queued up, all while being located half a world away.

You could even place the NPCs that handle the Accursed Hoard into the Exit area of the dungeons. The one where you exit to the normal world, or you use the entry to go deeper/higher (assuming you have a fixed party).

That Bishop guy for PotD could be standing in this area, since I really doubt there is one of these for ever single 10 level group in the dungeon. It should only be a singular area.

Which means if the Bishop stood there, after you beat a 10th floor and use the exit in the boss room, you enter the new area, you talk to the bishop to see what is in your sacks of loot. Then you can exit out and go back to where you were previously. Just like you would a normal dungeon.

I can't see how this could be a bad idea. To be honest, it seems like with the deep dungeons being more accessible (ie, without needless travel), more people would queue for them and the queue times would be reduced.

It has to do with the points/ranking system associated with it. That's why it's not in duty finder.

Right, but I'm not suggesting it be added into the Duty Finder. When you go into the menu, you go to the Duty column, you could add an entry below Duty Finder, called Deep Dungeons.

I'm suggesting we get a menu option that functions exactly the same as that NPC in Quarrymill.

When you talk to him, all that happens is script is called to open up the PotD screen. To enter the dungeon, the save slots, etc.

A menu option would be no different than that NPC. It would run the same script, open the same window.

So it should function exactly the same. The only difference is that instead of being locked to a fixed NPC, you could access it anywhere.

Edit: To clear things up a bit, using the PotD as an example.

When you speak to Wood Wailer Expeditionary Captain, it instantly pops up a window. He doesn't have any dialogue at all.

The window has the commands to enter, reset progress, disband a fixed party, view scores, etc.

What I've been suggesting is the option to access this from your menu screen, without the necessity of an NPC.

Pressing Options (I'm on PS4), then hitting Right to go to the Duty tab.

You start on Journal, below that is Duty Finder, then Raid Finder, Trust, etc.

If you slip a new option beneath Duty Finder, or beneath Raid Finder, whichever, entitled Deep Dungeons. Clicking it could bring you to a window with the option of Palace of the Dead and Heaven on High.

You click Palace of the Dead and that window you get when speaking to the Expeditionary Captain pops up.

It should function exactly the same as he does. So there is no threat of losing scores or anything like that. Since the NPC's only purpose is to stand there and open that window, which the menu option would mirror exactly.

it's probably more cost effort than it's worth to change the system. probably why they program an npc as the gatekeeper for such things.

It shouldn't be, not really.

Since the NPC just opens a window. It's not like the NPC you talk to for the sacks, or the one beside it for gear.

Since the scripting is in place, largely it's just a matter of adding a menu item, have it call a choice thing, then point it to PotD or HoH's window script, that the NPC uses.

It could probably be accomplished in less than a day.

That's one reason I posted it here, on the off chance it might get implemented.

I wonder why access to this instanced content is locked behind an NPC, and if they couldn't change it.
It's fun for me to meet up with my FC at the base of Heaven on High before diving in, but for people that try and use the que to play with randos this would be a pretty appreciated QoL.

Right...because it's so hard to call the script that already exists for talking to the NPC.

It's not nearly as difficult as you might like to think.

At least you understand. It would be a huge QoL thing if you use matched party and have to sit and wait 2 hours for a queue.

It would be so much easier to access it via the menu, as opposed to teleporting to Quarrymill, or the Ruby Sea, just to queue up, then teleporting back to wherever else you were to go gathering, or to run quests in the MSQ while you waited.

Back to the topic at hand:
I always saw it as something that's in there so people are encouraged to go out into the world and not interact with a menu only.

People don't talk in this game, they use DF.

I'm fairly certain that's the reason you can't go into higher/deeper levels without a premade party. And Ocean Fishing as well as Eureka also make you go to an NPC which I like. At least that way you see people about. Otherwise these areas would be as empty as all housing districts.

Or it could be spaghetti coding. Haha

As I understand it, those levels are supposed to be much, much more of a challenge. And the matched party can currently give you 4 DPS, or a mix of DPS/Tank, etc.

If the difficulty is that much more, it would probably need a party like the DF sets up, with a Tank, Healer, and 2 DPS.

From what I saw, mostly it looks like people queued just stand around and wait. Or else they are off doing something while they wait for the queue to pop. Not much in the way of talking.

Considering most classes can solo the deep dungeon... if you've got 4 characters who know what they're doing then no comp should put you in hot water. Some comps will be easier than others, but all comps are viable.

Spaghetti coding cant be the reason.
Just remember how the entry to Coil worked back in ARR:
For the first coil we had to gather in wineport/eastern lanoscea.
Later for second coil it was northshroud and northern thanalan for Final coil.
But with heavensward they just put those into the DF.
