I am having the same problem. I've tried a few fixes I found online but haven't been able to get it working.
I also have been having this error.
I'm having the same error since yesterday.I tried a lot of ways to fix it but none worked.
I have the same issue since longer than 24h! I have tried nearly everything to fix it (apart from uninstalling the game) and nothing fixed it. I've followed a lot of guides and advices for this kind of issue but there is no hope to fix it.
So I imagine it's a problem on Square Enix's end rather than ours?
Please fix it before Christmas Holidays are over! :( This is the only time I (and other people) can play all day long! :P
I have deleted boot cfg, downloads, adjust boot cfg file as well, without successes. I have turned off all anti-viral protection without success. I also have only had this problem yesterday and today.

I had this same error after the 12/21 maint and ended up having to uninstall and reinstall the game after 3 hours of unsuccessful troubleshooting. Worked fine for about a week, now here I am again.
I really, really don't want to have to uninstall and reinstall every time the game updates.
I reinstalled and this worked, but I hope they find a workaround.

I had to reinstall the game and now I only get DirectX errors twice a day.
Progress! :)
My boyfriend had this issue two days ago. We looked online for a fix and found several that we could try, none of which worked. The only fix that worked was reinstalling the game. Today, both him and myself have the issue and are once again having to reinstall the game. This -cannot- be the way to deal with this issue, having to reinstall an MMO every time you launch it is frankly ridiculous. It's apparently an issue that's been around a while as well - when will it be resolved?
Made an account specifically to share the solution. On Windows at least, there is an .exe file that deals with DirectX that, for some reason, goes missing.
Program Files (x86) > SquareEnix, Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn > game
Filename: ffxiv_dx11.exe
If you're missing this, you'll have to re-download the file. This would be why a fresh install of the game corrects the problem.
As for why the file went missing in the first place, I'm still trying to figure that out. Your antivirus software might be at play.
Details are in this Reddit post, including a link to the exe file.

That sounds very logical, I've downloaded the file and will try restoring it if the error shows up again. Thanks so much for the solution, it puts my mind at ease to have a fix!
Had the same issue again this morning. I was unable to apply the fix stated above, when trying to add the downloaded file back to the correct folder, it gave me an error message saying I lacked permission to move files to that folder (strange as I am an admin on my computer. You were correct about the antivirus removing the file however, I use Avast and when I checked the virus chest I found the missing file and was able to restore it to the folder from there.
I have been having issues launching the game for a week or two at this point. I have uninstalled and re-installed the game a few times. I got it to work for a while using DirectX 9 but that is no longer working. Now it won't launch the game at all and says "Unable to complete version update."
When I use DirectX 11, it launches, but when I press start it says "A version update is required. Select OK and launch the game again. 1012"
Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.
We apologize for the delay in our response, please try the following troubleshooting steps:
- The game will use the Internet Explorer web browser to connect to the internet. Open Internet Explorer, then open the "Tools" setting, go to "Internet Options" and adjust the following settings:
- Under the "General" tab, please delete ALL browser history.
- Under the "Security" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or no higher than "Medium"
- Under the "Privacy" tab, click “Advanced” and select ‘Accept’ under both First Party and Third Party Cookies.
- Under the "Advanced" tab, please make sure that "Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid" is CHECKED.
- Make sure that all SSL and TLS (EXCEPT SSL 3.0) are CHECKED. [SSL 3.0 should be UNCHECKED]
- Hit "Apply" to save the settings, and then "OK, to close the Internet Options menu.
- Please RESTART your PC now. Once your PC has been restarted, Right-Click the FFXIV launcher icon once more and select "Run as Administrator"
-Make sure your fire wall or antivirus program is not interfering with the game
- Check to see if the following port ranges are opened on your router. You can contact your ISP and request they open them for you:
▼TCP
54992 through 54994,
55006 through 55007,
55021 through 55040
-Try disabling background applications and do a clean boot by opening the task manager and selecting the “Start up” tab. Disable everything and then restart the PC.

I can confirm that this solved it for me, at least for now. Thank you very much!
However, I chose to fix the problem within the quarantine of my Antivirus program, where the DX11 file was apparantly stored in the virus vault. Restoring it there and making an exception will probably keep it safe from happening again.
Hello everyone! Adding my voice to this. Apparently the suggested fixes don't work. Tomorrow I'll be reinstalling the game, but hope there will be a reliable solution asap.
Hi everyone. Made an account just to post that I have the same issues with this error code =(. I have also tried all the suggested fixes but so far I cannot play unless I uninstall and reinstall, which I did twice already. Hope I can find a proper fixture for this since I do not wanna reinstall everytime just to play.
TinyRawrs suggested fix worked for me! Found the .exe in the Avast Anti-Virus "Virus Chest." No clue how it got there in the first place but now it works. Thank you! I didn't even know virus chest existed in Avast lol. I am not sure where to direct or how to help others who are using different virus protection but what aSnowyEvening said was true for me - the exe file was deleted by my security.
This just started happening to me this morning. Checked and the ffxiv_dx11 file hasn't been deleted, so I'm trying uninstalling and reinstalling the client. Hopefully that works.
I've been frequently getting this error and it's extremely frustrating. No suggestions online work and I always have to uninstall and reinstall.
Haven't logged into the forums before but I also had the same issue - followed what the admin said on this post but nothing worked, then saw something about the direct x files - I changed it to DX 9 and it loaded up, I will be checking @aSnowyEvening post now and following the link to see if this can fix the issue.
Just a side note - a lot of people are saying they have Avast as there AV, I did until a few moments ago, so if you do just double check your quarantine area to see if the missing file has been added into there! :)
I am having that problem too, this is the 2nd time in two days that it has happened to me. Unfortunately the only way to fix it is to uninstall and then reinstall the game. As I am writing this I am waiting for the install to finish. I did research to see if there was another way to fix this problem. There are troubleshooting guides for this specific issue, don't bother none of that works. At least for me they didn't. I followed all the directions in those trouble shooting guides to a T and nothing. And reading the forums this actually is a common problem for alot of players. There is no rhyme or reason, not when the game works perfectly one day and then all of a sudden this error appears for some players not all. Just know nothing is wrong with your computer, nothing is wrong with your internet connections, just like nothing is wrong with mine. This is an ongoing issue from Square Enix, it's their problem that they need to fix and don't let the devs or tech support tell you different. TLDR: Uninstall then Re install.
Just had this happen again.
