Bard is my estimate.
Derplander started as an Archer in 1.0. I'd guess red mage myself.
I'm gonna guess Machinist on this one.
In order to answer the question of what, you'd first need to answer the question of where.
Ishgard for Dragoon, Ala Mhigo's got monks, Far East has samurai and Norvrandt doesn't have a signature class associated with it but, y'know, "Warrior of Darkness" is a perfect fit for Dark Knight. That being said, all of these classes have also been physical. I doubt he'd pick up spellcraft any time soon. He also has, as mentioned, Warrior and Bard already under the belt.
I've got no real idea where we're going, all I know is that when Garlemald hits he's definitely gonna gunbreak.
He's never been a caster before, and he's usually been a job not represented among the main Scions (sole exception being monk, but that spotlight was shared with samurai, and Lyse leaves the Scions at the end).
My guess is paladin. It kinda seems like the default job (watch the cutscenes at the end of Praetorium where we strike down Lahabrea with the blade of light; if you do it as any non-2.0 job, it defaults to a sword and shield), and given the hints that we're approaching the end of the Hydaelyn/Ascian plot, it seems like a nice bookend. Plus it would contrast with Shadowbringers' dark knight.
With the exception of Archer, they seem to always favor a physical, melee style job for him to fight up close. I would guess Paladin or Ninja or any new physical DPS, if they dare add another despite the need for healer. Machinist would be my other guess if they go for range. They also tend to go for jobs that the other scions don’t use and since Thancred is no longer a Rogue, Ninja is up for grabs and no Paladin or Machinist in the scions either. Magical jobs seems like they feel don’t suit him for some reason. I guess it’s not dramatic enough since they seem to want him to always fight up close in the cinematics.
He's a melee fighter, so no ranged classes or healers.
He will either go back to being a warrior, his most iconic job, or he will become a paladin.
Rdm because can really verflare it up in a trailer harder with other casters if they want to keep spell casting as a thing if not any caster has flare to do good in a trailer so any job is viable
Blue Mage. He's gonna self destruct.
NPC, we are going to finally meet him in game. And he's going to sell overpriced glamour.
My guess a mage. If he’s a healer, either Scholar or a new one. Considering the new angle shown in the latest patch is how we’ve discovered a method to heal tempering, (and tonberry sickness!) having derplander focus on being a combat medic seems reasonable.
Conversely, Summoner, for much the same reason of the focus being on tempering.
Either Red Mage or Gunbreaker. Or a new job.
I don't think they really want to delve into casters overall, except Red Mage (because of it's melee part). Healers even less.
This might sound cynical but it seems every job Derplander Touches turns to crap. MNK in SB, DRK in SHB, idk if this was the case for DRG back in the day.
Theirs NIN, and derplander seems to dislike magic jobs as he’s never seen with any RDM, SMN, BLM Ranged aswell MCH and BRD. ARC yes but no BRD
I like this take. Similar to my own thoughts in the matter.
Alphinaud and Alisae seem to be almost hinted at changing Jobs. The achievement for this last patch wasn’t “Futures Rewriten”, but rather “Pen and Sword.” As they seem to admire things about each other, what if they kinda invert their jobs- Alphinaud a Blue Mage, and Alisae a Summoner?
I expect it'll be Paladin, simply because it's an iconic WoL style that as of yet hasn't been a poster job.
But I'd like to throw in Machinist and Red Mage for contenders too.
It's never been a DoM job. Ever.
It won't be dancer.
But it should be dancer.
Fisher, obviously.
Paladin.
The 5.4 antagonist's monster name gives it away. It'll also be part of the theming with our return to being a Warrior of Light now that we're back on the Source, as well as tying into the aspect of our, "Sun God" heritage.
I would imagine some sort of melee class since you can't really have cool sword fights as a healer or caster. However, Red Mage is a possibility because they have melee stuff and they can make that look cool. That being said, Paladin seems logical. I know we have Ninja still, but we don't know the theme of the next expansion, and Ninja has an eastern theme. Paladin is pretty universal, so it would be the safe bet.
Well we haven't seen him on Gunbreaker yet...
Blue Mage!!
I hope for summoner just because that would make for some pretty amazing cinematics summoning bahamut, phoenix or another big summon if we are going to get one in 6.0. But I am not holding my breath. Machinist seems the most likely out of the current jobs.
Dancer.
Right after he fantasias to Miqo'te.
I feel it really boils down to 2 things: where are we going (so it will fit the theme) and what SE thinks will excite/increase sales.
I think we are probably going to Sharlayan with what hints I can gather, and/or parts of Garlemald.
So it makes sense to be a mage job like Rdm, Sch or Smn, but I wouldn’t rule out whatever “new” job is introduced either.
As much as I personally like mages though, I think the traditional rpg-main-hero look would be a more popular,.but then again who knows!
Food for thought with some spoilers for 5.4
So towers are going up that are related to Lunar Eidolons and Tempering, aka magic brainwashing. We're looking to get Estinien into the fold, but he could be out anywhere. They've referenced FFIV with Lunar Bahamut, which is the reason the Scions want Estinien. If they're going to heavily reference FFIV with the Lunar Eidolons, or in FFXIV's case, Lunar Primals, it'd make sense for them to reference FFIV's main protagonist, Cecil Harvey, a PLD. Where does Estinien factor in? Well, it's fairly likely that he will get Tempered by one of the towers, causing a MSQ fight with him, yet again, echoing Kain from FFIV.
I wouldn't say that Garlean expansion = Gunbreaker poster job, because these two don't have any close connection. Garleans use far greater gunblades than the player is able to use.
And I wouldn't bet on MCH. Poster job is supposed to encourage new people to play the game, and a Gunner that can't even shoot bullets, but only release heat blasts while doing backflips will work like anti-advertising.
It is quite a difficult question to answer. Shadowbringers highly subverted our expectations on anything. My guess on Scholar kind of rests on the fact that all of the Scions in the party are intellectuals who have written an academic thesis. The Main Character (Derplander if you will) is still something of a bumpkin in comparison. Sharlayan is the perfect place for him to commit to more serious study. And with the cure to tempering being distributed (wow a vaccine...), as well as being active on the Bozjan front (Field tactician vibes). As much bitching as we have done over Healers, the direction of Scholar makes a lot of sense to me.
There is also the factor of Lunar Bahamut and likely other primals coming back to a plague us as their dark versions.
I should say that should my guess of Scholar be derplander’s new job, in theory he will also have leveled Summoner.
It could be Island out lands in this expansion, Such as Thavnair, or the land of the Whalaquee. It’s hard to say- but those are my rather scattered thoughts on the matter.
Assuming 6.0 is the expansion where we actually take the fight to Garlemald, I'd say there's good odds on it being Paladin actually. It's pretty much the perfect contrast. Garlemald is the evil, technological, attacking expansionist empire, founded by a cult trying to revive an evil borderline demonic god, and predominantly colored with Black and Red. The Paladin is the exact opposite, it's magical instead of technological, it's a defender instead of an aggressor, it's spells and actions are all holy/light aligned instead of dark aligned, and its primary color scheme is Silver, White and Blue.
Plus you get the combination of the Warrior of Darkness retaking the mantle of Warrior of Light by switching from the job that wields darkness to the one that wields holy light and you get a reference to Final Fantasy IV's Cecil.
I think Machinist or Bard. But if we finally get Derplander into a magic class then... Summoner or Red Mage.
