This is a version update, ie Patch 3.3.x to Patch 3.4 and they happen every 3-4 months and yes they usually last the whole day. Day long maintenance is usually only for version updates, expansions or hardware upgrades, so they don't happen that frequently. Most maintenance lasts only a few hours.

Yeah, the notice for 5.4 is slightly off. The maintenance notice says it's from Dec. 7, 2020 6:00 p.m. to Dec. 8, 2020 2:00 a.m. (PST) but in reality, the servers were down by 2 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2020 PST. Most likely, they'll last for 24 hours.

Its down for 24hours partly cause of the patch, but the main reason is infrastructure maint.

So usually you will not be able to play on the day before a major patch, usually Monday for the .x patches though the exact time and day will vary depending on your time zone.
Sometimes this interferes with completing limited time or seasonal
events, so be forewarned!
Note you can usually download the version update before server maintenance actually ends.
